MOORE NEWS Volume I August 30, 1996 Issue 17 SALUTATIONS We Moores are so fortunate to bind together with the wonderful gift of sharing our family information with each other. This information comes to us virtually without cost and was intended from the beginning to be a sharing proposition. Thanks so much for making this as successful as it has been. Please consider sharing a printed copy or disk copy with other researchers who are not partipating. And speaking of sharing, we have been so sharing that we need an extra edition. Extra distributions mean that we circulate information as quickly as possible because who knows which one of us may find what he or she has been searching for embedded in the context of someone else's research. - - - - - - This is an important medical announcement from our friend and Mentor, Merle Moore. He called to let us know that he now has visual problems caused by years at a computer because he didn't use an anti-radiation and anti-glare screen on his monitor. Screens are available in almost all monitor sizes and range in price from about $28 to $45, depending on size. Monitor screens can be purchased from a number of vendors. One Merle knows of is MEI Microsystems @ 1-800-634-3478. Merle advises that we run, don't walk, to obtain this protection. - - - - - - Responding to the comments about MOORE NEWS is the last issue, Joy (JO4CATS) sends an interesting web site for joining surname mailing lists. Box 1905 Bowling Green, KY 42101 NEW MEMBERS Pamela (SUNKST 7) brings us another northestern family - her ancestor liked it so well, he stayed after serving with the British during the Revolution. *****Thank you for including me. I'm afraid I do not have much to offer as the Moore line is a dead-end for me. I hope that someone will recognize my possible ancestor and open some new lines for me. My name is Pamela Hendricksen. In researching my 5 great-grandfather, Lt. Col. Edward Hicks of the 70th Regiment of the British Army in America during the American Revolution, I learned that Lt. Col. Edward Hicks' parents were Edward Hicks and Violetta Ricketts both of New York. Lt. Col. Edward Hicks' sister Mary married Bishop Samuel Seabury at St. George's, Nassau, Hempstead, NY. In looking through New York records, I found an Edward Hicks b. 1717 in Hempstead, Nassau, NY the son of ******Elizabeth Moore**** and Isaac Hicks. Given the dates and location, I felt fairly certain that Elizabeth Moore and Isaac Hicks were the parents of my Edward Hicks who married Violetta Ricketts....but I have no solid proof. Does anyone know of an Elizabeth Moore who married Isaac Hicks possibly in 1700 in Nassau, Hempstead, Queens, New York?? Arville L. I have just started researching the Moore side of my family. I have been concentrating on my mother's line. I am still relatively new at this. I know that my gggrandparents were Julius Ira Moore and Leanna Capps Moore. I think they lived in Pinder County, North Carolina. Their son, Robert Elizabeth Civy Moore married Mary Ellen Moore. (She was a Moore before marriage.) Robert and Mary Ellen had 10 children: David Paul, my grandfather, Charlie R., Lena, Garrow, Harvey, Connie, Erla, Robert, Lucien A., and Ila(?). David Paul Moore married Viola Jane Williams. They moved to Duplin County, North Carolina. They had four children: Adron Durant, my father, Ellen, Jaqueline, and David Paul, Jr. I am unsure of any dates as my grandfather lied abvout his age so that he could enlist in the army for WWI. We think we may also have ties to a George Durant of England on Viola Williams's side, but have not been able to find the documentation. i am very anxious to find out more about either of these families. QUERIES New member M223943 is looking for what could be a needle in a haystack. Those looking for John Moore and Mary Moore really have their work cut out for them. *****I'm looking for the parents and other ancestors of Mary Moore. She was married to John Byrd and they lived in Mt. Vernon, Posey Co., IN when their son Willis Byrd was born on 22 NOV 1857, he died 24 DEC 1903. My guess is she would have been born between 1830 and 1839, maybe a little earlier. - - - - - - Pamela (SUNKST 7)I was just sent something from another person researching the Hicks line. She states that Isaac Hicks married Elizabeth Moore, daughter of Capt. Samuel Moore and Mary Reed. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks! - - - - - Tom McCammon (Poose) I'm looking for Mr./Mrs. John Lee Duncan (wife Loolla Kantuer), this family's branch's genealogist.) Both the Duncan family and Virginia (nee Lee) Duncan where related to the MOORE family as follows. I went into the hospital to recover from a stroke in 1992. 2-3 years later when I got back to my computer both families had moved from Reading, PA. And the postal forwarding had run out and I do not know where they are. Connection: John L. Duncan is the son of Virginia LEE daughter of Bessie MOORE and John Lee. Bessie's father was William Henry MOORE the son of John Sherman (Sherry) MOORE, Ripley Ohio, my familyis PROGENITOR. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. RESPONSES TO QUERIES Sue ( SueSkay) has answered her own Query. While we celebrate her breakthrough, she may have information that will help someone else. ***** We finally had a breakthrough on our Moore line in Lamar TX. My sister-in-law found a 1979 issue of the Moore Quarterly. A woman had listed a query about our Daniel Moore and family. We located her husband in Waller Texas, it turns out his wife had passed away about 5 years ago, but he had all her research notes. A Moore research "cousin" of ours who lives in Houston had lunch with him a few days later and got all the research from him. What a find! She had taken the family back two more generations and gave us leads to some of the suspected family connections. Here is a breakdown of what I have now. This family was originally outlined in the first issue of the newsletter, this one however includes some new info. Note: We also find a Harding Moore who died in Montgomery Co., TN ca 1818, and a Hardy Moore also shows up in Lamar TX somehow connected to our Moore's. Would appreciate hearing from anyone that can add anything to this family. John Warham's church. Warham was born in Devonshire, England in 1592. I would surmise (maybe) they would be from same area. Elder Strong was also part of this group. They all came over on the Mary and John in 1630. Strong also was born in Devon, most of the group appears to be from Dorset or Devon. Yes, it is Conn. This party founded Dorchester, Conn. Then founded Windsor. Most of this info. is attributed to "Early Records and Documents of Windsor Hartford Historical Society" Stiles Hist.Ancient Wethersfield. Unfortunately I was not able to talk much with the gentlemen who compiled a good portion of this. He was in poor health when I located his work, elderly etc., he was a librarian and makes a statement that his charts are proven and lists proof etc. He was a special man and I regret I didn't discover genealogy sooner. Anyone with any connection to our group who has researched the 1850 period should immediately click with any of the following, King Strang, Beaver Island, Michigan. My particular ancestor left New York to found The Northwest Trading Post on Beaver Island. A pominent family of merchants (we went back to New York a few years ago for the dedication and placing of historical marker on Moore's hotel) he worked in New York for the Trading Co., then went to establish the new post. His life after that, shortly,"went to hell in a handbasket" and that is where it became incredibly interesting for all of us researchers. So much is written and it is so poignant. We'll see if anyone has any connections. RESEARCH LaVerne (Mar523) can identify one early Mary Moore - she was from Pr. Georges Co MD - a county we haven't heard much from. Note LaVerne's inquiry about Dr. James Moore, Jr. in the second paragraph. If anyone is corresponding with Dr. Moore and can send his address, I'll be happy to write him to see if he's interested in contributing. *****This line is also mine through daughter Mary Moore who m. John Summers whose descendants ended up in KY, W. VA, NC and TN - possibly other places, but these are the only ones I've traced so far. Some of the research on this line was done by others and info provided to me - there is a Dr. James Moore Jr. of Rockville MD who I understand is doing extensive research on this Prince Georges Co. MD line - though I haven't had direct contact with him nor do I have his address. I haven't seen the actual deeds of gift made by James Sr. in 1835, but am told that in them he stated his age was 110 years!! He also seems to have had two "sets" of children which indicate he was fathering children from 1646 to the 1690's by at least two wives. James Moore had wife, Elizabeth, named in 1686 deed... by 1697, wife's name was Mary.... I have references to several of the documents which establish some of the older children (James Jr. & Ruth Moore who were b. 1746-1750 or so - also John Moore was probably in this same age group) The sons Benjamin, George & Peter were named as sons in 1735 deeds of gift - also a grandson James Hoskinson who is "said to be" son of Jane Moore/Thomas Hoskinson. James/Elizabeth James Moore Jr. b. 1646 per deposition 1708 listing his age as 62 Ruth Moore b @ 1650 m. Ninian Beall John Moore m. Mary - deceased by 1697 Jane Moore m. Thomas Hoskinson MARY MOORE b @ 1690/95 m. John Summers George Moore Benjamin Moore Peter Moore Deeds of gift 1735 named grandson James Hoskinson; sons Benjamin, George & Peter -- probably sons of his last marriage. I remember seeing references in the newsletter to a "missing" Peter Moore.... though I haven't gone back through the newsletters to see if this MD Peter could fit the research and be the "missing link"... If it turns out that he is the right Peter - or his line at least -- I'll gladly accept my 20 lashes for holding out on you!! - - - - - - - - Source of the following cemetary records is "They Came to Kentucky, Chiefly Pertaining to Boone, Pulaski, Lincoln, Gallatin, and Casey Counties."
