[NI0005] Elizabeth was well thought of. People who remembered her said they always loved it when she came to visit. She would talk and play with the children. She always liked to be busy...darn socks, churn, cook, or whatever the people needed. She would smoke a pipe and chew tobacco. It seems she had quite a temper. There's a story where she pulled the mailman off his horse.

[NI0026] Stories told about Sam:
One night he heard cats fighting. He opened the door to the kitchen as just as he did, one of the cats made a run for the loft above the door. Not realizing the door was open, the cat ran up him.
Jesse James and his gang visited Sam at his home one time. One of his kinfolk got arrested for stealing a horse. He was in jail and they were fixin' to hang him. Some kinfolk got together and went to visit him the day before he was to hang. One of them pushed Bee's wax into the lock, went home and made a key. The jail was left ungaurded at night, so the next morning the prisoner was gone and hasn't been seen or heard of since.

[NI0026] Sam was the trustee of Maple Grove School wich was built on his farm. He died in his sleep. His son, Tommy, said he could remember climbing over him to get out of bed the morning he was found dead.

[NI0041] 1850 Price, 33, was listed in the Washington County, Tennessee, census, with Elizabeth 30, Washington 7, Mary 5, Samuel 3, and his mother, Leah 66. all born in Tennessee.
1851 Price and family moved to Monroe County, Kentucky with other Fords, Jobes, Arterburns, and other families.
1860 Price, 40, was listed in the Monroe County, Kentucky, census with Elizabeth 35, Washington 17, Samuel 13, Mary 15, William 11, Benjamin 8, Lara 6, Richard 4, and Elizabeth 1.
1863 or there abouts, A story is told about Rebel soldiers coming to his house and asking for food and horses. He fed them and asked that they not take his food and horses as he was a very sick man and could not work to make a living. They asked about the horses in the pasture next to his and he said they weren't his. They left taking those horses.
1996 Oct. 11, I searched the Ford graveyard and only found 4 readable stones, 3 intact. I was told there had been 2 house trailers set on the graveyard and there was no fence to keep out the livestock. There are many fieldstones there in rows. Gaynelle Gee Foley told me that day that an insurance company had put up $500.00 to clean it up, but it was a poor effort and many graves were destroyed by those who did the work. A great loss.

[NI0041] James R. Jobe

[NI0041] Price's testimony appears in the records of the court case between John Ford and others (descendents of slaves) vs. Grant Ford and others. "I reckon I am aquainted with the general character of R. G. Hale, wife, and daughter, Elizabeth Jane Hale. From what I know of them myself I cannot disbelieve them. R. G. Hale is my wife's uncle. The Fords and me are second cousins. I have heard old James Whitlock and William Copas talking about them. And it is likely I have heard the Fords and their relation more than anyone else."

Tombstone on grave reads: "Rest mother Rest in quiet sleep while friends in
sorrow o'er thee weep."

[NI0144] [Hale.FTW]

[NI0144] Tammy Foley Wells lists this inscription on Susan's grave: "Rest mother rest in quiet sleep while friends in sorrow o'er thee weep."
On Oct. 11, 1996, I searched that graveyard and only found 4 readable stones, 3 intact.

[NI0364] After 1976, "Peter Hammer, my great grandfather owned two tracts of land. Tract No. 1, the home of his son, Richard Hammer who raised his family on this tract and remained there until his death in 1896. There was no settlement until the time of his death. My mother, Jennie Hammer Jobe and three brothers bought the heirs out of the Richard Hammer Tract No. 1. At the same time my mother and her brothers bought Martin K. Hammer out of Tract No. 2.
Martin K. Hammer raised his family on Tract No. 2 and lived there until the time of his death in 1907. A settlement has never been made of Tract No. 2 up to the present time. The only heir known about was Sarah Hammer True who sold her share to Andrew Crawford on the 28th day of November 1853. Andrew Crawford sold Sarah Hammer's share to Martin K. Hammer. I had never heard of these deeds to this tract of land until I was invited by Clay Hundley to talk about this in 1976, when these tracts of land were put up for sale.
Choice trees were sold from Tract No. 2 at different times and they would always consult Richard B. Hammer, the youngest son of Richard Hammer because they knew that his father owned part of the place. After R. B. Hammer died in 1940 they sold $15,000 worth of timber to Fain Brothers, dealers in timber, and then in 1946 they sold $2,000 more to Fain Brothers.
There were never any improvements made on this land and there is only one or two acres of tillable soil on this land and all buildings have fallen down."

