MOORE NEWS Volume I September 18, 1996 Issue 20 SALUTATIONS MOORE NEWS SCOOPS NBC . . . Just wanted to crow a little . . . A week AFTER you received notice and information in MOORE NEWS about the new discoveries at Jamestown, NBC's Tom Brokaw also covered this hot news item on the Evening News. - - - - - - A THANK YOU . . . . This has nothing to do with the Moore family, but in your last print out mentioned Hurricane Fran. As you have seen on the TV we were hit awfully hard here in Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Fort Fisher Historical site. We had linemen come in from eighteen states to try to restore power to our homes. The men from Georgia left this morning. I just wanted to put the word out that we are so appreciative of these people taking time from their families to come to North Carolina to help us get our lives back. It was a devastating storm and the second hurricane for us in two months. Words can't express how much we appreciate these men who came in a convoy to the Wilmington area. God Bless you all! Ruby Elrod - Wilmington, North Carolina - - - - - - A GENEROUS GIFT AND FABULOUS OPPORTUNITY FOR US MOORES. THANK YOU SO MUCH, DIANA. DIANA (genbug@sedona.net) -- Anyone who would like to include their MOORE line in a data base can do so by submitting a GEDCOM (on MOORE names only) to me (see address below). These will be added to the names that I have been extracting from the MOORE/NEWS. I will notify you if I find any matching info just in case you didn't catch the posting in the MOORE/NEWS. I have only included the names from the MOORE/NEWS "histories" and "biographies" and listed which issue they are found in. I can then do a search on a name or place, then go to that issue for further info. This will be more of an index until the names become linked together. Researchers, please post your queries to the MOORE/NEWS and I will pick it up from there. That way more people will see it, we all will benefit and I won't be flooded with queries at this stage of the game. I will be using the PAF program because it takes GEDCOMs and does match/merge names. I have trouble receiving GEDCOMs by E-mail! Therefore, I would prefer to receive GEDCOMs by SNAILMAIL TO DIANA L. SMITHSON P. O. BOX 2482 COTTONWOOD, AZ 86326 -------- We're still looking for an infusion of information about the northeastern and Canadian Moore families. For instance, what happened to the little boy, Richard Moore, who survived, but lost his Mayflower family? It has been reported that he grew up in the Massachusetts Colony and had children. When the Pilgrims of Massachusetts were undergoing their trying early years, it was no accident that Virginia colonists sent boatload after boatload of corn and other produce to help them through their "starving time." Virginia ships called early on their fellow colonists in Massachusetts and knew of their needs. The memory of Virginia's "starving time" was still fresh in the minds of the southern colonists and the Massachusetts settlers were not strangers, but family and former neighbors. We have already discovered some ties between northern and southern Moores. It would be interesting to see if other Moores are of the same family either here or in Europe. We've barely touched exploration of the European Moore family. Most are still trying to establish their American family. But those who are truly stuck from an early date may need to look to Europe for origin. An incredibly strong movement was the Scotch-Irish migration from northern Ireland to the coloinies beginning in earnest about 1740. NEW MEMBERS CHRYSTAL (Chrystaltx) introduces her early KN or TN family. ****John Moore (b. 1840 d. 1865) m. Catherine Elizabeth Russell abt. 1860, in KY or Western TN. John Moore has been elusive, he died during the Civil War. I have also heard that Catherine Russell may not have been John Moore's only wife. He may have been married before Catherine. Can anyone out there provide information ? His children.... Miranda Agnes Moore b. 1862 d. 1945, m. William Henry Walker. William Alexander Moore b. 1865 d. 1925. Laura Moore. John Anselm Moore b. 1861, d. 