eXceed and Aspen

Running eXceed from a PC in the SCS Computing Sites
After you have logged into the PC, and the printer has been connected:
Start refers to the Start button on a Windows '95 PC, which typically appears in the lower left corner of the display.
The symbol - in these instructions indicates that you should follow that path on the Start menu.
- Start - Programs - XWindow - eXceed RUN ME FIRST
- Start - Programs - XWindow - Exceed
- Start - Programs - XWindow - Telnet
- In the Connect window, either choose a Unix server from the pull-down menu (click the arrow pointing down) or type the name of your desired Unix server in the Host box. (e.g. stats.asu.edu) Then click OK.
- Login to the Unix server you have chosen when the login prompt appears in the Telnet window.
- Start - Run - Winipcfg
- Note your IP address in the IP Configuration window shown by Winipcfg. This appears on the third line of information.
- In the Telnet window, type the following command (Remember that Unix is sensitive to the case of letters and spacing.)
 | export DISPLAY=129.219.71.72:0
 | Replace 129.219.71.72 with your current IP address as shown by Winipcfg.
 | The IP address is followed immediately by a colon and the number zero. | | |
- In the Telnet window, run your desired Unix application (e.g. Type runaspen to start the Aspen program.) The program will launch in the eXceed window.

Running Aspen from a PC in the SCS Computing Sites
After you have logged into the Xterm
- Open a Terminal window.
- Telnet to the Unix server of your choice. (e.g. stats.asu.edu) by typing:
 | telnet stats.asu.edu
 | replace stats.asu.edu with the name of the Unix server you wish to use. | |
- At the stats prompt, type the following command (Remember that Unix is sensitive to the case of letters and spacing.)
 | export DISPLAY=129.219.71.72:0
 | Replace 129.219.71.72 with the IP address shown on the label attached to the monitor of each XTerm.
 | The IP address is followed immediately by a colon and the number zero. | | |
- At the stats prompt, run your desired Unix application (e.g. Type runaspen to start the Aspen program.)

Common problems with users attempting to use eXceed and/or Aspen
 | On the PC, failure to run the eXceed RUN ME FIRST before attempting to launch the eXceed application will yield the error: "The file or folder 'exceed.exe' that this shortcut refers to cannot be found."
 | Choosing the wrong Unix server. Many users of these programs need to access the stats server rather than general.
 | Mistyping the export DISPLAY command, either because their instructions are incorrect or because they are not aware of the fact that Unix is sensitive to both the case and spacing of the commands.
 | Typing the IP address of examples rather than the IP address of their workstation.
 | Typing the letter O instead of the number 0 at the end of the export DISPLAY command.
