    Evon,

Its good to hear from you. I have a few free minutes after
lunch so I'll write a short reply.

You wouldn't remeber me but I think that I saw you when you
were very young. I am about 5 years older than you are.

My mom, dad and I would occasionally visit Uncle Edgar Martin
in New Gulf back in the 1940s and perhaps in the early 50s.
Uncle Edgar was my dad's uncle. My dad's mother was Leora, uncle
Edgar's older sister. We lived in Beaumont and would often
spend the weekend in Houston with my mother's folks. From time
to time we would detour by way of New Gulf on Sunday afternoon
and have a short visit with Uncle Edgar, aunt Otha and Evelyn
and Verna Dell. Grandma Martin (Vina) lived until 1946 and we
would stop by and see her in Boling. I can just barely remember
     her.

I recall a short visit with Evelyn one Sunday afternoon when
she had a couple of small children. You must have been one of
     them.

These visits to New Gulf were few and far between and I was
probably around 11-12 years old the last time I visited there
     with my folks.

My dad (J D Moore) was one of 5 brothers born to Avery and
Leora Martin Moore. Leora died in 1918 and Grandma Martin took
Herbert (dad's younger brother) to live with her in Boling and
she more or less raised Herbert by herself. Herbert died during
     WW II .

I have been interested in genealogy for quite a while. I do
have quite a bit on the Deatherage and Martin lines in Roane Co,
TN, but the Russell's have been elusive. I think I now know who
Nancy Melvina Russell's father was and will write this up as soon
as the semester is over (in a few days).

I was talking with my cousin Donnetta (Uncle Thurman Moore's
daughter) recently and we were wondering what ever happened to
Uncle Edgar's family. I see from your note that Evelyn and Verna
Dell lived long lives and passed away just a few years ago.

I need to stop and go to a meeting. I'll get back to you.

   Hi Evon,

Let me give you a little bit of information tonight.
You say that you found some Deatherage info via Frank
Powell. My guess is that Frank Powell took his data from
Rick Tobin's book on the Deatherage family. Rick has put
his entire book on-line and you can see it at:

   http://members.aol.com/Rictobin/

You can jump directly to Abner Deatherage (father of Ellender
   "Nelly" Deatherage):

   http://members.aol.com/Rictobin/gen3pt2.html

Rick Tobin also has constructed a descendancy tree and you can
get to Abner Deatherage there via the URL:

   http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tobin/deathera/pafg04.htm#113

You will notice that this site has the children of Henry Martin
and Nelly Deatherage Martin, who were married in Roane Co on
30 Dec 1849. You can find Henry and Ellender in the Roane Co census
for 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. The nine children can be followed
from census to census and the names in Rick Tobin's book are correct.
I have one or two more middle names listed in my database:

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dougmoore&id=I11429

In the 1880 census you can find newly married Abner and Vina Martin
living next to Henry and Ellender. They had left Roane Co,TN, by
1881 and stayed for about 5 years in Jackson Co,AR. Then they came
   on to Damon by 1886.

  Hi Evon,

I would like to tell you what I know about how the Martins and
Moores got together. Maybe you can fill in some gaps. Most of
what I know was told to me by my dad (JD) and his brother, my Uncle
Thurman Moore. I also found out some things through my own research.

Let me start with Abner and Melvina. They were married in Roane Co,
TN, in 1880 and immediately moved down to Jackson Co, AR. In 1881
Aunt Delia (Ellen Cordelia Martin) was born, their first child. In
1884 my grandmother, Leora Permelia Martin, was born, also in Jackson
County, AR. By 1886 Abner and Melvina had moved on to Damon and in
Nov 1886 they had their 3rd daughter, Josey May Martin. I don't know
anything about Josie May except that she died in 1897. After Josie
May came their 3 sons: James (Jim) in 1889, Uncle Henry (John Henry)
in 1891 and Uncle Edgar (Rufus Edgar) in 1894.

Now Abner Martin's brother, James Alexander Martin, lived with the
family in Damon during at least part of the 1890s decade and he was shown
living with them in Damon in the 1900 census. For all I know, he might
have been with them when they came to Damon from Arkansas.

In 1896 Aunt Delia married Floyd Mays. In 1900 they were living
very near Abner and Melvina in Brazoria Co. By 1900 the first two of
Aunt Delia's 3 children had been born, James in 1897 and Mabel in 1899.

So by 1900, Abner and Melvina were well established in Damon with
one daughter already married and living nearby.

Now let me get the Moores into the picture. In 1886 John Harrison
Moore brought his family from Monroe Co, Kentucky to Hill Co, Texas.
They lived in the small community of Derden, about 30-40 miles south
of Ft Worth. He was married with 5 daughters and one son. The oldest
daughter was Maybelle (who eventually married into the Martin family) and
his son was Avery Moore (my grandfather) who also married into the Martins.
John H Moore's wife, Martha, died in 1887 leaving John with the kids
to raise. According to family tradition, they tried farming in Hill
Co until about 1893, but there were several drought years and times
were tough. For some reason unknown to me, they decided to move down
to the West Columbia area in Brazoria Co in 1893 and they bought a
farm there. I don't know the details, but somehow the Moores and
Martins became friends and the children of the families became close
  friends as well.

Again for reasons unknown to me, John Moore decided to take his
family back to Hill Co in 1899, so they were shown living in the Derden
community again in the 1900 census.

It appears that Abner's brother, James Alexander, had been wooing
John Moore's daughter Maybelle while the Moores were in Brazoria Co.
In 1901 James Alexander went up to Hill Co and convinced Maybelle to
marry him. They took off for Stephens Co, OK, and were married there.
They lived there in Stephens Co for the rest of their lives. Stephens
County is just north of the OK-TX line, north of Ft Worth.

