========================================================================== Black - Bayless In this file are 3 printouts from my database that are somewhat connected. 1. The first is some descendants of Jeremiah Black. I don't know where to find a comprehensive study of early Black lines in the area. In 1798 a John Black had a grant of land between Meshack and Little Meshack Creek a couple of miles upstream from the Meshack Community. A Joseph Black had (in 1798) a grant on the Cumberland River near Black's Ferry. The information on Jeremiah Black comes from some material that Eva Coe Peden had amongst some McMillin and Bedford data. It is not documented. Two of his daughters married McMillins and one married Gov Preston Leslie. The basic data (identification of children) comes from the Peden material, and I have fleshed it out somewhat. One uncertainty is with Jeremiah Black's wife. One Peden document says it is Martha Halsell (I know her parents and siblings) and another says it is Martha Bedford. It could be either as far as I know. I would think that it is highly probable that Jeremiah Black is the son of one of the above mentioned land grantees. 2. An article in the Overton Family History book is part of the source for the material in the second chart on Thomas Black. The article says Thomas Black's parents were Joseph and Jemima Black of Green Co and later (when it was formed from Green) Cumberland Co. I would think that this Joseph is probably the one with the 1798 Balck's Ferry area grant. I am comfortable with order and dates of birth of Thomas Black's children, although I have not been able to verify everything. In particular I am not quite sure where to place the son Jeremiah, but where I have him is probably right. (I think the only other possibility would be to have him as the first child.) I have included what I know about the daughter Catherine Black (other people know this stuff). I can give some family data for Thomas Black's children Martha H Black and John H Black, but first I need to fill in some gaps with some more census research (mainly 1860 and 1870 Overton Co). 3. John Mulkey's sister, Sarah, married Joseph Bayless in Washington Co, TN, around 1797-1799, and probably in 1801 came to Monroe(Barren) county (certainly no later than 1801, possibly earlier). Joseph Bayless died around 1813 and Sarah married Samuel Marrs in 1815. I have never seen any family history work on Joseph Bayless so I have worked up something, which is in the third chart. I found items in the Barren Co order books from which I could infer the death date and names of children. Also there is a land record showing a claim for land on Mill Creek in 1801. I found odds and ends in later census records (and other stats) that have permitted me to give the material in the third chart. I am pretty confident on the order of the children and believe that I am accurate to within a year or two on birth dates. The only uncertainty in my mind is whether the oldest child Nancy was born in Washington Co or after the move to Kentucky. My best guess is Washington Co. The connection to the Black family is a little indirect.