1893, m. Sophie J. Herrs, b. 1858 d.? Miranda Agnes Moore is my gr. gr. grandmother. She married William Henry Walker. John Anselm Moore and Sophie had two daughters: Laura Moore m. W. F. Burgess; and Lillie Moore, m. C. N. Kelly - - - - - - JIM RODRIGUEZ (76275.1275@compuserve.com) is another descendant from the Moore families who resided in the central Piedmont of VA and NC, that is Stokes/Rockingham Cos NC and Patrick/Henry Cos VA. We have so many participants from this group, we should be able to pin down his family. *****I'm an engineer, here in San Antonio,TX, and a part time Navy Reservist. My retired father, Jesse Rodriguez, is the record keeper . . . I'm just the computer guy. He and I have been researching my deceased mother's Moore line going from Polk Co, TX, back to Lauderdale Co, MS and then back to Stokes Co, NC where we reach a wall. We are hopeful that someone out there can be of help, and we of course would be willing to share any of our particular info. . . I have a John Moore who married Charlotte Romell on 8 Jan 1804 in Stokes Co. Children of this marriage (maybe not all) were: Elizabeth, b Nov 1822, married Richard W Murphy, 28 May 1843 in Lauderdale Co MS; Sarah who married Daniel Stuckey, 10 Feb 1843 in Lauderdale Co.; Larkin b abt 1826; Delilah b abt 1827, who married William Chambers, 24 Dec 1843 in Lauderdale Co; Samuel W.; John C. who married Sarah Stuckey, 20 Jan 1853 in Lauderdale Co; Margaret who married James Walker, 11 Jan 1852 in Lauderdale Co; Mary E. who married John R. Cocke, 14 May 1855 in Lauderdale Co; George Arrington (my direct line) b 18 July 1845 in Lauderdale Co. who married Ann Mentoria Pinckard 18 Jul 1866 in Polk Co, TX As you can see there was a move from Stokes Co, NC to Lauderdale Co, MS to Polk Co, TX. Getting back to Stokes Co, John Moore's (widowed?) mother-in-law, Mrs. Charlotte Romell, married Solomon Turner on 5 Dec 1812 in Guilford Co, NC. I also suspect that John Moore was both the son and executor of estate of his father, Alexander Moore, whose will was probated in Stokes Co, in 1803. - - - - - - KIRK JENKINS ( kjenkin2@ix.netcom.com) probably descends from another familiar family, that of John Moore (d. 1777) of Albemarle Co. Some of his family joined a large group from central Virginia counties who migrated to Georgia in the mid to late 1700s. *****Bishop MOORE supposedly came to Georgia from the Petersburg area (or maybe Charlottesville before that) in Virginia. He was born after 1790 in Prince George Co., Virginia. He married Sarah RAY, a North Carolina native, in Wilkes County, Georgia and died in 1844 in Jones County Georgia. Bishop's children: Mary B. Moore, born 1809, married William Hudson. Lucinda Moore, born 1812, married James Sumner. Jefferson E.Moore, born c. 1814, married Martha Miller. Moore, born 1826, married William Samuel Poindexter. Joseph Hiram Moore, born c. 1827, married Elizabeth Rice. Franklin Bishop Moore, born circa 1828. Christianna C.Moore, born circa 1833, married Burwell S. Miller on 28 Dec 1848 in Jones Co., Ga. Then, there was Bishop's nephew, Ephraim Moore. Ephraim was born circa 1806. He married Marium Stalworth in Jones Co Ga on 17 Jan 1833 and died in the late 1860s. Children were: Joseph G. Moore, b. 1836; Wiley L. Moore, b. 1840; Henry T. Moore, b. 1843 and married Alcenor Juhan; Sarah W. Moore, b. 1847; Beauford Moore, b.1849; Lucinda Moore, born 1852; Levin Elam Moore, b. Dec 1854 in Jones Co Ga, married 13 Jun 1875 to Martha A. Liles, died 5 Aug 1905 in Macon; and Ann T. Moore, born 1859, married Benjamin F. Balckom on 26 Nov 1879. QUERIES PHYLLIS CARPENTER (GFFB08A@prodigy.com) is inquiring about a Caswell Co family. MOORE NEWS has just received some Caswell Co information from VERNA (VLerdall) who has done a lot of Caswell/Person Co research. Her latest Caswell Co input will appear in next week's issue. ****** Would like to know about any descendants of Robert Moore b. 13 Jan 1752. d. 13 Feb. 1816, and wife Elizabeth McGehee b. 7 Apr 1769, m. in Caswell Co., NC. Hope we can help her move her's and her brother, John's, search along. ******J.E.W. "Eli" Moore (born in North Carolina, deceased by 1840) and his wife, Elizabeth (born circa 1780) had ten children, some of whom died as young children. Elizabeth was listed in the 1840 Talladaga County, Alabama census. Their 10 children were: 1) Jane "Jennie" Moore (born 5/25/1802 in South Carolina. married abt. 1817 Benjamin Wileman. 