NEW MEMBERS CappyW introduces her husband, CHARLES, a new Moore participant, and good news of a successful search trip in New York. Congratulations! ******Great trip to Salem, New York to research the Moores and to Hoosick, New York just 15 miles away. My husband Charles is the Moore in our family. He is 68 and a retired actuary. Born to a University family in Ann Arbor, moved to Iowa, then to Pepperell, Massachusettes to live with his grandparents. He was part of the early entrant program at the University of Chicago, going there at the age of 15 and remaining in the city of Chicago ever since. I am the family genealogist so that is why I am the correspondent: What we found in Salem: James Moore (aka "Mad" Moore) came to Salem, New York August 7, 1764, with a religious group from Northern Ireland. It is supposed that he was born in Perth, Scotland. He brought with him his wife (name unknown) and his two sons, James and Hugh, the younger. James moved on to Ohio after the War of Independence. We found no other information on him in Salem. Hugh remained in Salem, though he may not have died there. He married Sarah Dunlap and produced at least four children as follows: James Moore - died young Nancy Moore - married Dr. Hubbard and "moved west". Sarah Moore - b. October 16, 1774 d. August 18, 1852 m. Rich Prouty and lived near Battenkill, New York Hugh Moore, Jr. - record of his name in 1777 Children of Hugh: John Dunlap Moore - m. Mary Davis and lived in Vermont. Their child, Hiram Dunlap Moore was an early settler in Plymouth, Vermont. This Moore family is traced in the book "The Early Settlers of Plymouth, Vermont" William Moore - married Sally Weaver and produced at least one child, named Paschal D. Moore "Mad" Moore's wife died and he married again producing at least one child, David Moore. - - - - - - - Jan and Dave Williams (CYBERCUB21) are researching a Moore family in Dave's line. Jan sends this information about them. This Moore family can be traced to Globe NC (Caldwell Co). ***** Jesse Moore, Sr. (b. 1743 d. 1827) and Alley Johnson Moore (b 1745 d. 1826). We believe that the father of Jesse Moore Sr was a John Moore who married Judith Walker, probably from Albemarle Co VA. The children of Jesse and Alley Johnson Moore are: Daniel Moore, b 12-12-1764; he married Rachel Stone, had 9 children. Following her death, he married Rachel Carroll, had 3 more children. (See below profile.) Mollie Moore, b 6-2-1766 Jesse Moore, Jr., b 7-19-1768 Millie Moore, b 3-31-1770 Alley Moore, b 1-16-1772 John Moore, b 2-18-1774 Biddie Moore, b 5-3-1775 Rebeckah Moore, b. 5-24-1777 Betsy Moore, b. 2-22-1780 Judith Moore, b. 8-12-1782 Nancy Moore, b. 12-25-1786 Jesse Moore, Jr. (above) married Elizabeth (Betsy) Stone. Their children are: David, Sallie, (Rev.) Job, Polly, Fannie and Daniel. Daniel Moore (above)married first Rachel Stone, his childhood sweetheart from VA, for whom he returned to VA to marry and bring back to NC. They had 8 children: Polly (married Langston Estes), Fannie (married Minyard Harris), Daniel (married Betsy Hight), Alley (married Jesse C. Moore, son of Daniel Moore Sr. and Rachel Stone Moore), Job (married Nancy Stone Height), Charity, married Lerz Estes, son of Laban Estes; Nancy (married Elijah Boone--we have a Boone book, too), and David (married Sarah Moore, daughter or Daniel Moore Sr. and Rachel Carroll Moore.) Following Rachel Stone's death, he married Rachel Carroll (my husband's ancestor) and had three more children: Carroll (my husband's ancestor), Rachel, and Myra. - - - - - - - ANNE (ANNETO) introduces another New England family and offers to share with others. QUERIES SANDI (Varow48) found the following query and submitted it to MOORE NEWS. It was from NANCY (NancyNeely@msn.com) who is now a participant. Nancy, hope we're not jumping the gun on you. ***** MOORE, ASA b.abt 1665/70. Looking for parents/ancestors of ASA MOORE. The IGI lists two possible ASAs: one in Worcester and one in Bolton, MA, born within 6 mos of each other. Would like to find out who these two ASAs married in order to rule out parents. My ancestor m.1792 REBECCA GODDING of Watertown, MA. They moved to Jay, ME area where they raised their family and are buried. - - - - - - - Bob Moore (Patwarnes) has a non-Moore question, but it's one that might be of interest to MOORE NEWS participants. ****Does one of our members have an