NEW MEMBERS

Dennis (DennisGill) joined our group last week and we welcome  another
Albemarle Co Moore. 
*******The following is what little bit I know about my Moore line. My 5th
gr-gr.-grandmother was Mary Moore, born about 1740, married about 1752 to
George Gillespie (Glaspy/Gillaspie/Gillispie), probably in Albemarle County,
Virginia. Her father may have been William Moore, who appears as a witness
with George Gillespie on an Albemarle deed.  George Gillespie and Mary had 12
children, two of whom were given Moore as a middle name:

I live in Greenbrae, California which is just north of San Francisco in Marin
County.  I am 45, married to Kate Gillespie, with 9 year old daughter Meghan.
 I am an airport planner for a living.  In fact, while living in New York
City a few years ago I managed the design for the new airline terminal
expansion now under construction at Dulles International Airport outside
Washington DC, in your neck of the woods. I have been interested in genealogy
for about 10 years.  This is as far back as I have been able to get, George
Gillespie and Mary Moore.  I Look forward with great anticipation to hearing
from others who may be able to help me make this connection.

[Note from Joyce:  I'm familiar with the expansion going on at Dulles - it's
only a few miles away and it is going to be magnificent!  If you fly into the
metro area, avoid National. It may be closer to Washington, but the seemingly
never-ending construction in that constrained area causes all kinds of
headaches.]

Welcome to Terry (Terryros) whose bio follows. Sounds like she has done a lot
of work getting her big family under one umbrella!  I can't figure out how
she finds time to play golf.
***Obviously I made a typo on William MOORE.  He died in 1671, not born. I
doubt that he came on the  Mayflower, since it looks as though the
MOORES/MORES that came over then seem to have been servants.  Since his
daughter married Henry Roby, I think he must have been pretty well off.  

As to a bio on me, I am 63 have been doing genealogy for about three years
and am continuing the family tree started by my great-grandfather in 1932,
continued by his daughter and son-in-law, and stored for about 20 years. Am
also doing the trees of my Mother's family, my first husband's family, second
husband's family and his first wife's family. Have about 10000 names in my
files on these families. I have three children, three step-children, 4
grandchildren, 6 step-grandchilren, and a 91 year old mother. Golf and
genealogy are my major hobbies, and I live in Texas, though I am Yankee born.

***I am Paul V. Moore, age 79, b in Niagara Falls, NY. I am  married to one
wife for over 49 years. We are currently living in Lexington, KY. Other than
the 42 months spent in the army in WWII, I have spent most of my life in NY,
NJ and PA. I was in accounting and finance work with three different
for-profit companies before switching to finance and administrative work with
a not-for-profit for the last half of my career. I retired in 1983. We have
three daughters who livi in OH, VA and PA. We moved here in 1987 to be closer
to two grandsons with our eldest daughter.  We have two other daughters; one
in VA and one in PA; and now another 5 year old grandson in VA. 

I have a lot of MOORES going back to a John Moore in Devonshire, England and
son, James, who came with his wife, Ann Wade, and six children to Darlington
Township, Durham County, Ontario, Canada in 1835.  My records have been
inherited from a cousin of my dad's  supplemented by considerable work over
the last five years by myself using independent research  correspondence,
 Elderhostels, and SeniorNet classes.  I am interested in many other family
lines besides Moores. I use notebooks and Family Tree Maker. I will submit
specific Moore data soon.   

QUERIES

Lois (Calmoore) sent the below query/suggestion about the Revolutionary War
Pension series. I don't know of a Home Page which uses this kind of
information.  Do any of you?
*** I wonder if you could post this Revolutionary pension info on to a home
page somehow. It certainly is a valuable resource and so much effort. It
should have a wider audience, in my humble opinion!

Paul (PaulPhipps) is still trying hard to find Aquilla Moore. No clues
anyone? Does anyone know where there was a Holt family living near a Moore
family in the early 1800s?  Also, Dennis, one of today's new members, has a
Bowling/Bolling marriage as does Paul. Does anyone know where there was a
Bowling/Bolling family living near a Moore family?
****My Aquilla Moore b. 1809, and even if I knew his father's name, he
wouldn't be old enough to have been in the Rev. War. However, I just realized
I haven't sent you a Query on Aquilla, so here it is:  Seeking parents of
Aquilla Moore, b. 1809 in VA?, m. Catherine Holt, b. 1811.  There were 10
children, the oldest Robert P. Moore, b 1833.

Judy (JudyAlley) submitted information issued under RESEARCH heading from the
Cumberland Settlements of TN.  She wants to know what the Cumberland Pact
was?

