MOORE NEWS Volume I June 19, 1996 Issue 5 SALUTATIONS I'm increasing the volume of introductions - playing catch-up. Thanks, all of you who are sending in your bios and family sketches. Another week or two of current members should get us all acquainted. Don't you agree with me that we Moores are a pretty accomplished and interesting group of folks? Wait till you meet the rest of us! A touch of editorial license . . . . . My Courthouse visit to Albemarle and Louisa Counties was busy, busy, busy. Lots of stuff for later. Coming home, I took to the back roads, crossing the Southwest Mountains at Turkey Sag Gap. Except for the addition of a little asphalt and two or three one-lane bridges, this road (Route 640) hasn't changed much since a Moore/Dalton ancestor, Samuel Dalton, and Thomas Walker laid it out in 1746. There were huge old gnarled cedars which must have been there then. And you don't have to guess where "the sag" is either. The heavily shaded road dips way down into a hollow and crosses a muddy little brook, Turkey Sag Creek. The term "creek" is complimentary. Incidentally, Thomas Walker above built the first English cabin in present Kentucky when he led a "discovery" group to the "west country." A little further along, I stopped to talk to a very presentable looking older gentleman who was observing while his wife rode the riding lawn mower in the yard of an old church. A typical Virginia gentleman, he couldn't have been more charming or more pleasant and invited me in to see the church The old brick church was built in 1857 on the site of an earlier Baptist Church which was founded in 1795. He walked over to a nearby tree and took the key off a nail and we went entered the stately old church. Two of its large, arched stained glass windows were Tiffany glass! The woman mowing the grass as her very charming husband observed, the key hanging on the knob of a tree, Tiffany stained glass windows in a church on an obscure country road . . . this could happen in only Virginia. NEW MEMBERS BILL COPPEDGE (coppedge@interaccess.com) joins us from Illinois. He has done a fantastic job on his family history so I'm looking forward to getting some of it for MOORE NEWS. ****I've been at genealogy for about 25 years. My home county, Maury County Tennessee, is rich with history and people that appreciate it. My mother's lines come from Maury County since the early 1800's. All original county records survive. I am an only child and have had many relatives give me scraps of information over the years. None of it has ever been organized. Most of my Moore info comes from a cousin in her 80's in Columbia Tennessee. She had never gotten around to organizing this information. It took me about a month to do that. I have detailed info on many other lines. My computer program, Reunion, contains almost 6000 people. The great thing about computer genealogical programs is that they allow you to organize this information and avoid redundancies while making sense of it all. While no program will do all that you would want, Reunion is the best program to me as its footnoting capabilities and automatic report generation are incredible. I have a cousin who has 29000 people in his Reunion file, and he is more of a stickler to detail than I am! I can send you Tafel reports or this info spun many different ways. --------- KEN MOORE (KenMo) from Canada has joined our group and sends the information below which includes his Tiny Tafel. Welcome, Ken, I hope you have as much fun as the rest of us are having. I'll check at the National Genealogical Society Library to see if they have Philadelphia or New Jersey information. ****I have found from years of researching the MOORE name that they are a very prolific people. There are Moores everywhere. However, not to be daunted, I keep trying and I think you and your group have the same intentions. My Moore family roots have come from the Philadelphia area as far back as I can trace them so far. This will add another area to those of your NEWS. But first of all let me give you some of my own background. I was born in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1921 and attended school there. I started at the University of Alberta but had to interrupt that to enlist in the RCAF in WWII, eventually serving in England and, for a short time in 1943 in Tunisia. Before returning home at the end of the war I married an English girl who will have blessed my life for 51 years at the end of this month. After returning home I returned to my Engineering course at the University and came to Toronto, Ontario, to complete post-graduate studies. I joined a consulting