[8] The Carroll papers state that Thomas married a second time to a
Polly Kyle of nearby War Gap, Hawkins, Tennessee. Vera Boyatt also
supports this contention.
The wills of Polly's parents, Thomas Gillenwaters and Mary
Wilkins definitely imply that Thomas (son of Joel) married his cousin
Polly Gillenwaters. In Thomas' will the context suggests that all his
daughters are married in 1841. His daughter Polly is named as `Polly
Gillenwaters'. In Mary's will of 1855 she speaks of her daughter
Polly who intermarried with Thomas Gillenwaters, "her beloved
son-in-law". It is possible that Polly married first a Kyle (her
sister Rachel had married Robert Kyle). There is no evidence that a
Polly Gillenwaters Kyle ever had children; hence it is possible that
Polly was widowed, divorced, or abandoned shortly after her marriage.
When Ellen Carmack Gillenwaters died around 1831 (possibly during
childbirth of Minerva), Thomas now around 40 years old was left with
eight children, three of whom were still infants. His first cousin
Polly was 24 years old. If she were a widow or divorcee, a natural
course of action would then be her marriage of a widow or divorcee, a
natural course of action would then be her marriage to Mary's favorite
nephew. The exact years of Ellen's death and Polly's subsequent
marriage to Thomas are unknown. Ellen could have died as early as
1830 or as late as 1834.
