[23] There is a family group sheet in the Tompkinsville KY county
library listing Thomas year of birth as 1928 - seven years prior to
any other reported date of birth. His tombstone engraving and war
records list 1835. Since he first married around 1860, a birthdate of
1828 is highly improbable.
This Thomas is my grandfather whom I never met nor heard much
about over the years. He died when my mother was just short of her
eighth birthday. Thomas married three times and had a total of 18
children. My mother never met any of the children from the first
marriage and new nothing about them. She had heard that her
half-brother John (s/o Susan), went to Houston, Texas. Another
half-brother, James, kept in touch and regularly visited the children
of the third marriage until his death.
Thomas was a virile man - he was approaching his 72nd birthday
when his last son was born. Although he worked at whatever job he
could find at the time, his main profession was teaching. When he
left Hart County near the turn of the century, he was in his 70's.
OBITUARY: Reprinted in the Evening News, Jeffersonville, IN in March
1960.
________________________THOMAS GILLENWATER DEAD
Thomas Gillenwater, also an old soldier, died at 6 oclock this
evening at his home at Cementville. He would have been 77 had he
lived until next March 11. His birthplace was in Tennessee and he is
survived by his wife, who was Miss Lula Ward before their marriage,
and by a number of children. The family moved to Cementville about a
year ago from Kentucky and it is understood that his sevice during the
Civil War was in a Kentucky regiment. Mr. Gillenwater had been sick
for some time but had not had a physician lately, on which account the
coroner was notified and Deputy Coroner Glover L. Coots went out to
Cementville to view the remains. Death was due to a complication of
diseases. The Funeral will be held Sunday and interment will be in
the National Cemetery at New Albany.
