Literature and Book-Finder Sites
Are you an avid reader? Do you often have difficulty locating
copies of the books you seek? Then you might be interested in some
of the following internet sites. The internet is a paradise for
booklovers because used and/or out-of-print books can be located
through some of these sites if you are willing to be patient. Many
of them will allow you to construct a "wish list" of books that you
want to find, and will notify you as copies become available. Of
course, you will be competing with other book collectors who have
filed their own lists, and you may find that the book has already
been purchased by the time that you receive your notice. On the other
hand, your chances of locating that obscure out-of-print book on
eigenvalue decompositions are close to nil otherwise, unless you
live in a major urban center with many used bookstores. I have
been successful in finding out-of-print books through these sites that
I would never have found otherwise. So take heart, and enjoy
your search.
Book Search Sites
- AddAll Used and Out-of-Print Search Site
This one is easy to use and provides quite a bit of information on the book.
- BookFinder.com
A great one, and one of the older sites around.
- Alibris. This one offers more than
just a search site. You can file a wish list here. The prices seem to be a little
higher here though.
- Powell's in Portland. Not a search
site, but rather a bookstore with a huge inventory of used books, even technical books.
If you are not in the Portland Oregon area, you can still shop at Powell's through
their site.
- Abebooks.com, a great search site
with wish-list potential. I've found many books here.
- Half.com, part of ebay. This
one is a little harder to use, but you get good prices.
- ecampus.com, nice for used textbooks
or technical books that wouldn't appear in standard bookstores. There are plenty of
these types of sites on the web. Here's a tip if you are looking for a used copy of a
textbook: visit the college or university website at the author's college or
university, and check the campus bookstore for used copies. It works.
- The Strand, not only a search
site, but a bookstore in the heart of Manhattan. I spent many hours there when I lived
in New York.
Other Book Sites
Some Interesting Literature Sites
- John Fowles, a site devoted to
the work of this author, who wrote The Magus and other great fiction.
- The
Garden of Forking Paths, a site devoted
to the work of Jorge Luis Borges, the great Argentine essayist and short story writer.