Bob Moore (Patwarnes), our best ancestor blood hound needs our help. He's
been a stalwart seeker for all of us.  So we own him one.
****I need some help in Eastern Tenn and Western NC (most likely). I need to
find the parents of my gg grandfather and grandmother.  James Marion Moore,
b. 13 May 1811, NC, marr. Rachel W. Patton, abt 1829/30 in Tenn.  Rachel's
Parents are John Patton, b. abt 1790, TN, and Sarah (unknown), b. abt 1790,
TN.  Rachel was born abt 1814, TN.

James Marion's family moved from NC to Tenn abt 1816/17.  This is the only
thing I know abt them.  There were two older children, John Patton, and
William A. Moore, both born in Tenn.  John (my great grandfather) was born 16
Aug 1834, Tenn., and William was born abt 1836.  The family were in Missouri
in 1842 because George W. Moore was born in Marionville, MO.

Can anyone help?

*****Please Help Me Find ELIAS!! I can't connect with any of the names
mentioned.  I am a direct descendant of Elias Moore, but have almost no info
on him.  Here's what I know from Family Bible, a listing my grandmother wrote
up, and a few Census records:
Elias Moor and Permilia Stephens were married in Washington Co. IL
(probably), on January 29, 1834 (Family Bible). Permilia (b. July 6, 1818)
would have been 15 and a half.  They had two daughters, Sarah E. Moore--Mar
14 1836; and Mary W. Moore--Dec 12 1839 (Family Bible). Permilia is shown in
1850 census of Washington Co. IL as wife of Joseph Wells, with daughters
Sarah and Mary Moore (ages 13 and 11), so Elias  died between 1839 and 1850;
possibly in Mexican War.  As far as I can tell, he had only those two
chlidren (at least with Permilia).  Somebody out there MUST have something on
Elias!!


Ken (Kenne34086) is looking for a West Virginia Moore family.  Hope he finds
some help.
****I am a descendent of Hannah Christine Moore who married Shelton Ball in
Harrison County, VA/WVA in 1847.  I don't know where they came from but I do
know they had a daughter, Mary Cordelia Ball, born in Harrison County in
1855.  Mary Cordelia married Martin VanBuren Tate in Ritchie County, VA/WVA
and they later lived there.  I would like to participate in your study in
order to find Hannah Christine Moore.

Response from Joyce (JBrown7169) to Gail (GHedden736):   Gail's query and
Bob's response introduced her to a whole new world full of kin folk,
including CAPT C, Merle Moore, me, mayby Judy Alley and Harry Silcox, and
probably others who don't even know it yet.  The strength of the Moore group
coming out of the Patrick Co VA/Stokes Co NC area was incredible,
particularly in the large number of male children.  Also, I believe the
attribution in Bob's response to Gail of Samuel Dalton Moore's birth in
Maryland is an error on the part of the original researcher. This Moore
family was continuously in Albemarle Co from 1746 until Matthew Moore moved
to NC around 1770.

****I heard from Dennis Gill. Talk about a small world, 2 of my kids
graduated from the same high school as Dennis. However, they are a few years
older than him.  His wife lived in the same area as my family did. I haven't
talked with my younger daughter as yet, but wouldn't be surprised if she
knows his wife. Now find out who their parents are, and I might know them.  I
was also able to find Dennis' Bowling family. 

RESEARCH

Bob (Patwarnes) provides the following history of the Moore name from ROOTS
RESEARCH BUREAU, Ltd., Copyright 1984. 
****The name of Moore or More is believed to have been derived from the
residence of its first bearers at a moor or heath. It appears in ancient
records in the various spellings of Mor, Moor, Mower, Moir, Mooar, Mooer,
Mooers, Mores, Moors, Moores, O'More, More, and Moore, of which the last is
the form most generally found in America today, while the form immediately
preceding it is also occasionally encountered.

Among the earliest records of the name in Great Britain are those of Thomas
de Mora or More of 1066, Sir Henry de la More of Scotland in the early
thirteenth century, John atte Mor of County Norfolk in 1273, Adam atte More
of Oxfordshire about the same time, Fulco de la More of Huntingdonshire abt
1280, Pontius de la More of Yorkshire abt the same time, Richard de la More
of Gloucestershire in 1290, Sit Thomas de la Moore of Oxfordshire in 1327,
Sir Thomas de las More of Porchester Castle in 1370, Johannes atte Moore of
1379 and Sir Adam More of Scotland in 1391.

Probably the first of the names in America were Richard and Jasper Moore, who
in 1620 came in the Mayflower to Plymouth, Mass. The first of these brothers
is believed to have had six children, but their names are not known. The
second brother died soon after reaching America and left no issue.