[NI0365] 1991 March, Daily Times, Glasgow, Kentucky: Five-year-old Tompkinsville Girl Enjoys Dancing, Appalachian Style
"As the needle screeches across the record, Jamie Rush covers her ears with her hands and squinches up her face. But as soon as the twang of the music begins, she relaxes.
The music is one of the things Jamie Rush, a 5-year-old from Tompkinsville, likes best about takind Appalachian Clogging lessons. With her shoulder-length blonde hair bouncing up and down as she moves through the steps to Turkey and The Straw, and her hands stuck in the pockets of her jeans, Rush makes clogging seem like a breeze. "She does really well for her age," Lottie Lawhorn said of Jamie...
Lawhorn said Rush's mom, Sheila, helps her out alot. Sheila Rush has been taking clogging lessons along with her daughter. Both first began taking cloggong lessons in March of 1990...
"She wanted to take tap dancing lessons so bad she was driving us crazy," Mrs. Rush said. "I guess it was because she watches Shirley Temple videos."

[NI0458] Excerpt from Pioneer Baptist Church Records of South-Central Kentucky and the Upper-Cumberland of Tennessee 1799-1899, pgs. 446-448

[NI0458] The following story appeared in the Tompkinville News September 14, 1967....
"Time passes on, and each day we grow older, and soon the day comes when we are called to leave this earth.
A month ago as we started our vacation, we made a special trip to the southeastern part of Kentucky to visit a saintly old aunt of my husband's, who was in the hospital. Saturday afternoon we received a message that the call had come for her to leave this world.
She had lived alone in the hills of Kentucky with no relatives except her brother, Osco, who lives in Ridgefarm, Illinois. Since he is in his 80's and unable to make the trip, it was up to Raymond and his sister, Grace, to see that this dear aunt was properly buried.
We had never had the experience of taking care of all the details for a funeral and it had been 20 years since Raymond had lived in that part of the country and with the customs there being so much different than ours, it was indeed an awakening experience.
We chose an simple casket to fit the ways of the old-fashioned lady, decided on flowers, and walked through the wet grass of the cemetery to find just the proper place for burial. Many of the graves were marked with only a stone from the hillside.
There were no set visiting hours, consequently someone stayed at the funeral home at all times andthe country folk would come to view the body, tell us what a kind sweet lady and neighbor she had been, take a chair and set for a few hours, then quietly leave.
Since we didn't know many people there, although everybody was a cousin of some degree to someone else, we didn't konw who to get for pallbearers. The funeral director set our minds at ease when he said there would be plenty of men around when it came time to carry the casket. Sure enough, when Monday morning came, there were several volunteers.
Only a small procession wound its way along the narrow roads, up the hill, to the little country church where she was a member. I thought it was a pitiful few who were attending the last rites of a native of the community, but as we made the last bend in the road I saw there were many who had gathered at the church, some had walked over a mile to be there. They came dressed in their best clothes, which for many was a clean pair of work clothes, the ladies in long cotton dresses they had made, some from two or three different kinds of material.
The service and the people were so impressive it made me wonder of the fast, fast world we live in. Those slow-moving, serious-thinking, God-fearing people are the backbone of our country. But not many are left, they have been gobbled up in this thing called society and business.
The pews were made of boards about three inches wide, spaced an inch apart. About a dozen people left their seats and assembled in the front of the church to form a choir. They were refered to as the singers.
There was a piano but no one played as one of the good brethren of the church led the group through four verses of two songs. I have never heard such beautiful harmonizing and so much feeling in a hymn.
After kneeling in prayer, the pastor read from the 15th chapter of 1st Corinthians. He told how we would enter Heaven, not because we belonged to the church and not because we had been baptized, but because we could testify that we had been born again.
The singers walked around the casket and veiwed the body, then sang 'In the Sweet By and By', as the rest of the congregation passed by the casket.
We walked up the hill to the cemetery, followed by the crowd, and as the morning sunlight began to warm the earth, we laid Aunt Nettie to rest. Down the hill, the spring where she had wet her lips many times, flowed on"

