MP will serve on a panel at AWP, Chicago, Illinois, February 11-14, 2009, "The Fourth Wall: The Academy in the Community." Other panel members are Cynthia Hogue, Alberto Ríos, Sheila Britton, and Sean Nevin.

In January, 2009, MP will return to Calcutta, India, to work with Kalam:Margins Write.

Conjunctions magazine, "The Death Issue"MP has two pieces forthcoming in print publications: the story "Pelagia: Holy Fool," in the journal IMAGE, Art, Faith, Mystery (December 2008) and the essay "A Solemn Pleasure" in Conjunctions, "The Death Issue," guest-edited by David Shields (Fall 2008).

In November, 2008, MP will travel as an invited writer and observer to Ecuador with a medical mission team from Women For World Health.

MP has been selected to speak on "Children Writing from the Margins" at the Writing and Wellness Connections Conference, October 10-11, 2008 at Mercer University, Atlanta, Georgia.

Elected a Hawthornden Fellow, MP spent a month's residency at Hawthornden Castle, Midlothian, Scotland, from May 21-June 20, 2008. Past fellows have included Zadie Smith, Ian Rankin, Helen Simpson, Maud Casey, Allison Hedge Coke, and Janet McAdams.