E-Mail listing or know where a person can get a listing for the major newspapers around the country? RESPONSES SANDI (Varow48) answers an earlier Query and hopes this information will help Nancy (above) and the earlier MOORE NEWS inquirer. *****The in-law of my Moore line is Nathanial Loomis. Nathaniel was the younger brother of my ancestor Deacon John Moore (son of Joseph). Nathaniel's wife was Elizabeth Moore (dau. of Deacon John Moore). The original houses of both Dea. John Moore and Dea. John Loomis still stand in Windsor, CT. They were built in 1640. When the Ruggles family branched out from Sudbury, a bunch of them, including mine, wound up in the Windsor neighborhood (Wethersfield, Farmington, Suffield, etc.) I have often felt related to a large segment of the population in these towns, through Winchells, Strongs, Hubbards, Graves, Porters and Bronsons. A mirage, I'm sure. Jonathan Ballard had a brother Ephraim who was married to Martha Moore, who was related to Alice, but they were not sisters. Martha was the author of" A Midwife's Tale." Her diary was published under that name, and will be (was?) aired on PBS this month. Ephraim and Martha moved to Hallowell, ME. Sandi has a GED of this family. It's too long for MOORE NEWS. MOORE MISCELLANY SUE (SueSkay) on the trail of some Mississippi Moores found this glance into our past in "The Land Between the Two Rivers." by Carol Lynn Mead. ******** "The population of Madison County (MS) grew considerably during the early to middle 1800's, after the Choctaw Treaty greatly lessened the threat from Indians. Many of the migrants, who eventually settled in Madison County, were South Carolinians, and most descendents of Madison County settlers can trace their ancestry back to South Carolina. Even today, Madison County bears earmarks of the South Carolina influence, in the names of some of it's towns, such as Camden and Charleston. "In 1837, Alfred Galloway and his wife Sophia Ann Betts Galloway, migrated with their five sons from Brunswick County, North Carolina, to Madisonville, Mississippi. They traveled in covered wagons drawn by oxen, accompanied by four other families: the Moores, the Finleys, the Hollands, and the Dinkins. Arriving in Madisonville, all settled within two miles of each other. Alfred Galloway brought with him all his slaves, who remained with the family all their lives, even after freedom was granted, and were buried in the family cemetery. "A farmer, Alfred Galloway quickly acquired land and built a house about a mile north of the Natchez Trace. Just east of this house, on the ridge that divides rainfall between the Big Black and the Pearl Rivers, the Galloway Family Cemetery was located. Sophia Ann Betts Galloway was the first person buried here - in 1845. The last person buried in the cemetery was Columbus Hervey Galloway, her grandson, who died in 1972." [Sue's Note: Our Daniel Moore, son of James Moore was involved with Alfred Galloway. Alfred's son James Hervey Galloway was the first doctor in Madisonville. James Hervey Galloway married Sarah J. Moore, daughter of our Daniel & Mary Moore. I believe these Moore's traveled from Brunswick Co., NC with the Galloway's were also related to our James and Daniel.] More from Sue: I have an outline of another Moore line someone might be interested in. This Moore family shows up in Lamar Co., TX in the 1830's one of the original settlers along with Samuel Moore Fulton. Samuel Moore Fulton was the owner of Fulton's Landing on the Red River. This is where most of the early settlers came into NE Texas, as well as needed supplies. The Moore's settled in a small community outside of Paris called Moore's Springs. Interestingly, this Moore family is somehow connected to our Daniel Moore line, but as of yet have not been able to make a connection. Leven V. Moore's daughter Nancy Matilda Moore and husband Jerry J. Hamilton, filed suit for custody of Daniel's granddaughters Nancy Sterlinea Fredonia Goodrich and Mary Elizabeth Goodrich. These were the daughters of Nancy C. Moore and Sterling Goodrich. There is also a Tinnin family connected to both lines, thus maybe this is where the connection is, and the fact that they share the Moore surname may only be a coincidence. I obtained this record from the Lamar Genealogical Society in Paris Texas, so there is no guarantee of it's accuracy. Hope this will help someone!
