               Some Excerpts from Mill Creek Church Minutes 1798-1820


   John Mulkey, Abraham Hestand, David Jobe and others left the Big Pigeon
River area in Cocke Co, TN, in 1797-98 and came to Monroe(Barren) Co, KY,
where they used the constitution of the Big Pigeon Baptist Church as the
founding document of the Mill Creek Church.  Excerpts given below involve
items concerning Moores, Hestands and others.

            Summary of Items Involving Moores

1. Regina Moore (very probably the wife of Joel Moore) and her father
   Abraham Hestand joined the church in Apr 1801 by letter.
2. Joel Moore joined by letter in May 1802 (his excommunication from
   the Big Pigeon Church had been rescinded in Dec 1801).
3. In Mar 1806 Joel Moore was asked to visit a church member concerning
   some unspecified church matter.
4. In Oct 1806 Francis Baxter and John Gist were appointed to visit Joel
   Moore concerning some unspecified behavior that was unacceptable to
   the church.
5. In Dec 1806 Joel Moore was excommunicated due to his errant behavior.
6. In Sep 1820 Regina Moore was received into the church by recantation.

   These are the only entries involving the surname Moore found in those
minutes which still exist from the years 1800-1820.  In Jan 1821 William
Moore joined by experience.  This William Moore was Joel Moore's son who
was 18 yerars old at the time.  William's name appears in the minutes
from time to time until he went to Illinois in 1835. Regina's reinstatement
was possibly timed to motivate William to join the church.

 8 Mar 1800  the church met etc. 1st. By letter received James Harlan and
             wife, David Jobe and wife, and Samuel Vaughn, DANIEL HESTAND,
             John Maddux and wife, and Edmund Wade. ......
11 Apr 1801  Saturday.  The church met and divine worship proceeded to
             business as follows: 1st A door was opened for the reception of
             members, five came forward and joined by letter: ABRAHAM
             HESTAND, Rebekah Wiley, REGINA MOORE ...... (rest not named).
13 Mar 1802  Saturday.  ....... 2nd Brethren Samuel Vaughn and DANIEL
             HESTAND were ordered by the church to cite Brother Joel Nelson
             to attend next meeting in course.  3rd brother HENRY HESTAND
             having for several meetings withdrew himself from his seat in
             the church Brethren John Mulkey, Obedeah Howard, and Benjamin
             Gist Sr are apointed to use labors with him and know his
             reasons for so doing. ......
 7 May 1802  Friday.  Church met and after devine service proceeded as
             follows: 1st Door opened for the reception of members there 
             came forward and joined by letter: JOEL MOORE, Ann Carr, and
             Rachel Springer by experience. ......
14 Aug 1802  Saturday.  ....... 3rd Appointed Brethren Thomas Sullivan,
             Samuel Vaughn, and ABRAM HESTAND to use labours with James
             Green and wife for reconciliation and make report next meeting
             in course. 4th BENJAMIN DENTON applied for letter of dismission
             for him and wife - granted. .......
 2 Oct 1802  Saturday  ....... 6th The church appointed Brethren Thomas
             Sullivan, Samuel Vaughn & ABRAM HESTAND to labour with sister
             Greene and also to cite her to next meeting to give
             satisfaction for her errors. ......
   Mar 1806  Saturday. ...... 6th JOEL MOORE and Thomas Wiley to cite John
             Gulley
10 Oct 1806  Friday. ...... 3rd JOEL MOORE suspended from priviledges 
             appointed Brother Francis Baxter & John Gist to labour with 
             him and cite him to next meeting. .....
13 Dec 1806  Church met etc. 1st The refference concerning JOEL MOORE called
             for the referred report no satisfaction obtain but he still
             persisting in cinterancing doctrines contrary to the gospel and
             refusing to comply with the call and request of the church. We
             therefore say that he is none of us.
 3 Jun 1820  Saturday. ..... 1st Received Sister HESTERE HESTAND, Mary
             Combs, ELIZABETH PLUMLEY, and Jean Tate with Brn WILLIAM
             PLUMLEE, JOHN HESTAND, John Combs, and JOSHUA DENTON each      
             joined by experience. .......
   Jul 1820  The church met accordingly at the widow DENTON'S and opened
             way for the reception of members and received Sister ELIZABETH
             DENTON and John Welch and Jerrama Rich each joined by
             experience.
 3 Sep 1820  Saturday. ...... and received Sister JEAN DENTON & Sister
             REGENER MOORE by recantation.
