David's adult life appears to have been rather disruptive. After
fathering three children between 1841 and 1846, David is found in the
1850 census working in Abingdon, VA as a store manager while his wife,
Rebecca is living at the home of her parents in Scott County.

In 1854, reconciled with Rebecca, he moved east into Smyth County
where his second son was born. Two years later at the age of 37 he
moved 100 miles west into Breathitt County, Kentucky. There two more
sons were born in 1856 and 1860. At the age of 42, David enlisted in
January of 1862 for Confederate service in Company I of the 5th
Kentucky Mounted Infantry for one year. After being discharged he
fathered his and Rebecca's last child, Martha Ellen, who was probably
born in Breathitt County, although this is not known. Rebecca must
have had difficulty with another labor, gotten sick, and returned to
her parents in Scott County , VA, where she died 23 days before her
youngest daughter's first birthday. David, in the meantime, was back
in Abingdon in Washngtin County. Left with six children between 19
and two years of age, David remarried within five months to Sallie
Henderson. .
We don't know what happened to Sallie, but early in 1970 he
married for a third time, this time to Susan Duncan. Susan found a
ready family of three teen age boys.