engineering firm in Toronto and worked for them for 34 years. We had twin sons born in Toronto. One son was killed in a motor accident just after his 21st birthday. Our other son became a Biochemist and for a time worked in Houston, Texas where our granddaughter was born. Later they moved to Mobile, Alabama, where our son works in research at the University of South Alabama. Our daughter-in-law also works in research at the university but in a different field. Our grandson was born in Mobile. We do not get to see them very often, but talk frequently on the phone and now that I have joined AOL we can send email back and forth. My ancestry is as follows. I won't try to include all the maternal ancestors except spouses: Kenneth Wayne Moore, b. 13 Apr 1921 at Edmonton, Alberta, mar. to Dorothy Mary Camamile on 30 Jun 1945 in England. Presently living in Metropolitan Toronto. My father was Artie Guy Moore, b. 02 Nov 1893 at Jaqua, Cheyenne Co., Kansas, mar. to Florence Demers on 04 Jun 1919 at Vermilion, Alberta, d. 03 Sep 1964 at Richmond, B.C., bur. Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto. My Grandfather was Joseph M. Moore, b. 10 Jan 1863 at Moulton, Appanoose Co., Iowa, mar. to Mary Eleanor Miller on 10 Mar 1887 at Moulton, Iowa, d. 15 Mar 1940 in California, bur. Jarrow, Alberta. My great-grandfather was Amos Lewis Moore, b. 11 Aug 1814 at Philadelphia, Pa. mar. first to Lucretia Ann McIlroy on 02 Mar 1846 at Pike Co., Illinois, mar. second to Margaret D. McIlroy on 04 Feb 1851 at Pike Co., Illinois, d. 02 Jul 1897 at Appanoose Co., Iowa, bur. Hilltown Cemetery. (My line is through Margaret D. McIlroy.) My great-great-grandfather was Samuel J. Moore, b. ca. Feb 1765 at Philadelphia, Pa. mar. first to Catherine Taylor on 16 Feb 1800 at Philadelphia, Pa. mar. second to Catherine Mires on ca.1818 at Philadelphia(?), d. 22 Dec 1862 at Glassboro, Gloucester Co., New Jersey. (My line is through Catherine Taylor.) My great-great-great-grandfather was James Moore who was married to Elizabeth at the time of Samuel's birth in Philadelphia. Some years ago my wife told me that if I didn't write all this genealogy into a book form, the whole research would probably get lost when I die so I wrote the story and have sent copies to various relatives that were interested and to several genealogical and historical societies. The latter societies were a hope that someone else would see them and contact me with additional information. So far no response from that direction. Unfortunately, all that I know about James and Elizabeth Moore is their names as given on the death record in the New Jersey archives. There were a number of James Moores in Philadelphia around that time, apparently, but so far I have not come across the right one. If anyone can help it would sure be appreciated. ----- JOAN (MOREME/2) sends the below introduction. Her Moore line traces back to Sonoma, NC in 1878. I hope someone will tell both of us where Sonoma NC is. *****Here is a brief note on who I am. First of all I seem to be the kind of person who does things out of sinc with the rest of the world. Most people grow-up, go to college, move to California from the mid-west, have a career, get married and settle down. Well, I was born and raised in California. Got married and moved to Illinois. Got unmarried, went to college and received my B.S. in Accountancy from the Univ. of Ill. at the ripe old age of 42. Moved back to California. Eight years later I received my MBA from Pepperdine and am now Financial Controller for the Electronics division of a U.K. Company located in San Diego. I am about four years away from retirement. Not quite counting the days, but certainly the financial quarters. I have two sons, one in Ohio and one here in the San Diego area. Each son provided me with a dividend of a granddaughter plus the youngest son added a little interest by giving me a grandson. I love computers, bought "Family Tree Maker" and was hooked on genealogy. My one and only Moore so far is my grandmother, Julia Jennetta Moore b. 1878 Sonoma, N.C. Married Fred N. McConell 1901 (he was from Hayesville, N.C but they were married in Hiawassee Ga.), lived in Hayesville until 1902 and then moved to Kansas. Died 1915 in childbirth with her seventh child. Now the mystery is...where is Sonoma, NC. I am supposing that it is a small township or hamlet etc. somewhere in the vicinity of Hayesville which is in the southwestern part of NC. If anyone out there can help me find SONOMA NC I would be most appreciative. Well I guess this wasn't so "brief" after all. I look forward to getting to know all of you "Moores". QUERIES VOLUNTEER