On September 4, 1882, Sarah Ellen's two half-aunts, Ellen and
Mary C. (Sarah) disclaimed any and all interest in the remaining
acreage of the Hickory Cove farm land that they had inherited from
their father. The following conveyance is filed in Hawkins County Deed
Book #33, page 14. .
Ellen and Sarah Gillenwaters to Sarah E. M. Courtney.

Know all men by these presents that we, Mary and Ellen
Gillenwaters,
citizens of the County of Hawkins & State of Tennessee, for and
in
consideration of the love and affection we have for our niece,
Sarah
Ellen Minerva Courtney, wife of D.J. Courtney, also of the said
County &
State, have this day bargained and sold and do by these presents
give,
grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the said Sarah Ellen Minerva
Courtney
all the right, title, claim and interest we have in and to a
certain lot
or parcel of land situated in the State of Tennessee, County of
Hawkins &
District #10, adjoining the lands of Asbury Gillenwaters, Samuel
Molsbee,
Ned Bray, and C. M. Harlan, bounded as follows: Beginning at a
Beech in the
Creek below the mouth of the Nose branch, and running down the
meanderings
of the creek to Asberry Gillenwater's line , and then with said
line to the
top of the knob to Polly's and Sarah's line, and then northwest
with their
line to the Beginning it being the tract of land given to us by
our father,
Thomas Gillenwters by his last Will dated November 11th, 1864. To
have and
to hold unto her the said Sarah Ellen Minerva Courtney and her
heirs and
assigns forever in fee simple and we do hereby covenant with the
said Sarah
Ellen Minerva Courtney that we are lawfully seized and possessed
of the
before described tract of land that is unencumbered, that we have
a right to
convey it, and that we will present and future defend the title
thereto
against the lawful claims of all persons whatsoever. There is
excepted out
of this conveyance a tract containing about 12 acres heretofore
sold and
conveyed by us to George Gillenwaters. Given under our hands on
this the
4th day of September 1882. her

Thomas Gillenwaters was Sarah Ellen's grandfather while Polly was
her step-grandmother. Sarah's grandmother died around 1832. Her
grandfather had been dead for 17 years when this conveyabce was made.
George and Asberry Gillenwaters, sons of William, were first
cousins of Mary and Ellen.
Mary and Ellen's brothers John, Jim, Wesley, and Isaac Shelby
were all dead by 1882. Their brother Joel C. was 66 and living in
Carter Valley. Sister, Zora, (Missouri G.) had migrated to the state
of Missouri in the late forties or early fifties. Their half-sister
Martha is thought to have died at a young age like their half-brother
Thomas B.L. Their half-sister Sarah was married to Samuel Molsbee and
, according to the conveyance, living down the road a piece.
