Below is the note on Francis Hagan submitted by Elizabeth Tuck. I have added some comments about some of the family members. My comments are boxed in. Doug Moore moore@asu.edu --------------------------------------------------------------------- Francis HAGAN & Descendants NOTE: Most of my sources are Census Records (listed at end). I have included some info I’m pretty sure of which I haven’t documented. I will enclose that info in brackets. Perhaps some of you might know where I can find the records to confirm or discount the questionable stuff. Francis Hagan b. abt. 1810-1816 KY, KY Census 1840-1880 Spouses: [m1.] Unknown f. b. abt. 1811-1820 [can’t swear they were married.] Living together w/children 1840. Gone by 1850. [I presume she died in 1840s.] m2. Anna [CREWS] b. abt. 1825. Living together w/ children 1850. Gone 1860. [I presume she died in 1850s.] ===================================================================* * The last name and date of birth (as well as here parents' names) * are found in Monroe Co vital stats (1852-1860). * * 1. The birth of John S Hagan (6/6/1853) is recorded with parents * identified as Francis Hagan and Ann F Cruse. * * 2. The death is recorded as follows: Anney Hagan died 9/4/1855 * age 32 * Parents: D and Betty Cruse * * The parents are David and Elizabeth (Smith) Crews. They were * married in Monroe(Barren) Co in 1815 and lived in Monroe Co * into the 1860s. A lot of circumstantial evidence indicates a * close relationship to Nancy Crews Hagan, mother of Fendal and * others. * * ===================================================================* m3. Elizabeth [DARNELL / CLEMONS] b. abt. 1839 [Married: 6 MAY 1858 in Monroe Co, KY] Living together w/ children 1860-1880. Children: Children of Unknown f.: 1. Elizabeth Hagan b. abt. 1838 in [Monroe Co] KY 2. [Nancy Melvina] Hagan b. abt. 1840 in [Monroe Co] KY [Nancy in 1850. Melvina in 1860. Could be two people, I suppose, but I presume it is one.] Not living at w/Francis in 1870. Children of Unknown f. or Anna 3. Fendal [R.] Hagan [AKA: Fred.] b. [14 AUG] 1842 in [Monroe Co] KY 1850 - At home. 1860 - Living with BIGGERS family as farm laborer. 1870 - Head of household w/Synthia A. 39, children & step-children. =====================================================================* * I once wrote a little discussion on Fendal. You can find it at: * * http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/files/hagan/fendal.html * =====================================================================* 4. William Hagan b. abt. 1843 in [Monroe Co] KY 1850 - At home. 1860 -Living with Robert HAGAN family as farm laborer. 1870- Head of household w/Margaret A. 23, children & William MCGUFFY 16, farm laborer. =====================================================================* * I agree that the William Hagan living with Robert Hagan in 1860 * is almost certainly the son of Francis. However, you have mis- * identified the family in the 1870 census. The William S Hagan * in that record is Fendal Reuben Hagan's son, William Stanford * Hagan. His wife is Margaret Ann Walden. * * I am certain (but without absolute proof) that Francis Hagan's * son William married Lucinda Smith Hagan, daughter of Robert * Hagan with whom William was living in 1860. You will find * William and Lucinda living in Barren Co in 1870, just over the * county line from Fountain Run. * * =====================================================================* 5. Elvira Hagan b. abt. 1844-1846 in [Monroe Co] KY 1850, 1860 - At home. 1870 - Not w/ family 6. James Hagan b. abt. 1848 in [Monroe Co] KY 1850 - At home. 1860 - Not w/ family. [Seems to young to leave home. Anyone know anything? Could he be living w/CREWS relatives?] 7. David Hagan b. abt. 1849 in [Monroe Co] KY 1850 - At home. 1860 - Not w/ family. [Seems to young to leave home. Anyone know anything? Could he be living w/CREWS relatives?] =====================================================================* * In the 1860 Metcalfe Co census, Francis Hagan is family number * 956. Not too far away is family 816, Samuel R Gravin. Living * in his household are James Hagan (12) and David Hagan (10). * These are a perfect match for the missing sons of Francis, and * I have no doubt that they are the sons of Francis. These are * not stepchildren of Samuel Graven, because he and wife Elizabeth * were married prior to 1850 and had no children in 1850 in their * household. * * =====================================================================* Children of Anna ?: 8. What’s right?] 1870, 1880 - at home. =====================================================================* * Go back and look at my database. I do not have Ebbie Thomas Hagan * listed as a male. She is definitely a girl. Francis Hagan always * lived as neighbors with Jacob Anderson in Metcalfe Co. In 1864 * Jacob Anderson had a son that he named General Grant Anderson. * (Can you guess what side Jacob fought for in the war?). In 1883 * General Anderson and Francis Hagan's daughter (called Ibby T * Hagan in the census) were married. Records from the Anderson * side of the family call her Ebbie Thomas Hagan. I don't see * any reason to disagree with the Anderson records. * * =====================================================================* 16. Alonzo T. (AKA: Lonzo, Lon, L.T.) (my g-grandfather) b. 1871 Aug 1880 - at home 1900 - Head of household: L.T. wife Nanni & children 17. Clark Hagan b. abt. 1873 in KY 1880 - at home ? [Sylvester C Hagan b: 1875 in Metcalfe Co, KY] This is from Doug Moore’s page. He wasn’t on 1880 Census unless he & Clark are same person. Help, Doug! =====================================================================* * 1875 was one of those years when Kentucky counties were supposed * to be recording vital stats. The Metcalfe records are available * at LDS family history centers and have been transcribed by Sandi * Gorin. The birth of Sylvestor Hagan was recorded in these vital * stats: * 1875 Hagan, Sylvestor C * parents: Francis and Elizabeth (Darnelle) Hagan * * He could well be the Clark Hagan who is listed in the 1880 * census as a son of Francis. It could also be the case that * Sylvestor died before 1880. * * =====================================================================* 18 or 19. Turner Hagan b. abt. 1876 in KY 1880 - at home
