MOORE NEWS Volume I August 7, 1996 Issue 13 SALUTATIONS Sharing a victory is satisfying, and here's one we should all share: Leslie Moore (LMoore6376) writes the following: In searching for Moores I keep hitting brick walls; but Tuesday I took a day of vacation and went to Weakly County, Tennessee to search for information on my great, great grandfather, Silas Moore. During about 5 hours in the library at Dresden, I discovered his first wife's name, lists and lists of Moores, and the location of the Moore Cemetery near Palmersville which listed his and my gggrandmother's stone as being the only ones. I meekly asked the librarian if she knew if the Moore cemetery was still in existence since the book listing it was dated 1972. She directed me to the Postmistress at Palmersville who would "love to be of assistance to me." I drove to Palmersville and when I asked the Postmistress, she immediately called two ladies who were Moores before they married. We spoke on the phone for a few minutes and then they gave me directions to another lady who was only 1/2 mile away. When I told her who I was she immediately invited me in, and started pulling out pictures of my great, great grandfather and telling me stories about him and the descendants. She was descended from Silas and his first wife, Matilda Kennedy. I am descended from Silas and his second wife, Sophronia H. Lamb. Silas was one of the first settlers in that area and was the first school teacher in Henry County, Tennessee. The Moore School was still standing when this lady, Ruth Alden, went to school as a child. She told me many things about the family. I plan on returning to meet her sister and her first cousin who have all the information arranged in "proper genealogical order." I didn't think I would ever find anything on the Moores, so I was unbelievably happy and wanted to share it with another "rooter." NEW MEMBERS JoAnne Moore (JO4CATS) sends this information about herself and her family and we welcome another Illinois Moore family to our clan. *****I live at 5713 Spring Creek Way, Elk Grove, California 95758 (916)684-9357 and my e-mail address is Jo4cats@aol.com or JMoore@ns.net. I am an automobile bodily injury claims adjuster for USAA. I am divorced and have two children ages 20 and 21. I have an empty nest with the exception of 3 dogs and 9 cats. I have been working on my family genealogy for about 6 months. I started with the Family Tree Maker program but have switched to Family Gatherings by Palladium. I was born in Waukegan Illinois and resided in Lake Zurich Illinois until approximately age 4 when my family moved to Nebraska and then California. My Moore line comes from my father and I am interested in carrying the line back as far as possible. The oldest accurate information I have is for my Great Grandfather, Albert Porter Moore, born in Georgetown Illinois on November 19, 1860, married Amanda Bessie Selby March 8, 1882 and died February 17, 1946 in Elgin, Illinois. I found Albert in the 1870 census for Vermilion County, Georgetown, Illinois at age 9 living with a Lizzie Blanchard (my first husband's last name was Blanchard, small world) and next door lived Mary Moore age 29 shown as a servant. I am guessing that Lizzie was related to Mary and possibly Mary's son was living with Lizzie. The 1880 census for the same area revealed that Albert, now age 19, was living with his Grandmother, Anna Moore, age 77. Albert had three children: (1) Robert Fred Moore born February 16, 1886 and I believe my father told me he moved to Kentucky and his death date and family info in Kentucky is unknown. (2) Oral Guy Moore born January 2, 1888 in Moultrie County, Illinois and died June 15, 1962 in the V.A. Research Hosp in Chicago, Illinois. Was buried in Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin, Illinois. Oral was never married and had no children. Oral had his own costume factory and made costumes for the ice follies. I have several of his letters and last will and testament. (3) Harry Milton Moore (my grandfather) born May 10, 1883 in Lovington, Illinois, died January 27, 1957 in Elgin, Illinois and is buried at Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin, Illinois. Harry married Edna Bell on an unknown date in an unknown location. Harry had one child, my father, James Selby Moore and adopted Edna's child, Naomi Lemvig. I have a military document on Carrol Moore showing he enlisted August 13, 1862 at Georgetown Illinois as a corporal in company D, 125th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. It shows he was killed July 19, 1864 at Atlanta Georgia. This record was requested my Harry Milton Moore but I do not know his relationship to my family. I think it is probable that he is the husband of Mary Moore and father of Albert Moore. Family gossip is that Carrol was shot while trying to steal a pig. Poor Carrol if this gossip is untrue and he will be tagged with it for generations to come. - - - - - *****My name is William (Bill) Moose (Da Moos) and though I am not a Moore, my wife is and I have been studying her line for her family and my kids. The furthest back I have gone is one James Washington Moore. James Washington Moore mar. Charlotte Temple Elmore. Presently I know of only the one son: Reuben Menifee Moore b. 11-12-1841, Crab Orchard, Laurel, KY mar. Sabra Beckstead