[89] The following obituary copied in Barbara Brown's book is thought
to have ben originally published in the Wichita newspaper.
___DEATH OF AN OLD SCHUYLERITE
___Lydia Ruth Hiller was born in the State of Indiana, May 23,
1835;
died May 25, 1919, aged 84 years and two days.
___She was married in to Thomas F. Gillenwater in Schuyler
County, Ill.,
Dec. 7, 1853, where they lived until 1883, when they moved to
Butler
County, Kan., where they resided on a farm until his death, when
she
moved to 470 Ida Ave., Wichita, Kans., where she lived until her
death.
___To this union nine children were born, six girls and three
boys.
Two of the girls died in youth; these with the oldest son, John
W.
Gillenwaters, who died in February, 1918, and the husband, who
died
July 16, 1909, having proceeded her to the Glory Land.
___The other six. two sons, Oscar L. of Wichita and Warren F.
Gillenwaters
of Andover; four daughters, Mrs. Anna Tyree of Huntsville, Ill.;
Mrs.
Nettie Horsman, Mrs. Dillie Alexander and Mrs. Mattie GIlmore of
Wichita
remain to cherish and keep sacred the blessed memory of a loving
and
devoted mother.
___She leaves seventeen living granchildren, of whom six
grandsons will
today, with loving hands, bear the body to its last resting
place. Also
twelve great-grandchildren; one brother, James Hillis of Rose
Hill, Kan.,
srvives her.
___She became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church when a
small
girl and for three score years and ten remained a faithful member
of the
same, dying as she had lived, trusting in the saving power of a
living
Christ.