[NI0458] .... and was written by the wife of Mrs. Rich's nephew, Raymond Arnett.
The chuch in this instance was Mt. Poland Baptist Church, Monroe County, Kentucky; the song leader was Reed Ford. It can truly be said that a seed of the old pioneer Baptists yet remains in that section that is not wholly worn out. Here the old long-legged deacon (usually in faded overalls) leads the congregation in 'Amazing Grace' and 'There is a Fountain'. Here the unlettered, plain-spoken ridge runner from Brimstone Ridge, Tennessee still preaches the old-fashioned 'Hell Fire and Damnation' gospel...

W. D. Ford, Jr. said that his father said the Fords intermarried because of limited choice (their neighbors were Fords) and to keep wealth in the family. He said they did it to such a degree that they almost destroyed themselves. (two of W. D., Jr.'s great-fathers were brothers.

[NI0490] Sep. 3, 1998, William D. Ford wrote: "Avery Green Moore, and Cora Ford were always on our list to visit when
we went to Tompkinsville. Reed, Earl, Ovie, Clifford always seem part of my
Family. I can remember Reed from the time I was two years old and could
probably write a bit of his family history, except of exact dates. He lived
with us for years. Reed William, his oldest son probably still lives near
Fort Knox where he retired from military service. Reed just died a few
years back He married Ana Lee Applegate when she was about 14. Ovie and
Cora I think had lot to do with my recovery from diptheria when I must have
been about 4 or five. We had been down to Tompkinsville and I got sick
while there. After being very sick for a long time I heard the doctor tell
Dad he was giving me a third shot which would kill or cure. I decided I had
better get better and sometime along the way Ovie and Cora came and kept me
entertained during my sickness. Think we were all quarentined for some time.
Avery and Cora lived a very hard life. About as hard as anyone I have
ever known. During the summer after I had graduated from the 8th grade, Mom
was close to death and someone decided she was going to die so she went to
the hospital to experts at Lexington KY. They found she was deficient in
Vitamin K. It took years for her to recover but she did and had a lot of
good years afterwards. Anyway, Dad and I made his annual trip to
Tompkinsville for hands to help house tobacco, and Dad and I wound up
sleeping together in what must have been a single bed, straw tick, at Laura
Bell Ford's house. Sleep, we didn't! After laying awake till about 2:30 in
the Morning, (No lights, to bed early), Dad announced that he was going over
to see Avery, that he would be getting up early and that would give me a
chance to get some sleep. No Way! I had had enough too and so away we went.
After waking Cora and Avery up, we all sat and talked until time for
breakfast and a little later and Avery said he had butchered either a goat
or a sheep, (I don't remember which), which we could have for breakfast.
That was the only thing they had in the house to eat! No Bread or anything
else. Dad and they enjoyed it very much. But as for me, I tried but I could
not take one bite. Later on we went on to Tompkinsville and nothing was
open. It was late in the afternoon before I got anything to eat.
From what I have heard, Avery was not very fond of work. After trying to raise a living on a rock I can understand how one might get that way. I
think he had one of the poorest farms in Monroe County, I know Cora would go
and do washing, housework and just about anything for people to earn money
or barter. Guess they would have starved to death if she hadn't."

She writes in another part of her book: Big Dan Hammer said if he married a dozen times he would a Ford every time. He married 3 Fords... 1. Belle 2. Louisa 3. Kizzie. Dan was a farmer when he married Belle, when he married Louisa, he was a Monroe County Jailer and he was a Jailer when he died. She said he had no children.