in Hamburg, Fremont, IA 1-5-1870. These two and their 4 children traveled with the Mormons to Gresham NE and settled down to homestead. Their children are Mina Bell Moore 5-28-1871 to 4-2-1952; Odie Moore 1873-1877; James Simon Moore 9-5-1875 to 5-14-1922; and Jose Edna Moore 1878 to 2-12-1958. My wife is a granddaughter of James Simon Moore. There are still a number of Moores living around the old homestead site in Gresham and raising of course CORN. One of these Moores is the Secretary of State of Nebraska, Scott Moore, son of son of Dale Moore, son of Keith Moore, son of the James Simon Moore mentioned above. We had a descendants of Reuben and Sabra reunion on the family farm last 4th of July and it was a big hit. It was great to see everyone and swap stories. Especially the ones about our parents when they were kids. If anyone can give some help on the ancestors of James Washington Moore mentioned above I would sure appreciate it. Thanks all and happing hunting. QUERIES Bob Moore (Patwarnes), our sleuth has come up with a response to a much earlier Query. *****Someone was looking for a James M. Moore in Arkansas. I found the marriage of James M. Moore and Lizzie J. Browning on 22 Dec 1895 in Sebastian Co., Arkansas. Elsie (ELSAEARL), a new member, has a query. *****I have marriage bond for James Moore and Jenny Leffew in 1849. Children: Ann, John, Cynthia Richard, Susan, James, George, Sarah, Harriett, Robert, Tazewell, Harvey, David and Edward. Tazewell was my g-grandfather. Maybe he will show up since his name is a little more unusual (but not much). He married my g-grandmother, Sarah Louise Spangler on Dec. 22, 1880 in Montgomery County. My Moore line was in Franklin County, Virginia, also Montgomery County, Virginia - - - - - - Leslie (LMoore6376), having discovered her connection to Silas Moore now has her next question: *****Silas Moore, 27 Oct 1809 - 11 Feb 1897, of TN, was the son of Johnny Moore and Abigail Smith (won't those names be easy to find!!!:) Johnny was the son of Shazran Moore. Does anyone have any information on Shazran Moore or a similar spelling? I have no idea of where he was born. I am searching for Shazran since there are so many Johnny's I don't feel I could possibly locate him. - - - - - Lisa (Llllmm), another new member, has a query about a recent Moore. Maybe someone can help her find Colleen, b. 1922. ****Colleen Elizabeth Moore is my husbands mother. She passed away when he was 2 yrs. old (01 Dec. 1964). He comes from a very large family, yet no one seems to know anything. Here's what I know: She was supposed to have been born in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, IN on 24 Dec. 1922. Per some family members (unconfirmed), her Dad owned a farm there that had a covered bridge. Another family member said her Dad was a railroad engineer, so who knows? Her Dad's name was either James Moore or Paul Moore. (Whatever Dad's name is, the other name was a 1/2 brother) Paul Moore is listed on her death cert., with mother's name listed as unknown. Mother's name on one document is Ruth Stumm. The story goes that her parents disowned her because she was pregnant. Yet if she was pregnant she did not have this baby (miscarriage, abortion or adoption?) She left IN and traveled to Indiantown Gap, PA. where she meet her future husband (my husband's father) after he got out of the service. They traveled to WV (where his family was from) and got married. His name was Allen Drexal Minor. They had 9 children (1 of which is my husband). They moved and resided in Pittsburgh, PA, and both died in Pittsburgh. I wrote to IN for her birth cert. but they said they had nothing on file. I wrote the hospital in PA where she was a patient numerous times and they never responded. I really don't know where to go from here. I have been looking for 12 years on and off. I have all the info. from Allen Drexal Minor side of family & all their children together but nothing on her side. I believe she was Irish. As far a Roman Catholic, that is also a possiblilty. It has been mentioned that she had a strict Catholic upbringing. It has been my dream to find out something not only for my husband, but I would love to be able to pass everything on to my daughters. RESPONSES TO QUERIES Dell (AMoore2309) is another new member. You can't beat her record for providing an instant response. She only became a participant this week. She is responding to Harry Silcox (H Silcox) who only last week wondered about Moores in Mt. Tizah, NC. This Moore family has both northern and southern links. You would never guess that someone from NYC, the metropolis of the world, would end up in Mt. Tizah, NC. This family was everywhere! *****I came across a Bible entry while in Montgomery Alabama. Jones BIOGRAPHY Source: "Newsletter of the Descendants of John Moore," published by William Alvin Moore. January and April 1996 *****"Genealogy of William Alfred Moore of Mt. Airy, North Carolina," by Richard Kesler of Pinehurst, NC. The parents of William Alfred Moore's father, Samuel Dalton Moore (12 May 1804 - 17 May 1865), were William Moore, born 7 Oct. 1771 in Pittsylvania (now Patrick) Co VA, died 31 May 1819 in Patrick Co, and Jane Hanby, born 28 Feb. 1783 in Henry (now Patrick) Co., VA. Jane Hanby was daughter of Jonathan Hanby, born 9 Dec. 1741 in Salem Co NJ, died 26 Mar 1817 