COLONIAL MOORES 

Below are the opening three paragraphs of a new best seller, "Undaunted
Courage - Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American
West."  By Stephen E. Ambrose. 1996.  

This is an exceptionally well written, thoroughly researched, informative
biography and account of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Ken Burns of PBS'
Civil War series says of Mr. Ambrose's book:  "Stephen Ambrose is that rare
breed:  a historian with true passion for his subject. Here he takes on of
the great, but also one of the most superficially considered, stories in
American history and breathes fresh life into it.  Lewis comes alive as we've
never known him."  This book is history, but it reads as easily as a novel
and does not smother the reader with minutae unless it enhances the story. 

Four Moore families, who did not share an obvious familial bond, lived in the
valley between Albemarle County's Little Mountains and the Blue Ridge where
Meriwether Lewis was born. It was, perhaps, the microcenter of America's
westward movement. The families in this valley were:  Jefferson, Henry,
Lewis, Clark, Meriwether, and Walker, all of whom in some manner led the way
west.

"From the west-facing window of the room in which Meriwether Lewis was born
on August 18, 1774, one could look out at Rockfish Gap, in the Blue Ridge
Mountains, an opening to the West that invited exploration. The Virginia
Piedmont of 1774 was not the frontier - that had extended beyond the
Allegheny chain of mountains, and a cultured plantation life was nearly a
generation old -- but it wasn't far removed. Traces of the old buffalo trail
that led up Rockfish River to the Gap still remained. Deer were exceedingly
plentiful, black bear common. An exterminating war was being waged agains
wolves.  Beaver were on every stream. Flocks of turkeys thronged the woods.
In the fall and spring, ducks and geese darkened the rivers.

"Lewis was born in a place where the West invited exploration but the East
could prvide ecucation and knowledge, where the hunting was magnificent but
plantation society provided refinement and enlightenment, where he could
learn wilderness skills while sharpening his wits about such matters as
surveying, politics, natural history, and geography.

"The West was very much on Virgininans' minds in 1774, even though the big
news that year was the Boston Tea Party, the introduction of resolutions in
the House of Burgesses in support of Massachusetts, the dissolution of the
Burgesses by the Royal Governor Lord Dunmore, and a subsequent meeting at
Raleigh Tavern of the dissolved Burgesses, whose Committee of Correspondence
sent out letters calling for a general congress of the American colonies.  In
September, the First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia, and revolution
was under way."

peirced through three gory heads all ppr.  Motto: Conlan-a-bu

Lioseach Lanmor, brother Irial Glunmhar, who is No 69 on the "Guiness"
pedigree, was the ancestor of "OMaoilmordha; anglicised O'Mulore, O'Morra,
O'Moore, Moore, Moher, and Mordie

116.  Col. Roger, son of Charles d 1646. This Col Roger O'Moore was the "Rory
O'Moore" of popular tradition in Ireland; to whose courage and resources was
in a great measure, due to the formidable Irish Insurrection of AD 1641. That
Insurrection (see Section 12 of Paper: "New Divisions of Ireland, and the New
Settlers," in the Appendix) was ostensibly the cause of the Cromwellian
settlement of Ireland; and it is remarkable that this Roger O'Moore was a
descendant of one of the Chieftains of Leix, who, a century before, had been
massacred by English troops at Mullaghmast. Of him Sir Charles Gavan Duffy,
in his "Ballad Poetry of Ireland" writes:  "Then a private gentleman, with no
resources beyond his intellect and his courage, this Rory, when Ireland was
weakened by defeat and confiscation, and guarded with a jealous care
constantly increasing in strictness and severity, conceived the vast design
of rescuing  the country from England, and even accomplished it; for, in
three years, England did not retain a city in Ireland but Dublin and
Drogheda; and for eight years the land was possessed and the supreme
authority exercised by the Confederation created by O'Moore. History contains
no stricter instance of the influence of an indiviual mind."  Before the
Insurrection broke out, the people, driven to desperation by the cruelties
and inflicted on them by the Authorities in Ireland, had learned to know
Roger O'Moore, and to expect in him their deliverer; and it became a popular
proverb of the burthen of national songs, that the hope of Ireland's
regeneration, at that time, was in "God, the Virgin and Rory O'Moore."

The following are a few stanzas of an Ulster Balad of that period, preserved
in Duffy's "Ballad Poetry of Ireland":

On the green hills of Ulster the white cross waves high,
And the beacon of war throws its flames to the sky;
Now the taunt and the threat let the coward endure,
Our hope is in God and in Rory O'Moore!

Do you ask why the beacon and banner of war
On the mountains of Ulster are seen from afar?
'Tis the signal our rights to regain and secure,
Through God and our Lady and Rory O'Moore!
