[43] .
In HISTORICAL SKETCHES OF HAWKINS COUNTY James Woods Rogan, in
discussing the history of the Methodist Church in Hawkins County,
wrote "Among the more prominent of the local ministers were Revs.
George White, James White Crawford, O. C. Miller, and E. E.
Gillenwaters.
About the year 1857 or 1858, through the efforts principally of
Rev. E. E. Gillenwaters, the congregation erected quite an imposing
brick church, near where the present church stands. It was not
completed before the end of the war, and the bricks not being
thoroughly burned, the wall, in a few years, gave way and fell to the
ground." .
In Barbara Brown's book is contained a notice published in the
Herald Tribune of Jonesboro, TN on 30 March 1876. To wit: .
Died - The Hon. Edward E. Gillenwaters, on Monday. He was born
in 1826 in Hawkins County, Tennessee and died Monday the 27th
of March 1876. The Judge professed religion at Bunker Hill Camp
Ground, Hawkins County, he joined the M.E. Church and became a
Minister at age 20 years. He was married in 1854 to Mrs. Sarah
W. Brice, a daughter of Elijah C. Gillenwaters, she survises him.
