uclParticipant Stipend and Housing

The stipend for the Seminar is $3900, the standard amount provided by the NEH for five-week seminars. To simplify check cashing and currency exchange, the full stipend (minus UCL housing costs; see below) will be paid in advance. The $3900 will help defray the costs of participating: airfare to London; accommodations at University College London (UCL); and all other personal expenses, including the books assigned for the course, meals, and other incidentals. We will cover the local transportation and admissions fees for our three field trips, as well as the train fare to Bath (our field trip for the first week). London is, however, one of the most expensive cities in the world, and it is very likely that you will need to supplement your stipend with other funds to meet your full costs during the Seminar.

Because housing in London, especially in the summer, is very scarce and expensive, we have arranged group accommodation in a student residence hall at University College London. John Dodgson House (24-36 Bidborough Street) is within easy walking distance of the Wellcome Library, the British Library, and King's Cross and St. Pancras stations. Opened in 1997, this residence hall comprises 157 single en suite rooms (i.e., with personal bathrooms), with kitchens located on each floor and shared between 5-10 people. All rooms have computer data points (internet available at a fee). UCL provides bed linen and a bath towel, and services the rooms weekly. We have arranged for a group rate of £44.50/night from Sunday, June 24 to Saturday, July 28 (arrival date might be moved up to Saturday, June 23). Meals are not included in this fee. If you choose to take advantage of this housing option, the costs for your room will be deducted up front from your stipend payment. The cost for accommodations for the full five weeks is £1547, or approximately $2400 at current exchange rates.
