It is often the case that all that is required to answer a genealogical question is to read the census. Anything else is icing on the cake. William Henry Hagan is the 2nd child of Thomas Kelly Hagan and Isabella McEntire. Below is the family of Thomas Kelly Hagan, son of Robert and Elizabeth Goodman Hagan. 1 Thomas Kelly Hagan b: 1849 Allen Co,KY m: Isabella McEntire b: c1852 KY m: April 08,1869 Allen Co,KY 2 Darthula Hagan b: February 1870 Monroe,KY 2 Wiliam Henry Hagan b: April 1871 KY d: July 18,1954 Warren Co,KY 2 George R Hagan b: c1874 KY 2 Ebb H Hagan b: August 31,1877 Warren Co,KY d: July 07,1964 Warren Co,KY 2 Peyton C (Pate) Hagan b: April 01,1880 Warren Co,KY d: March 17,1970 Warren Co,KY 2 Porter T Hagan b: January 07,1883 Warren Co,KY d: March 04,1977 Warren Co,KY 2 Milton Hagan b: September 1887 Warren Co,KY 2 Unice?? Hagan b: July 1888 Warren Co,KY 2 Josie Hagan b: c1892 Warren Co,KY It is easy to follow TK Hagan through the decennial census records from 1850 to 1920. He first appears in 1950 Allen Co with his parents, listed as T Hagan, age 11 months. In 1860 Robert and Elizabeth Hagan are listed in Monroe Co and we see 12 year old TK Hagan listed in the family of his parents. The Allen Co vital stats (see Allen Co Genweb page) record the marriage of Thomas Hagan and Isabella McEntire on 28 Apr 1869 in Allen Co. The minister was Hagan Goodman, who we know was the first cousin of TK Hagan's father, Robert. Then the 1970 Monroe Co census shows TK Hagan and Isabella (age 18) living with Elizabeth Hagan (Robert had died prior to 1870). Also in the household was 5 month old Darthula Hagan (born Feb 1970), the first child of TK and Isabella Hagan. TK Hagan moved to Warren Co, KY, prior to 1880 and appears in the 1880 Warren Co census. Again he is called TK Hagan in the census and she is listed as Isabella. They now have 5 children, the youngest being 2 month old Peyton C (Pate) Hagan. Of course we no longer have the 1890 census. They are still in Warren Co in 1900 (Elkspring District) and are listed as Thomas K Hagan and Isibel Hagan. By 1900 their last 4 children have arrived and are listed on the census. The oldest 5 children are no longer with the family. Ebb, Pate and William Henry have married. Eb and Pate are in Warren Co near their parents, and William Henry can be found in Barren Co with his first child. I don't know what happened to Darthula and George. In my listing of the family at the top of the page, I have question marks after the name Unice. That census was not too hard to read but that one name was garbled on the page and could have been something else. Unice looked as likely an interpretation as any other. In the 1900 census it is stated that Isabella gave birth to 9 children and that 8 are still alive. Thus the 9 listed above are all that they had. The one who was dead in 1900 obviously was either George or Darthula. In the 1910 Warren Co census they appear listed as Thomas and Isabell. The only child still at home is Josie. Also living with them is Lonnie Hagan, the son of Thomas' brother, John Henderson Hagan. The last time I find them is in 1920 Warren Co. This is where the name Tobe shows up. Thomas and Isabella are living alone and they are listed as Tobe Hagan and Belle Hagan. Tobe might simply be a mistake or it could be a nickname. Serina Marrs name was once written as Lysenia by the census taker when he copied it from his notes to the census form. Mistakes like this occur regularly. The claim that Isabella's last name is Lane almost certainly is incorrect. But the issue can be easily resolved. At least four of Thomas' children have death certificates on file with the state: Pate, Porter, Ebb and William Henry Hagan. The death certificate will list the mother's name. In conclusion I will say that the three most important things to do to find who you are looking for are (1) read the census, (2) read the census and (3) read the census. 1
