MOORE NEWS Volume I May 22, 1996 Issue 1 SALUTATIONS Welcome everyone! Now we are there - - - - Volume I, Issue I. Nobody ever had a page blanker than the one I am writing on at this moment. I may never have another opportunity like this. Your personal profiles are rolling in and I'm compiling them as fast as I can. You may not see yours for a day or two, but don't despair. If I got it, it will appears. NEW MEMBERS For the next few days, we're all new members, so we'll have lots of personal profiles showing up here as quickly as I can get them all in. I'll start with mine so no one will be shy. My name is Joyce Browning. I was born in Stokes County, NC, at the foot of the Sauratown Mountains. The scenes of my childhood were not too different from the scenes of the VA/NC Moores who lived in these mountains over two hundred years ago. When they came here, these mountains were an American frontier. I was five when my parents moved to Raleigh, NC, and that's where I lived for the next forty years. After my husband's death and when our children were in college, an opportunity to move to Tappahannock, VA, sort of dropped in my lap. This new opportunity took me to St. Margaret's School in Tappahannock, Virginia, a charming old town on the Rappahannock River. Gradually, one cautious step at a time, I managed to get myself moved to metropolitan Northern Virginia where I worked for CalTech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. My team's responsibility was to write the definitions and requirements for the American Space Station, now the International Space Station. Later I was transferred to JPL's office at NASA HQ in downtown Washington and coordinated the administrative services of NASA's Visiting Senion Scientists Program. One of my sons still lives in Raleigh and is unmarried. The other two live in the Washington area. I have three startlingly beautiul and brilliant grandchildren: Caroline, the most recent of the Caroline Matilda namesakes is 4. Mark, already oriented to computers, will be 3 tomorrow. Our little Gerber baby, Judson, was 2 in March. I recently retired, so when Judy Alley pulled us together, I saw an opportunity for a project I would enjoy. My Moore Family delimma is: My Father's Moore line is through Caroline Matilda Moore, the daughter of Samuel D. Moore and Matilda Franklin. They married in Surry County, NC, in 1827. I recently learned that his full name was Samuel Dalton Moore and he was the son of William Moore and Jane Hanby, and the grandson of Rodham Moore who died in Patrick County, NC, in 1811. This information conflicts with information I have from my Mother's Dalton/Moore line, to wit: Old Samuel Dalton was the Father of Sarah Matilda Dalton who married Jonathan Hanby of Pittsylvania Co VA in1769. They lived in the portion of Pittsylvania that became Patrick Co. Their daughter, Jane Hanby, married William Moore. However, this family traces its descent from John Moore of Albemarle County VA. So, my question is: Who were the parents of Rodham Moore? And were two separate Moore families living in old Pittsylvania County VA? BIOGRAPHY Gabriel Moore, the son of Matthew Redd Moore and his wife, Letitia (Dalton) Moore, had the best educational advantages of the day. He was born about 1785 and died on 9 Jun 1844 near Caddo Texas. He was married once and divorced. Gabriel Moore was in college at Chapel Hill, N.C. In Wheeler's History of N.C. it can be seen that he served in the Senate of N.C. He moved to Alabama, near Huntsville. He became Governor of Alabama, and he served in the U.S. Senate. He was a wealthy farmer and lived on his plantation near Huntsville, AL. Later in life, when people had grown wild over the possibilities of Texas, he moved to Texas.
