[122] Capt. McKenna's obituary is on record on page 382, Book 26, of
the [UL: Suzie Baker Fountain Papers [UL: , in the Humboldt County
Library, Eureka, CA. The obituary reads:
Capt. James McKenna, one of the best known pilots on Humboldt
Bay, who was stricken with apoplexy sometime Tuesday and was shortly
afterwards removed to Union Labor Hospital for treatment, passed away
there Wednesday evening at 9:00 without regaining consciousness.
Capt. McKenna was probably one of the best known men about Humboldt
Bay, having been connected with its water traffic ever since his
boyhood days; as a raftsman, steamboat master and lately, for the past
fifteen years or more, in the boat hiring and launch business at the
foot of H Street and at intervals master of the bay steamer Antelope.
He was a native of the State, having been born at Benica and came here
with his parents in his infancy, since which time Eureka has been his
home. He was 59 years old.
He leaves to mourn 3 brothers William, Thomas, a donkey engineer
at Scotia, Alexander, 2 sisters Mrs. Van Sant of Eureka and Mrs. Sarah
Moss a half-sister. Two of these Thomas and Eliza are the oly near
relatives in this county. The funeral was held yesterday from Odd
Fellows Hall (He belonged 40 years).
