I hope that this discussion clarifies some confusion about several
different Fendal Hagans in 19th century Monroe Co. I start with
census records from 1850 for two different families(see below). The
first is the family of Fendal Reuben Hagan (b c1822) who married
Sarah Ann Strode. I will refer to him simply as old Fendal. You
will note that old Fendal's son, Fendal Palmore Hagan is shown as
a 3 year old in this census record. I will call him FP .

The second family is that of Francis Hagan. I am not sure who his
father was. Arthur Hagan, Jr, is said to have had a son Frank, so this
Francis may be Frank. At any rate Francis first shows up in the 1840
Monroe Co census with 2 daughters under 5 (these would be Elizabeth and
Nancy). His wife Anna shown below is Anna Crews and is Francis' second
wife. I don't know the name of the first wife, who died shortly after 1840.
Notice that Francis has a son Fendal (age 8) who I will call FR, for
reasons that will be clear soon.

There appear to be a lot of people who say that FP is the one who
married Synthia Ann Belcher in 1866 after the death of her first
husband, William Jefferson Strode. I think that the evidence below will
show that FP is definitely not the one and the FR is almost certainly
the Fendal Hagan who married Synthia.

By 1860 Francis Hagan had lost his second wife, married his third
and moved over to Metcalfe Co. You can find him in the 1860 (and
later) Metcalfe Co census, but I didn't copy out that entry. You
will not find Francis' son Fendal (FR) in the 1860 Metcalfe Co
census because he stayed in Monroe Co and was working as a farm
laborer for John Biggers. You will see the 18 year old Fendal(FR)
listed with the Biggers family below.

The first family listed below is that of old Fendal and you will
note his 12 year old son FP (Fendal Palmore).

Now Synthia Ann Belcher Strode's husband, WJ Strode, died
probably in 1865. I will talk about this family at the end of
this note. The Monroe Co marriage records show the following
marriage:

4 Jan 1866 Fendal R Hagan to Cyntha A Strode.

Now Synthia brought with her several children from her first marriage
and one child (James C Strode) from WJ Strode's first marriage to
Elizabeth Biggers (more about this later). By 1870 Fendal and Synthia
had two children of their own and this family is shown below in the
1870 census (second family).

The first family listed is that of old Fendal and Sarah Ann. Now
here is the evidence that Fendal Palmore Hagan did NOT marry Synthia
Ann Belcher. In 1870 Synthia's husband is listed as 28 year old
Fendal R Hagan while 23 year old Fendal Palmore Hagan is shown still
living at home with old Fendall. FR and FP are clearly two different
people. The age of 28 corresponds exactly with that of Francis Hagan's
son Fendal and there are no other Fendal's to be found in Monroe Co in
this census.

More evidence that FP Hagan did not marry Synthia Belcher is
in the 1880 Monroe Co census. In the early 1870s Fendal R and Synthia
Hagan took their family to Sullivan Co, MO, and Synthia died there in
1875. Fendal R Hagan remarried in 1876 and lived in Sullivan Co until
his death in 1910. But look at the 1880 Monroe County census below.
There is Fendal Palmore Hagan still single, still living in his
father's household.

Here is more evidence that Francis Hagan's son Fendal was the
husband of Synthia Belcher (besides the perfect match of the ages).

William Jefferson Strode first married Elizabeth Biggers about
1850 and they had two children. One died young and the other was
James Clark Strode (b 1852). Elizabeth died on 12 Dec 1852 and
WJ Strode married Synthia Belcher in 1853. They had 4 children
with only two (plus James) shown in the 1870 census. I don't
know what happened to the other two.

Now here is what is interesting. Francis Hagan's son Fendal was
living with John C Biggers in 1860. In the 1860 census you see
John's wife listed as M F Biggers. Now M F Biggers is Martha
Frances Strode, sister of WJ Strode. Moreover, John C Biggers
is the brother of Elizabeth Biggers, first wife of WJ Strode.
Thus Fendal(FR) Hagan was living with a family that was very
closely tied to WJ and Synthia Belcher Strode.

I have a lot of this in my WorldConnect database. Go to
