[105] According to his grandnephew, Nathaniel L. Rodgers, William
attended Lincoln University in 1884. After marrying in 1886, he
returned in 1887 for two more years of instruction. He taught there in
the year 1889. He studied law at Cumberland University. He moved to
Phillipsburg, Montana the year after Montana was admitted as a state
and became the County Attorney for Deer Park. In 1896 William was
elected for one term to the state legislature. He then beacame the
U.S. Attorney for the District of Montana. He joined the legal
department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company at Butte, Montana in
1902. He served as a vice-president of the American Bar Association.
