Moores in Barren and Monroe Counties Tax Lists 1799-1845 Compiled by Doug Moore The Barren county tax lists for 1799-1820 and the Monroe County tax lists for 1820-1845 have been searched for Moores. I have listed below all that I found. I believe that I did not not miss any. The lists were not in alphabetical order, but all names beginning with a given letter were listed together. 1. The first entry is the date. After 1810 only the year was given. But prior to 1810 the month and day of the entry was listed. One might infer that two entries with the same date could be for neighboring farms. 2. The second entry gives the name of the tax-payer. 3. The third entry is the number of acres on which tax was paid and the watercourse associated with the land. 4. The fourth entry is from a column with heading "in whose name entered". This was the name of the original grantee of the land. Adjacent to this column were two columns labeled "in whose name surveyed" and "in whose name patented". These were usually left blank, but sometimes a name appeared in the "surveyed" column. This normally would be the name of someone who had acquired the land from the original grantee before it had been surveyed. When there was an entry in this column I included in parentheses after the name of the grantee. These three columns were discontinued in 1837. 5. The number of males in the household 21 years old or over. 6. The number of horses reported. 7. The number of cattle reported. This column first appeared in 1837. 8. The number of children in the family between ages 5 and 16. This column first appeared in 1840. 9. The assessed value of all property. This column first appeared in 1814. NOTES: I don't know if there is anything to be inferred from how close together the entries occur. If two consecutive entries below were separated by, for example, 4 names in the original tax list, then I have written "sk4" (skip 4) between those entries below. If there were many names between two consecutive entries below, then I separate them with ---------- . If two names are not separated below, then they occurred as consecutive entries in the original. In the early years dates were listed. When adjacent listings also have the same date, this almost certainly means that they must have lived near each other and that the county assessor visited each of them on that same day.
