MOORE NEWS Volume I October 2, 1996 Issue 22 Part A SALUTATIONS "Welcome everyone! Now we are there - - - Volume I, Issue I. Nobody ever had a page blanker than the one I am looking at right now." That was our opening line a short four months ago. I was so new at email distributions, the first issue went out a day early and unfinished. Fewer than 10 people were on the address list. Now there are 155 Moores with 4 or 5 new participants signing on each week. In fact you've been so generous in sharing your Moore stories, your hard earned research results, the contents of handwritten notes kept by older family members, your lineages, and bits of yourselves, that this week's issue has two installments. There is simply too much material for one message form. A few weeks after that opening statement above, we had about twenty Moores and in Issue 6, I observed: "Don't you agree with me that we Moores are a pretty accomplished and interesting group of folks? Wait till you meet the rest of us!" One thing changed: Issue 1 was the only one that went out inadvertently and incomplete. My views about 'our' Moores didn't change: We are a great group of folks! - - - - - - - MARGENE (MargeneR) sends the below information about Family Conference Rooms: *****On AOL every night there is a Family Reunion Conference Room. The meeting is centered around surnames starting with a different letter of the alphabet. Here is the schedule: the meeting begins at 10 pm Easter, 9 pm Central, 8 pm Mountain, 7 pm Pacific. 1-A, 2-B, 3-C, 4-D, 5-E, 6-F, 7-G, 8-H, 9-I, 10-J, 11-K, 12-L, 13-M, 14-N, 15-O, 16-P, 17-Q, 18-R, 19-S, 20-T, 21-U, 22-V, 23-W, 224-X, 25-Y, 26-Z. 27th through the 31sr are open for anyone to gather. For instance, if you are a member of the Gates Family, you would stop by on the 7th of the month to meet with other Gates relatives. If you are researching the Allen surname, you would attend on the first of each month. This way you may easily find others who could be researching the same name and compare notes. - - - - - - - PAUL (PaulPhipps) sends us information about some WEB sites that many of our participants might find useful. ******One of my cousins, Jeff Weaver, has a number of things on the WEB that are of general interest. The items and URLs are as follows: * Marriages in Ashe Co, NC: http://members.aol.com/jweaver301/smyth/ashemarr.htm * Ashe Co, NC Home Page at: http://members.aol.com/jweaver300/grayson/ashegen.htm * 1790 Wilkes Co., NC Census, and couple of other Wilkes County items to the Web: http://members.aol.com/jweaver300/grayson/wilk1790.htm * Wilkes County reps in State Legislature 1778-1810: http://members.aol.com/jweaver300/grayson/wilkrep.htm * Wilkes County officers (Sheriff, etc.): http://members.aol.com/jweaver300/grayson/wilkoff.htm NEW MEMBERS JEANINE (JenGen) brings us another northeastern Moore family. Seems we've seen some of these names before. ***** I live in Salem, Oregon, manage a nursing home, and if that does not keep me busy, there is genealogy! I have two Moore lines. One in Iowa, the other in early Connecticut. First, I want to introduce Orville H. Moore, a carpenter/farmer b. 19 Mar 1830 in New York, his father was born in New Jersey, and his mother in CT, names unknown. Orville's wife was Mary A. ____ b. 1831 in PA. In 1860 the family was in Vernon Springs, Howard Co., Iowa, but by 1880 they had moved to Floyd, Floyd Co., IO where Orville died in 1883 and Mary died in 1889. Children: 1. Charles Philip, b. 1857 in Iowa, m. Clara Catherine Snyder in 1879, one of the earliest marriages recorded in Floyd Co., IO; descendants moved to Canada. 2. Julia Morriah, b. 1866, she m. William Carsner, they moved to Colorado where Julia died in 1904. Her husband and daughter Bertha Arms) moved to Oregon. The only surviving son, Urban, moved to California, and lived in San Jose area. 3. William O., b. 1868 in Iowa, probably a Methodist minister. 4. Abbie Elizabeth, b. 1870 in Iowa. I hope to determine Orville's parents, his wife Mary's maiden name, and any more information on their children or descendants. Second, I want to introduce Miles Moore, born ca. 1627, Powerstock, Dorsetshire, England. He was in Milford, CT as early as 1640, m. Isabel Joyner. They resided in New London and CT. Children: 1. Abel (1644-1689) b. New London, m. Hannah Hempstead. 