2) Moses Cincinnati Moore (born circa 1800 in Georgia) married Mary Eliza Erwin/Irwin. They moved to Alabama in 1831 and settled in the Tallapoosa County area. 3) Edward Elias "Eli" Moore (born circa 1814-1815 in South Carolina) married 1850 Cynthia Caroline George. They are said to have lived in Ringgold, Georgia; in Lincoln and Franklin Counties in Tennessee and in Coosa and Talladega Counties in Alabama. In 1870 they lived in Marion County, Alabama and by the 1880 census had moved to Prentiss County, Mississippi. 4) James Moore, born circa 1795 5) William Moore 6) George Moore 7) Marcus Moore 8) Margaret Moore 9) John Moore, circa 1800 in South Carolina 10) Ellen Moore This information comes primarily from the census and from a Tennessee descendant of Reuben Moore (1775-1851) through his son, John Davis Moore, who settled in northeast Mississippi circa 1837. It is believed this line moved from either North Carolina or Virginia into South Carolina prior to 1800. Shortly after 1800, this Moore family moved from South Carolina to Tennessee (first to Lincoln County and then apparently to McNairy County ) prior to moving on to Mississippi. There is speculation that my ancestor, William K. Moore, was a brother of Moses Cincinnati Moore and thus the son of J.E. W. "Eli" Moore. If anyone has any knowledge of these Moores, I hope they will let me know. RESPONSES JUDY ALLEY (JudyAlley) sends this response to an inquiry from last week. In addition, also note the information submitted by Lucy Ann in the "Research" section. It ties into this response. Also, note the several Porter family references in the Sep 4 issue of MOORE NEWS. *****Greetings John and Margene, I am working on a Moore line that had ties to Pulaski, Carroll and Grayson Counties in SW VA. How disergreeable rainy weather is; when the little girls and boys have to be kepin, some of them are freting all the time when thare nurses will be triing to quiat them and some of thare mothers will be provoked with them and will whip them when thay disserve it, and some will scold them and others will lock them up in some room, and others will put them to bed. [Miss Mason, Henrietta's teacher, marked nine words misspelled and added below the theme, "My dear child, you have succeeded very well for the first time. I am truly glad to see that you have presented your composition in Your Autograph.] ***** The Barker House, South Broad Street, National Register of Historic Places. Built probably about 1782 for Thomas and Penelope Barker. Thomas Barker had a long and brilliant career in colonial government and finally became London agent for the colony shortly before the Revolution. His service in this post, though brief, was conspicuously successful. His wife Penelope, according to tradition, presided over the Edenton Tea Part, October 25, 1774 -- the earliest known instance of purely political activity on the part of women in the American colonies. In 1830, long after Mrs. Barker's death, the house was bought by Augustus Moore, whose law office was known as "the judge shop" from the number of his students who became judges, as Moore himself and two of his sons did. His family owned the house until 1952, when the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Business and Professional Women's Club, and the Edenton Woman's Club raised the funds to move it to its present site, and to restore it for public use. It is now headquarters for the Edenton Historical Commission and is open year round as a visitor's center. ***** Jubilee Farm (formerly Poplar Neck), Countryside Rt. 32, South: Poplar Neck, as this plantation was called for 250 years, was patented in 1714 and 1721 by John Blount of Mulberry Hill. Richard B. Creecy, when he came of age, sold the place to Augustus Moore in 1835. At Judge Moore's death