in Patrick Co VA, and Sarah Matilda Dalton, born 12 Mar 1754 probably in Louisa (now Albemarle) Co VA, died 17 Sep 1841 in Patrick Co VA, daughter of Samuel Dalton, Sr. William Alfred's grandfather, William Moore, was son of Rodham Moore, born 1744 probably in VA, died 4 June 1811 in Surry Co., NC or Patrick Co VA. Rodham Moore is buried in the old Moore family graveyard beside his son William and William's wife, Jane (Hanby) Moore on the Ararat River some four or five miles north of the Virginia/North Carolina state line and a couple of miles north of the J.E.B. Stuart birthplace. Gallahue Moore, who was born c. 1787 in Henry (now Patrick) Co VA and died 11 Sept. 1854 in Dade Co., MO, was another son of Rodham Moore by his wife, Elizabeth Gallahue, born c 1754 in Prince William Co, VA, died 2 Oct 1825 in Hawkins Co, TN. See Hawkins Co will of Elizabeth (Gallahue) Moore dated 28 Feb 1825 in which she names her children: Hugh G., Galahu, Cleon, Uil (Ewell), John, Elizabeth, and Salley. The earliest record found of Rodham Moore is in a 1770 Pittsylvania Co, VA tax list. He probably was living then and subsequently in that part of Pittsylvania Co VA that became Henry Co in 1776/7 and Patrick Co in 1790/1. He moved over the VA/NC state line into Surry Co, NC around 1796, where he may have been living when he died. The wife of William Alfred Moore was Rachel Martin Moore (20 May 1839 - 30 Nov 1882). She was daughter of Matthew Chiles Moore (24 Nov 1811 - bef. 1850) and Mary Ann McHenry. She was granddaughter of William Moore (20 Feb 1775 - 5 Aug. 1867) and Mary ("Polly") Martin (28 Oct. 1780 - 18 June 1839): and she was great granddaughter of Matthew Moore and Letitia Dalton. The following excerpts were found in "A Glance at the Past, " compiled and Edited by Katharine Byrd Miller, 1978. "London Magazine" published in 1743: All over the colony hospitality reins, full tables and open doors. Thomas Jefferson's overseer wrote of life at Monticello -- 'They were there all times of the year; but about the middle of June the travel would commence from the lower part of the state to the springs, and then there was a perfect throng of visitors. They traveled in their own carriages and came in gangs, the whole family with carriage and riding horses and servants, sometimes 3 or 4 such gangs at a time. We had 36 stalls for horses and only used 10 of them for stock we kept there. Very often all the rest were full and I had to move our horses off to another place. I have often sent a wagon load of hay up to the stable, and the next morning there would not be enough left to make a bird's nest. I have killed a fine beef, and it would all be eaten up in a day or two. "Virginia Gazette", October 2, 1770: Whereas my husband, William Paul, has thought fit to publish an advertisement forewarning all persons from trusting me on his account, and not to harbour me, I think it necessary to acquaint the public that we parted some time ago by mutual consent, upon his delivering to me a part of his personal estate. I at the same time, at his request, giving him two sufficient and undeniable securities that I would not run him into debt. If I have acted to the contrary since our separation, which he knows to be otherwise, he can have his remedy against my securities; and as to doing it before that period, of which he accuses me, the falsity of it will appear from the following certificate, dated Sept. 28, 1770: "We the subscribers, merchants in Fredericksburg, do hereby certify that Fanny Paul, tailor, hath not contracted with us, any debts on her said husband's account. Signed by William Porter, Neil McConel, Hinry Mitchell, William Reid, George Mitchell, James Robb, John Mitchell, James Maury, Hesop & Blair." Neither am I concealed but appear as usual; and I am resolved to recover what is legaly due from William." "Virginia Gazette," August 11, 1738: Order to all peers, Peeresses and Privy Counsellors for the Court's going into second mourning on May 21; that ladies wear black silk, fringed or plain linen or muslin, white gloves, black and white shoes, fans and tippets, white necklaces and earrings, no diamonds, underdresses -- white or grey lusterstring, damasks or tabies. The men to wear black full trimmed or fringed linen, black swords and buckles, underdress, grey frocks. The coaches of the Nobility, etc. are to have their arms, crest and supporters painted in their proper colors on black coaches." "Virginia Gazette," November 24, 1738: This day Anthony Francis Ditton, who received sentence of death at the last General Court for the murder of Mr. Evans, the Coach-maker, as formerly mentioned, was executed at the usual place near the city. He was a lusty man and after he had been turned off about two or three minutes, the executioner bore him out of his pain the sooner. In doing which the rope broke, and the man fell down senseless, but in a short space of time, he recovered his senses, sat up and talked again, begging the minister and the spectators, heartily to pray for him. Then he got in the cart again himself and was hanged til he was dead. His corpse was put into a coffin and hear it is to annatomized by the surgeons. __________________________________________________ MOORE NEWS: Compiled from email and other sources Distributed by Joyce Browning cJBrown7159@AOL.com 7 August 1996