2. Miriam (ca 1650-Aft 1706), m. John Willey, lived in Hadaam, CT 3. Deborah m. John Stebbins, also lived in New London. I have some information to share, and I would like more details on this family, especially through Abel's son, Joshua Moore. - - - - - - - KATHY (NJThree@dplus.net) has been researching her Moore family and has been stuck in Pennsylvania for the past 6 years. *****I would appreciate any information in connection to the following. I was absolutely thrilled to find this group and hope I may also contribute to someone's search. I have information, at this time, only in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. - - - - - - - GARY (gfletch@erols.com) brings our northern Virginia contingent to almost 10 people. We welcome another one. Gary picked the right field to 'retire' to - the growth and construction that's going on in this area is mind boggeling. ******A little about myself: My name is Gary Fletcher and I live in Alexandria, VA. I'm retired Air Force as of 5 years ago and am just beginning a career in real estate. I know very little about the Moores in my line and would like to expand that knowledge. John A. Moore, Sr. b. 5 Sep 1761, Louisa Co, VA, d. 6 Jan 1842 Bedford Co, Tn. Married Eleanor G. Marbrey abt 1787, Rowan Co, NC. Their children: Sarah D. Moore b abt 1792; John A. QUERIES SANDY (GOLFOGEY) sends the following query. ****** My MOORE line is as follows: (1) John MOORE (born and died when and where?) md when and where to Nancy _____ (born and died when and where?). Perhaps her maiden name was LEE or MORROW according to the DAR Patriot Index, Centennial Edition on pg 2064. John and Nancy had: (2) William P. Elkanah had 9 siblings, some of whom md into the families of ALLEN, CUSTER, HIGGINS, and HUNTLEY. Elkanah and Nancy had: (4) Emma Alwilda MOORE, b 20 Oct 1853 in Knoxville, IL; d 7 Dec 1933 (I was only 8 years old, but I remember her) in Santa Barbara, CA; md Sydney Wilberforce IRELAND (1843 IL --- 1918 CA) on 20 Oct 1870 in Woodland, CA. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks in advance. - - - - - - - JOYCE (JBrown7169) is still trying to find an abstract of the following will. *****Just reporting in that I'm still looking for the will of William Moore of Craven Co SC. I understand that all South Carolina wills were centrally filed at the Colonial Office at the time. A document filed in Loudon County VA in 1782 transfers administration of the estate of William Moore of Craven Co SC from his son Jesse to his son Jeremiah. Any help will be appreciated. In addition, does anyone have information on the Cloud's Creek Massacre that took place in South Carolina in 1781? James Butler and his son, James, previously of Prince William Co VA, were killed. I'd like to know what other families were involved. I believe William Travis was involved and later went on to face another enemy at the Alamo (that's if my memory is working right). RESPONSES JAN ( CYBERCUB21) is a new participant with her husband, Dave. Both have Moore lines. Their introduction will appear next week along with supporting research from another participant. Jan sent the following response to a question in last week's distribution. She will continue looking for verification of the marriage of Judith Walker to John Moore of Albemarle Co VA - if she finds it, we'll have an excuse to look more carefully and the Walker family of Albemarle - an intriguing family: ******Our records on the Moores, which were prepared by Dave's mother, Ruth Moore Williams, are extensive and very well documented. She interviewed dozens of family members, and her own mother lived to be 104 years old, providing first hand information for several decades. The name of Judith Walker, according to something we received by e-mail this week, is apparently questioned by some Moore rooters. Joyce Browning sent me some sketches of records which had been documented in Albemarle Co., VA and were "stashed at the historical society." She said their validity is not verified, but they are believed to be complete. These sketches show that John Moore, whose son Jessey married Alley Johnson, was the son of a John Moore, born 1720 and died in 1794 in Spotsylvania Co., VA. He is recorded to have two definite wives: one a Susannah from Spotsylvania, CO and the other Agness Melton. Joyce's notes says "there may be been an intervening marriage to Judith Walker of Albemarle Co., but this seems uncertain." Upon further review of Dave's mother's documentation, we have a chart showing that Judith Walker was married to John Moore, although at this moment we have been unable to find her original documentation which would reflect her source of info. (Usually, her comments are referenced by a phrase such as "from g-grandma's Bible", etc.) I will keep looking for our benefit and hope you will let me know if this info is of interest to you, too. - - - - - - - SUE (SueSkay) responded to a query of several weeks ago concerning the will of William Moore of Prince William Co VA who died testate in Craven Co SC about 1780. *****In working on our Gulley Moore line, we noticed in 1790 Cheraw, Marlboro, SC, along with our Gulley Moore, there was a Jeremiah and a Jethro. Also in 1796 Montgomery Co., TN about the time our Moore's show up there were land transactions for a Jesse Moore. Gulley's youngest son was named William A. Moore. - - - - - - - BOB (Patwarnes) is back at his 'Responder' post after a 2-week absence. Did not show Obediah's wife or children. BIOGRAPHY LUCY ANN (VPAG53A@prodigy.com)sends the information below. With her information, we know that we are now looking