MP's story “Swimming with Vivaldi” will be published in Platte Valley Review, University of Nebraska, Allison Hedge-Coke, editor, fall 2009.
MP's story "Pelagia: Holy Fool," was published in the journal IMAGE: Art, Faith, Mystery (Spring 2009). An interview with her was also published in March by IMAGE's online companion.
MP was keynote speaker at the Sounds of Spring, International Dinner and Silent Auction, to benefit Tempe Montessori School, hosted by TEMPO (Tempe Parents’ Montessori Organization), at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Tempe, AZ on April 18, 2009 from 5-9 p.m.
MP was keynote speaker at the Cochise Community Creative Writing Celebration, Sierra Vista, Arizona, March 27-28, 2009. An article about the event appeared in the March 28, 2009 edition of The Sierra Vista (AZ) Herald.
In January, 2009, MP returned to India, where she worked with organizations serving at-risk populations: Kalam:Margins Write and Seagull Arts in Calcutta, and with Roma Debabrata's anti-trafficking agency, STOP, in New Delhi. From there she traveled to Afghanistan, where she interviewed Air Force women pilots and members of Provincial Reconstruction Teams about their experiences there. Stay tuned for updates.
In November, 2008, MP traveled as an invited writer and observer to Ecuador with a medical mission team from Women For World Health. Arizona State University news published an interview with MP about her experiences.
MP served on a panel at AWP, Chicago, Illinois, February 11-14, 2009, "The Fourth Wall: The Academy in the Community." Other panel members are Cynthia Hogue, Alberto Ríos, Sheila Britton, and Sean Nevin.
MP'sessay "A Solemn Pleasure" appeared in Conjunctions, "The Death Issue," guest-edited by David Shields (Fall 2008).
Elected a Hawthornden Fellow, MP spent a month's residency at Hawthornden Castle, Midlothian, Scotland, from May 21-June 20, 2008. Past fellows have included Zadie Smith, Ian Rankin, Helen Simpson, Maud Casey, Allison Hedge Coke, and Janet McAdams.
