MOORE NEWS Volume I September 24, 1996 Issue 21 SALUTATIONS SANDY sent the below information which might be helpful to some of you searchers. Thanks, Sandy: ******* Someone just pointed out a URL on the WWW that can be searched to see if that organization (in this case it is Yates Publishing) has info on a husband and wife. If that marriage is found, then you have to order the Document Number -- naturally for a fee, which is $1.00 per document (there are 20 lines on the document order form that you need to print off) plus $3.00 for mailing and handling. The URL is: http://www.montana.com/yates/yatesearch.html - - - - - DAN (Sgt Daniel) and I are experimenting with ways to brighten up our distribution and provide some emphasis. My computer picks up the font changes below very well. I cut them from his message and pasted them to MOORE NEWS. But we also found that some people are not picking up the changes, particularly the color. So this is an experiment as well as Dan's instructions about modifying your computer defaults if it doesn't come through. * If color changes don't show, how alter your defaults to permit colored text? 1- Under "Members" menu select "set preferences." 2- Then select "font preferences." "ignore text colors" should not be checked. This is on Mac AOL version 2.7. (the latest) The PC version might be slightly different. * As for font & style changes these menus are in the same location as colors under "Edit." If you change fonts try to use common fonts. ie. Helvetica, New York, Times, Chicago, Courier. Uncommon fonts may cause text to reflow if the reader does not have it. ie. Graphite Light @%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@%@ Researching: BROWN, CLAPP, COLLINS, DELAINEY, DENMAN, GALLAGHER, ROGERS, MOORE, O'HARA, PARKHURST, PROUTY, RYAN, SMITH, SUTTON, THOMPSON, UTLEY, WILLIS and WINANS. I'd like some feedback from those who don't receive the variations and those who do - though I probably won't answer you. Dan would like to connect with others who are searching the Irish green families. NEW MEMBERS RENE (Reen69ie), a new member, is looking for some help with her Vermont family. *****In the Randolph County GA, 1850 census my family was listed as: Robert Moore age 39 born Del. male M.D. Moore age 30 born GA female Ann A. Moore age 11 born GA female J.K. Moore age 6 born GA (only male child) M.L. Moore age 4 born GA female Mary Moore age 2 born GA female My gr-gr grandmother was Margaret Lawry Moore, born June 4, 1845 (the 4 yr old in the 1850 census). Her death cert. in 1919 lists the name of her parents as Robert Moore (born Wash D.C.) and Margaret Davis (born GA). That's what led me to believe this 1850 census was the correct family. Margaret L. Moore later married Albert Bellows who lived in Lamoille County VT most of his life. In 1870 I found Margaret Moore as 25 yrs old living in the same city as Albert Bellows, and she was working as a servant. - - - - - Navy PM introduces a northeastern Moore family he'd like to carry back a little further. *****I have several Moore genalogies from Morris Co NJ in the 1750-90 time frame but haven't put them together yet. Thomas looks like a possibility. The Straights and Dickersons came from Southold, Long Island, from MA. Other allied families came from MA to NJ - Pray and Hayward. My Moores start with David b 25 Nov 1749 in NJ d aft 1790. He was m to Rachel Hayden 2 Sep 1777 (In Rockaway Records). Their children: Hannah, b 1778 who m William Cooper; Stephen b abt 1771 who m Rhoda Dickerson (my line); Nancy Moore b Jan 1765, d 21 Oct 1853, who m Rev Nathaniel Dickerson, Rhoda's brother; also a possible Josephus. Stephen and Rhoda had 5 children: Silas b abt 1789, d 26 Nov 1832 in Essex, NY, who m Betsey; Daniel (Dual) b 17 Apr 1798, 28 May 1844, who m Susan Hamilton 9 Oct 1831; Deborah b 12 Jun 1800, d 24 Feb 1889, who m Philo Hayes; Jonas, b 31 Jan 1803 in Essex, NY, d % Mar 1890 w m Rhoda Straight in 1834 (my line); and Eunice b 14 Feb 1806, d 21 Aug 1881 who m Nathaniel Dickerson, Jr. 4 Nov 1830. - - - - - WALTER MOORE ( WMoore7273@worldnet.att.net) is looking for another one of those Virginia to Tennessee families. It would have been so much easier if our ancestors had used strange names; but then some of them did, and we can't seem to find some of them either. And, yes, we do consider that Moor and Moore are the same name, if not the same line. ****** I'm new at this. Is it assumed that Moor and Moore are of the same family tree? We have traced back to Hezekiah Balch Moor born, 1973, Roane Co, Tenn, who married Mary Jane Lacy Waldrop, 1812 in Roane Co, Tenn. He was son of Joseph Moor, born 1761, Richmond, Virginia, married to Anna Fitzgerald who died 8/2/1821. Joseph's parents were William Moor and Sarah Perkins, no other info. - - - - - LYNN (LoughWater) brings us another family with early roots in Illionos. We must have quite a group searching there