Most of David's family left Hawkins County between the mid 1830's
and mid 1850's. His eldest son, Pleasant, moved into Schuyler
County, Illinois around 1835. William migrated to Washington County,
Arkansas in the early 1840's. Samuel followed Pleasant into Illinois
settling in Effingham County around 1840. It is possible that he may
have removed to Dallas County, Missouri around 1870. Samuel's wife and
his son Thomas died there. Joseph also moved up to Schuyler County,
Illinois, for he married there in 1849 and then migrated to Oregon
where he established the first Gillenwater family in the northwest.
David accompanied his youngest four children Elizabeth, Sarah,
and twin sons Thomas C. and Elijah A. to Monroe County, Kentucky
around 1852. He did fairly well in the rich farmlands there and
engaged in several land aquisitions. In KENTUCKY LAND GRANTS 1782-1924
are the following items: Land grant of 5 acres along Mill Creek in
BARREN KY on 10 Nov 1852. Book 47 page 87. Land grant of 2 acres
along Mill Creek in BARREN KY on 10 Nov 185(7?). Book 47 page 90.
Because of the burning of Monroe county courthouse in 1862, there are
no records of David's land purchases when he first moved into Monroe.
His last will and testament, if he wrote one, has not been found.
In the 1830 CENSUS, VOL I, East Tennessee, David had 5 boys
under the age of 20 and 4 girls under the age of 10 living with him at
that time, a total of nine children. Evidently one son and one
daughter did not survive. In a letter from Moena Saddler, she states
that Prentice Price listed a son Jack and a daughter Henrietta who are
not currently listed as part of the family.
The 1840 census for the Eastern District of Hawkins County lists
David, his wife, and twelve dependants. Pleasant married in 1839.
Mary is thought to have married in 1840 and probably was not included
as a dependent. If so, the twelth dependant could have been
Pleasant's wife.
In the 1850 CENSUS - TENNESSEE VOL 3, David is listed with his
wife, Keziah age 55, Elizabeth age 18, Sarah age 15, Thomas age 12,
and Elijah age 12.
David's four oldest boys are listed by William Luther Brown in
his book [UL: My Ancestors and Their Descendants. :UL] but none of the
girls are mentioned.