in 1851, his widow, who decided that Edenton was "too worldly a place" for her to bring up her family unaided, had the house built in 1853, and moved from the Barker house to Poplar Neck. Besides running the farm, Susan Moore read her husband's law books to her son William, whose vision was poor. someone asked him, when he was appointed a judge, where he had studied. "My mother," he answered, "was my only instructor." He left the farm to his brother John Armistead Moore, whose widow sold it in 1904 to Isaac Layden. RESEARCH Ye olde Editor (JBrown7169) has extracted the Moore patent abstracts from "Cavaliers and Pioneers," the monumental Virginia Archives project of some years ago as edited by Nell Nugent. These volumes cover the years 1623-1732. The abstracts are too numerous to use in MOORE NEWS, but I'll be happy to email to anyone who requests them. - - - - - - LUCY ANN (VPAG53A@prodigy.com) encountered some interesting information on another service's bulletin board and shares it with us. I was curious about this family that turns up so often in our Moore families and thought you would also be. This writeup follows their dispersal in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee up until the early days of the nation. Source: Virginia Historical Magazine, Vol. 57, No. 1, January 1949 ****** GALLAHUS (GALLAHOUGH) - James Gallahue (Gallohough), a Huguenot immigrant to Stafford County, Virginia, whose real name was probably Jacques Gallahaut, married, about 1685-90, Mary, daughter of William Russell. He is the presumed father of John and William Gallahue (also spelled Gallaher) of Stafford County and Darby Gallahue of Stafford and Prince William Counties. Darby Gallahue, born 1700-1710, married about 1729, Charlotte Ewell, daughter of Charles and Marianne (Bertrand) Ewell of Lancaster County. [Note: The Ewell, Bertrand, and Gallahue families were Huguenots from France, via England or Holland.] Charlotte appears to have moved to Caroline County with her sister, Mrs. Isaac White (nee Marianne Ewell), in the 1720's and to have settled on land left her by her father, Charles Ewell (d. 1722) on the south bank of the Rappahannock in Caroline County. In 1742 Darby and Charlotte Gallahue moved to Prince William County, where Darby was living as late as 1769 and Charlotte as late as 1782. They had issue: (1) William Gallahue (administration 1754 Prince William), m. circa 1751 Anne, daughter of Matthew Kenner of Northumberland County. She m. 2ndly, George Rowland and migrated to Pittsylvania (now Henry) County, VA, in 1765-66. Her daughters by her first marriage, were Charlotte Gallahue, m. 1767 Samuel Dalton, Jr., and Elizabeth Gallahue, who married Rodham Moore (1744-1810) of Patrick Co VA. (2) Probably John Gallahue, living 1769, married Mrs. Mary (Tackett) Butler, widow of William Butler of Prince William County and had at least one child, Rachel Gallahue who married Benjamin Burroughs. (3) Elizabeth Gallahue who married (1st) William Ashmore (d. 1771) and (2nd) John McMillan, Jr., and died about 1814 in Prince William County. Her children were: John Ashmore, William Ashmore, Jr., Walter Ewell Ashmore, and Charlotte Ashmore (wife of Isham Keith). (4) Margaret Gallahue, who married Col. Henry Peyton (d. 1781) of Prince William County (whose first wife was Anne Thornton). They had, among others, a daughter Frances Peyton, who m. John Brown of Augusta County. Her son James Ewell Brown m. Mrs. Anne (Stuart) McDowell a few years before the birth of her nephew, Gen. James Ewell Brown Stuart, who was named for his uncle by marriage. (6) Charles Gallahue. Capt. American Revolution, died 1777 while in the Revolutionary army, and bequeathed his 4,000 acres bounty land to his nephew Walter Ewell Ashmore. (7) Maria Gallahue, born 1753, married (1st) Charles Thornton of Prince William County, and (2) Alexander Keith (1748-1822) who later moved to Tennessee and Mississippi . She left issue by both marriages. __________________________________________________ MOORE NEWS: Compiled from email and other sources Distributed by Joyce Browning cJBrown7169@AOL.com 18 September 1996
