NOTES BY ESTELLE MOORE GONCE COPIED FROM A BOOK BELONGINGTO HER FATHER - WILLIAM TURNER MOORE -------------------------------------------------------------------- In the following pages will be found a history of the family of Jefferson Moore and his ancestry back to his grandfather Jonathan Moore: Also of Jefferson Moore's wife back to her grandfather Benagy McLeran. Both of whom emigrated from the mother country in early 1700's, we do not know the exact year. Moore came from Scotland and McLeran from Ireland. Jonathan Moore came from Scotland to America in the early part of the Eighteenth century and settled in Shenandoah Co - Va. at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountain and married to Scytha George. He also had a brother Sam who settled there, of whom we have lost trace.. Jonathan Moore had three sons, whose names were Joe[Joel], John and David. John Moore at about the age of 17 yrs. left his father's home in Va. and went to East Tenn., about Jonesboro. After remaining there for two or three years he came to Kentucky and settled on the head waters of Line Creek in what is now the South Central part of Monroe County. This was about 1810. He was married to Margaret Hestand in 1814. He remained here until his death in 1854 and raised a family of seven (7) children whose names are as follows- Joel, Jefferson W., Scott, Scythia, Philip, Elizabeth and Elzada. Jonathan Moore was born in Scotland (date unknown). John Moore was born in Shenandoah Co. Va. 1782 Jefferson Moore was born in Monroe Co. Ky. January 29, 1819. Jefferson Moore's wife's name was Lucy McLeran. Her grandfather and grandmother came from Ireland about 1700. Benagy McLeran and wife were born in Ireland. Date unknown. His son Benagy married Elizabeth Jarvis about 1830. Several children were born to them, among whom was Lucy McLeran who married Jeff Moore Nov.2, 1854. The above Elizabeth Jarvis McLeran later married Mr. Burris and had a son and daughter - Winfield and Eliza ,twins. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Pasted in back of this little book: Virginea Shanon Doah County Joall More was born March 15th in the year of our Lord 1768. -------------------------------------------------------------------- ==================================================================== Note by Doug Moore: Joel Moore is mentioned twice. The first is in the list of sons of Jonathan: Joe, John and David. The second is the reference to his birth pasted in the back of the book. Joel apparently was called Joe by his friends. This has caused his name to be listed as Joseph in several records. He is listed as both Joel and Joseph in the early Barren County order books, the Barren County tax records and the minutes of the Big Pigeon Baptist Church. Several of the dates above are not accurate. In particular John Moore did not come as late as 1810 to Barren Co. He was there at least by 1803-04 and almost certainly lived on the land of his brother Joel for a number of years (this is supported by the tax records). ======================================================================
