According to William Luther Brown, Elijah and his brother Thomas
located at Thompkinsville, Monroe, KY. They are believed to have
established a college at Bowling Green, KY.
My source for most of the data on this family line is Mary D.
Gillenwaters Stevens. Mary and her husband retired to Florida in 1990
forsaking their Illinois homeland. Her address in the summer of 1991
was 2023 St. Lucie Blvd. #26, Fort Pierce, Florida 34946.
Barbara Brown lists four children for Elijah and Margaret: May,
Malinda, Burr, and William Thomas. Mary Stevens also lists four
children: William Thomas, McLissie, Lensy Burl (Burr), and James M.
(Jim).
An anamoly is presented by the 1870 Monroe County, Kentucky,
census. In the 6th precinct, page 207, is listed the following
household, number 445: Maggie A. Gillenwaters, 29 years old, white
female, born in Kentucky, a farmeress. Living with her are three
children: Mary K. - 9, William T. - 6, and Matilda E. - 4. Elijah
A. is not listed in the household nor is Malissa or James M. Living
nearby is George C. Moore with his wife, Eliza C., their two young
children, and 64 years old Mary.
It seems strange that Margaret would not have her one year old
infant with her. Was Maggie ill and in a weakened condition after
infant James birth? Was the Mary living next door to her mother?
