!UPDATE: 12 Jun 1993
Clarence and Elizabeth met at Emporia State Teacher's College,
Emporia, KS. Clarence stumbled into class late one day, and that's
when she noticed him. Soon afterward, Clarence hitch-hiked to Seattle,
WA to find work. He was working at miscellaneous construction jobs,
building the Boeing plant there. He had been there for about eight
months when he and Betty decided to get married. They were suppossed
to have been married on the 19th of April. Clarence sent her a letter
with $60 to pay off her bills and pay for her trip out to Seattle. He
sent it registered mail, but it was late in arriving. Betty was mad
that it had taken so long, and the wedding had to be delayed a week.
When they finally were married, the only friends there were two Irish
girls that lived in Clarence's building and two friends of his from
work.
They moved from Clarence's upstairs flat on the third floor (the
bathroom was on the second floor) to a first floor apartment. At
least the bathroom was then on the same floor. They saved every penny
they made and in six months, saved $500. They used that to buy a
house in Seattle. Clarence said that the front yard dropped off down
a hill and that it was next to impossible to mow.
Clarence volunteered for the Air Force in 1944. He was training
to be a pilot. He got through the first stage of training in
Washington D.C., but the war was coming to a close before he finished,
and so he was mustered out. Betty was staying with her sisters in
Kansas City during this time.
After the war, they settled in Hoisington, KS, near Clarence's
brothers.

Quoting from the Walter L. Brown, "Merchant at Bean's Station,
Alum Well (sic) and Blevins, Tennessee. Hauled merchandise from
Baltimore, Md. in wagons. From death record: 'Lived a moral, religious
life. Very notable and well respected, the opinion of all who knew
him. He is resting with the Angels of Heaven.' :BO]
Alum Well(s) is in Hawkins County, TN. Blevins is in Carter
County, TN. His eldest son's middle name probably came from the Rice
family who operated a grist mill in Hawkins County for many years. I
know of no marriages of Gillenwaters or Brooks with the Rice family.