at least three Moore families in early Prince William Co/Fairfax Co VA. One is William Moore, wife Mary, and their son James. The second is William Moore who built the brick church for Dettingen Parish and was the father of Jesse and Jeremiah Moore and who died in Craven Co SC ca1781. [Note from Joyce: In an earlier biography about Jeremiah Moore, September 4, 1996, I mistakenly reported that his parents were William Moore and his wife, Mary. Further research shows that this information was incorrect inasmuch as there were two William Moores in Prince William County at that time. William Moore whose wife was Mary died testate in Fairfax Co. Jesse and Jeremiah's father, William, the church builder, moved to Craven Co SC where he died testate in ca1781.] Lucy Ann's information below, introduces a third Prince William family ******This information came from an off line participant and is excerpted from "Kentucky-A History of the State." 4th Edition, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, P. 951. **** HENRY B. MOORE was born December 11,1826. His paternal ancestors came from Virginia, and were of English descent. His grandfather, Jesse Moore, came to Kentucky in an early days by flat boat, and landed on the present site of Louisville, when there were but few cabins in that now flourishing city. He settled near the Chaplin River in Nelson County, was a farmer, and died a number of years before H. B. Moore's birth. John R. Moore was born in Virginia about 1785, and was brought to Kentucky in his infancy. He settled in Washington County in early manhood and engaged in farming in what is now the Glenville Precinct, where he acquired a large estate. He was a soldier in the Indian War of 1811-12, serving under Gen. Anthony Wayne, and in 1845 was elected to represent Washington County in the State Legislature; was magistrate for a number of years under the old Constitution, and died in Bloomfield, Nelson County, in 1858. His wife was Martha Bayne, daughter of Walter Bayne, who came to Kentucky before the organization of the State. He was a native of Virginia, located near the Moore settlement on Chaplin River, and there died. Mrs. Moore was born in Virginia, was brought to Kentucky, when quite young, and died in Washington County in 1851, aged sixty-five years. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Moore were the following: Jetson, W. H., Walther B., Jesse, Milton, James F., Henry B., Susan (Hill), and J. R. Moore. Henry B. Moore was born and has lived all his life in Washington County. He was reared to agricultural pursuits and received a fair English education in the country schools which he attended until twenty years of age. At the breaking out of the Mexican war, he enlisted in the Fourth Kentucky Infantry with which he served from September, 1847, until July of the following year, his regiment remaining in the City of Mexico the greater part of that time. He returned to Washington County after the close of the war, and in 1852 purchased his present farm in Glenville Precinct, nine miles north of Springfield, where he has since resided. His 400 acres are all under cultivation. He engaged in the distillery business about 1852, and for twenty years thereafter did a thriving business, manufacturing the Moore and Grigsby brand, which achieved a noted reputation. Mr. Moore was married June 29, 1852, in Washington County, to Miss Jane M. Pile, daughter of Benjamin and Rhoda (Weathers) Pile, of the same county. . . Mr. and Mrs. Moore have had eight children, namely: Mary E. (deceased), Lucas, Victor C. (deceased), Luther (deceased), Lulu B. (wife of Isaac Breeding), J. r., Mary W., and an infant (deceased). Mr. Moore is a Democrat in politics and, with his wife, belongs to the Christian Church, with which he as been identified twenty-five years. This family has traced Jesse Moore to his father, William Moore (1712-1780), of Prince William County VA and Craven County SC . Jesse Moore was the brother of Jeremiah Moore who was profiled in the Sep 4 issue. Henry Moore, also of Colchester, Fairfax County (previously Prince William County), may be connected with William Moore and his sons, Jesse and Jeremiah, in an unknown manner. He wrote his will on 17 May 1772, and it is recorded in Fairfax County Will Book C, P. 149-151. He mentions his land in Fairfax Co including two lots in the town of Colchester and his land in Maryland. His will identifies his children as: sons Cleon and Cato; 'my four daughters' Susanna-married to George Summers, Sarah, Jane King, and Ann Pinner. He mentions his wife, but does not list her name. He also leaves bequests of 8 pounds current money to Mrs. Hannah Brent, wife of Mr. William Brent of Dumfries, and her brother Mr. Thomas Neale. He appointed 'friends' Hector Ross and Alexander Henderson and son, Cleon, Executors. The will was witnessed by Mary Courts, William Hamilton, John Davidson, Allen Macdonald, James Rattray and proved on 14 April 1773.