now. Hope you folks can get together and compare notes. ***** I live in Vancouver, WA. My mother was born a Moore. The oldest Moore on the tree to date is, Robert Moore b. ca. 1791-1794. I hope all you Illinois folks can put the IL Moores together. *****I have two Moore's who seem to be unrelated. I have no other information on these two men but there names. Any information would be appreciated. Clarence Douglas Moore who married Joy Vivianne Loman Born after 1891 and probably married after 1920. Her parents were Wilson Blair Loman, born Ottawa Ill, 1861 & Josephine Woodward Pike, born 1871, d 1946 Fowler Indiana. Samuel Moore who married Minnie E. Royer. She was born 1863. Her Great Grandfather on her mothers side was John George Kaylor, born VA 1781-1783, d Bellefontaine OH. He married in Rollin VA. That is all I have on these two Moore's, I would like to know more, and if anyone would like more info. on the names I have listed with these two Moores I would be happy to share. RESPONSES ELEANOR (EMalloy739, like some others I could name, have all the luck. And, of course, as we all know, one breakthrough leads to the next question. ***** I've had a major breakthrough on my ELIAS! A listing of original government land sales in Illinois show (federal) land purchased in Washington Co. IL in 1833 and 1837 by an ELIAS MOORE, and in 1838 and 1839 by an ELIAS C. MOORE. All these records show that purchaser was a resident of Wash. Co. (County Code 95). These years are those when my Elias was married to my g.g.g.grandmother Permilia (Stephens) and they lived in Washington Co. (Nashville) IL. He then disappears from my records and Permilia is married to Joseph Wells in 1850 Wash. Co. Census. Wells also purchased (railroad) land in Wash. CO. in 1852 & 1855. Maybe this land sales info will help someone find out more about him. Thanks a lot. COLONIAL MOORES PAM (SUNKST 7) and her Mother can be thanked for this unusual contribution. Thanks so much to Pam and her Mother. This is a terrific story, the kind you only find if someone took the trouble to communicate it. *****In looking through some of my mother's notes on the history of Prince Edward Island, Canada, I found the following which I thought might be of interest to some Moores: The Moore Family In the year 1808, Dr. David Moore with his wife and family excepting their daughter, Mary, emigrated from Devonshire, England to Mass. USA. Being still loyal Britishers after a short sojourn in the United States, they steered their barque for Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, which at that time was mostly forest primeval. While in "Mass," one daughter, Hannah, married a man named "Inkpen" and remained there. After getting the family settled in Charlottetown, Dr. Moore went back to England and returned with his daughter Mary and a young man named "Molyneoux". While crossing the ocean they were attacked by pirates. Having some guns and ammunition on board, for some time they tried to defend themselves, Mary, too assisting by handing up the powder. However, they were finally captured and but for the fact that Dr. Moore was a "Free Mason" high up in the order they would have to use the "piratical" term been obliged "To walk the plank." Instead they placed them in an open boat giving the Dr. a defective compass and Mary her feather bed. They took from them all their other possessions but some sterling silver teaspoons that Mary concealed in the front of her waist. These are still owned by some of their descendants. After drifting for some time they landed at Newfoundland and later on succeded in making their way back to Charlottetown, greatly to the relief of all their family. They afterwards moved out to Milton - some seven miles from the town and where several of their descendants still reside." This is page 16 of a 1976 xerox copy of a few pages from a spiral notebook, entirely hand written, entitled "A genealogical record of the Robinson and Warrens. Copied exactly as recorded by Isabella Robinson Warren, 1861 -1945. Property of Wendell Kielly, Stanhope, P.E. Island, Canada" Mr. Kielly was a noted Island historian and the author of some local historical books. He died a few years ago, but I believe most of his published works, and perhaps even his notes, are in the archives in Charlottetown. I still have family there and I would be happy to assist in any way I can. RESEARCH VERNA (VLerdall) has made another tremendous contribution to MOORE NEWS. Land records help us distinguish the various ancestors of similar names; but wills, such as this compilation sent to us by Verna, give us information about the entire family. Sometimes you almost have the feeling that wills were written so that we could learn the total dimension of a single ancestral family. There are many aspects to this compilation. This Caswell line of Moores and related families appear to draw in Moores from all directions.