Now there were other relations that had developed between the Moores
and Martins. It appears that Avery Moore had been courting Abner's
daughter Leora. When the Moores went back to Hill Co in 1899, Leora was
just 15 years old while Avery was aout 22. In 1902 Leora convinced her
parents that it would be ok for her to go up to Oklahoma by herself for
a visit with James Alexander and Maybelle Moore Martin. Actually she
had arranaged to meet Avery there and they got married. For the first
several years of their marriage, Avery and Leora lived in Oklahoma with
Jim and Maybelle. Their first child, my dad JD, was born during this period
in 1903. Let me stop with the Moores now and get back to the Martins.

After Leora ran off to get married, Abner and Melvina had the 3 boys
still at home, Jim, Henry and Edgar. Sometime between 1900 and 1910,
Aunt Delia and Floyd Mays left Damon and move up to Mexia in Limestone
county. Limestone Co is just south of Hill Co. In January of 1910 Abner
Martin died. Apparently Melvina (whom I have always called "grandma Martin"
because my dad told me to call her that the first time I ever met her) did
not want to stay on the farm . So Aunt Delia and Floyd came down to
Damon and brought grandma Martin and the boys back to live with them
in Mexia. Actually only Henry and Edgar went back to Mexia with Melvina.
Their brother James Marshall Martin was 21 years old in 1910 and he
had left home by then. I don't know anything about James except that he
died in Kerr Co, TX, in 1969.

Now sometime between 1910 and 1920 grandma Martin returned to
Damon. She was listed in Damon in the 1920 census. Living with her
was her half-brother Ben Clark and her son James. I don't know when
she returned. I can find neither uncle Edgar nor Uncle Henry in the
1920 census. Uncle Edgar married Mary Holeman in 1915 and, after
her death, married Otha in 1919. So I don't know why I can't find
him in 1920. Uncle Henry married Bertha Avera in 1913 so I should be
able to find him somewhere in Texas in 1920 but I can't. I wonder where
  these marriages took place.

In 1930 census grandma Martin was living in Boling and Uncle Henry
one house away from her. Uncle Edgar was in Wharton Co, but I don't
know just where. In 1930 living with grandma Martin in Boling was
Herbert Moore, who was there because of various things that had happened
in the family of my grandparents, Avery and Leora Martin Moore.

This has gotten longer than I intended so I will stop for now.
There are more things to say about the Martins and Moores before
I am through with this so I will continue another day.

You mentioned your Martin bible. This might well be a bible that
originated with Abner and Melvina. I have some thoughts about who
Melvina's parents were, but no solid proof. The bible might provide
some information along these lines. The bible should be transcribed
with all the data written out as well as can be read. I certainly would
like to take a look and see what I can make of it. I have had a lot of
experience reading old handwriting from censuses, deeds and the like. So
I might be able to read most of it. However, you should think twice about
actually giving it away. It belonged to your mother and grandfather, so
you want to be sure that you don't give up something of personal value to you.

    I'll write more later.

   Evon,

Moores are as thick as flies in this country. I have never run
across Cliff and Wendi, but I am sure they probably are not kin. If
you type Moore into Google, you get 14,800,000 hits. Thats a lot of
Moores.

I have been trying to find time to write some more about the Moore-
Martin connections. I have a few pictures you might be able to
identify, but I need to set up the background. Let me remind you that
my grandmother, Leora Martin, married my grandfather Avery Moore in
1902 in Oklahoma and by 1918 they had 5 boys. My dad, JD, was the
oldest and the two youngest were Herbert (about 3 in 1918) and Melvin
(an infant in 1918). In June of 1918 Leora was killed in an accident
involving a runaway horse. They were living in Guymon, OK (in the
panhandle) at the time of the accident. My grandfather didn't handle
the situation very well and it appeared that the younger boys needed
better care than they were getting. So grandma Martin (and I think
also aunt Delia) went up to Guymon and arranged for a neighbor to look
after Melvin, the infant. Grandma Martin herself took the 3 year old,
Uncle Herbert Moore, back to Boling with her. My dad, who was just 16,
helped look after his two brothers, Avery Jr and Thurman, who were 13
and 10 when their mother was killed.

As I understand it, grandma Martin raised Herbert herself and he
was with her until the middle 1930s. Thus I would expect that Evelyn
and Verna Dell must have been around Herbert a lot. He would have been
about 5 years older than Evelyn.

The Moores moved over to Cleburne, TX, around 1920. I think my dad
would go to Boling to see grandma Martin and Herbert. Finally my
parents married in 1927 and moved to Houston about 1928-29. I believe
that throughout their stay in Houston (1928-1940) my parents
frequently drove down to Boling on Sunday afternoons to see grandma
Martin and Uncle Herbert. Of course they would also see Uncle Edgar
and Otha and Evelyn and Verna Dell. During at least part of that
period Uncle Henry Martin and Bertha lived in Boling so my dad and
mother got to know them well.

By the middle 1930s Herbert was ready to go out on his own. About
that time someone took a picture of Herbert and grandma Martin. The
picture was taken at Boling and ended up in my dad's picture
collection. I am attaching a copy of that picture.

Herbert died in WW II and my dad collected his belongings from the
Army. Shortly before he died in 1980, my dad ran across this packet of
items that had belonged to Herbert. There were two pictures that my
dad couldn't identify, but he believed that Herbert had probably taken
the pictures while he lived with grandma Martin in Boling. I am
attaching these pictures. Do you have any idea who the kids are in the
pictures?

There is also a picture that I know to be your mother when she
was a girl. I am attaching this also.