NEEDED. Someone has suggested we solicit a volunteer who's willing to start a data base on the family information that comes in. Can any of you take on this task? --------- HARRY (H Silcox) is seeking encouragement. We should, shouldn't we? ****Andy Griffin's mother is Genevieve Moore. She married Carl Griffin. Therefore!! I wonder what cousin, what removed he is to us. Also the famous Siamese Twins lived in the Surry County area. They married two Bunker family sisters. They had 21 children between them. Thanks ya'll. ------ JOAN(MORME/2) is seeking the family of Rebecca MOORE, who married William FRAME in Clark Co., KY, on 30 April 1811. The 1810 census for Clark Co lists 6 Moore families, and each had females that could have been Rebecca Moore: Wm. Moore, Elizabeth Moore, Anthony Moore, Obediah Moore, Philip Moore, and Catherine Moore. Which, if any, is Rebecca's family? Rebecca and her family probably have VA origins. (Comment from Joyce: Lots of Moores went to Kentucky. Can some of us get the ball rolling in Kentucky?) For those of you not familiar with NC family history study, Ms Linn's abstracts of NC counties are often the ones used to research from afar. She is a well respected family historian. Moore Lineage, Generation 6 -- JAMES MOORE: James Moore, a saddler by trade, died in 1787 in York County, South Carolina. He is said to have been born c1712 in Ireland, is said to have been the eldest son of Alexander Moore and his wife Rose Cowan who are said to have come from Ireland to Pennsylvania 1715-18. After reaching maturity, James Moore is said to have migrated to Virginia where he met Rachel Black at the home of his sister Margaret Moore who had married William Black, brother of Rachel. James Moore and Rachel Black are said to have been married in Virginia some time before 1756, some time after they removed to what is now York County, SC.....Rachel Moore predeceased her husband. James Moore died in York County SC in 1787. The estate papers recorded in Columbia contain an inventory of the estate, dated 17 October 1787 and recorded 18 July 1789, with appraisal of Richard Sadler, Samuel Rainey, and James Mitchell. I think that Mary Moore, wife of Christopher Flowers, was Mary Moore, sister of James Moore, b 1768 in Ireland, and that he probably came to this country with his sister Mary and her husband Christopher Flowers. Eli Malangthon Moore was the son of Joseph H. Moore and Grandson of James Moore. ----------------- Below are several generations of Moore births recorded in St. Peter's Vestry Book, New Kent County VA. MOORE MISCELLANY The following extract is from "The North Carolina Booklet, Great Events in North Carolina History," January 1920, Vol XIX - No. 3. The excerpt describes part of President George Washington's southern tour which took him to a Moore home in Virginia (perhaps Amherst Co) and to the Virginia home of NC Gov. Alexander Martin, member of an ancestral Moore family. The material in quotation marks is from George Washington's Diary. Maybe someday, we'll discover whose ancestor owned Moore's Tavern near Carter's Ferry on the James River where the First President spent the night of Wednesday, the 8th of June 1791. ****It has long been a moot point as to whether Governor Martin entertained President Washington at Guilford Courthouse, or at Danbury, his plantation on the Dan in Rockingham County. It is true that "Alexander Martin, Go" was enumerated in the first federal census, 1790, in Rockingham County. . . . . He did the honors in Martinsville (VA) where he also had a home. "Thursday, June 2, 1791. "In company with the Governor, I set out by four o'clock for Guilford, breakfasted at one Dobsons, at the distance of eleven miles from Salem and dined at Guilford, sixteen miles farther, where there was a considerable gathering of people who had received notice of my intention to be there today, and came to satisfy their curiosity. On my way I examined the ground on which the action between General Greene and Lord Cornwallis commenced, and after dinner rode over that where their lines were formed and the score closed in the retreat of the American forces. The first line of which was advantageously drawn up and had the troops done their duty properly the British must have been sorely galded (sic) in ye advance, if not defeated. The land between Salem and Guilford are in places very fine but upon the whole cannot be called more than middling, some very bad. On my approach to this place (Guilford) I was met by a party of light horse which I prevailed on the Governor to dismiss and to countermand his orders for others to attend me through the State."
