MOORE NEWS Volume I October 23, 1996 Issue 26 SALUTATIONS The season or the frustration of trying to pull a family together that won't come together must be getting to me. With a little nudge from Ramona (see below) I've coined a new term for family study - well, I've coined it as far as I'm concerned cause haven't heard it before. From now on, I'm not doing genealogy or family history research - I'm rooting around. Either a glutton for punishment, or hogging all the abstracts of a specific county, or a pig when consuming data. Anyway you shake it "rooting" is a good description. NEW MEMBERS Clarence G. Moore (CMoore6630) introduces another NY family. We must have about ten New York rooters now. ******Was born and raised in Ithaca, NY. Am a retired Vocational teacher and a part time bus driver. Married Hannah Allan from Scotland and have three married sons. One in Ct. One in GA, and one in FL. Am continuing the work of my cousin who traced the Moore line back to a John Moor(e) born in RI on 10/24/1782, married an Abigail Bennett b.12/28/1782, in Tiverton, RI. After they married it is believed they went to VT.Then on to NY. Had a son born in Hoosick, NY. and ended up in Boylston, Oswego Co. NY. Most of his decendants still remain in this area. - - - - - - - - Cogan99153@aol.com has a good start, but stops short somewhere between PA and KY. *****I received the following about 15 years ago but didn't note the source. Ancestors and Descendants of ALEXANDER WALKER GLENN and NANCY AUSTIN James Moore, son of William and Margaret Moore, was born in 1769 and died on June 8, 1858, in Madison Co., KY. His wife was Mary (Polly) but we do not know her maiden name. She was born in Albemarle Co., VA, in 1772 and died in Madison Co., KY, June 20, 1857. Their children were Elizabeth, born Jan. 15, 1796, married Duffey Peyton in 1818, Madison Co., KY, and she died Sept. 14, 1855; Margaret, born in 1798, married Craven Peyton on Nov. 4, 1822, and she died on April 23, 1873; Ann, born in 1800, married Jeremiah White in October of 1822, and she died in 1885; William P. Moore, born in 1805, married Amanda Barnett in 1839, and died in 1885; Allie, born in 1805, married Rhodes Gentry in 1825, and she died in 1835; Elisha, born in 1807, married in 1830 to Amanda Gentry, and he died before 1852; Nancy married Milton E. Moberly on Oct. 12, 1829, and she died before 1834; Mary Polly Moore married Edward Moberly on Dec.13, 1832, and she died before 1836; Jane married her brother-in law, Milton E. Moberly on Feb. 5, 1834; and, Emily M. Moore married John M. Elder on Oct.24, 1837. Jane Moore, daughter of William and Margaret Moore, was first married to Alexander W. Douglass. We have not located their marriage record so we do not know if they were married in Pennsylvania or Lincoln Co., KY. She was one of the older children and their were Douglass families in Lancaster Co., PA who probably came to Kentucky about the same time the Moores came because there were some Douglass families in Madison Co., KY in the 1790's. Several children were born to Jane and Alexander Douglass but we are certain of only a few of them. Their daughter, Jane, married William Todd on Jan. 12, 1804. Another daughter, Polly, married John Ogan on Nov. 8, 1797. William Glenn signed the permission slips for them to get married and referred to them as his step-daughters. The Madison Co., KY, tax records show that Jane Douglass paid taxes on May 11, 1790, so her husband, Alexander Douglass, died some time before that. She is referred to as Jane Glenn on Nov. 6, 1792, in the court records when she, George Douglass, and John Snoddy asked that a certificate be granted to them for obtaining letters of administration on the estate of Alexander Douglass, deceased. There is no record of Jane's marriage to William Glenn, but they were married in that time between May 11, 1790 and Nov. 6, 1792. Another daughter, Betsey, was one of the heirs to the Wright Moore Estate and is referred to in his will as a niece. They had a son, James, who married his cousin, Betsey Burnsides on July 7, 1808. Among the marriage records of Madison Co., KY, there are several Douglass marriages, but, since there were other Douglass families there at that time, we do not know if they are children of Alexander and Jane Douglass. There was an Elizabeth Douglass who married Henry Hamilton on April 8, 1802. Peggy Douglass was married to Dudley Farris in 1805. (Dudley Farris witnessed the John Ogan to James McCormick transfer of property on Silver Creek on Feb. 25, 1811.) Sinthia Douglass married Martin Douglass in 1808. William Douglass married Isabella Lawlin in 1799. Another William Douglass married Frankie Jamison in 1801. There was an Alexander Douglass who moved to Boone Co., MO, where he died in 1838. His heirs were William, James, Polly (who married John Ogan), all of Boone Co., MO, and Martin Douglass of Gasconade Co., MO. They deeded land to Dudley Farris, 125 acres on Silver Creek, bounded by Jacob's line, Martin Glenn, and Durrett White, dated March 24, 1838. James Douglass went to Pettis Co., MO. I would appreciate any help in finding out more information about William and Margaret Moore, and whether they were both from Albemarle Co., VA. Who were William's parents? Perhaps the string of associated names will trigger some answers. - - - - - - - - Jim Moore in Kent, Ohio (JamesM5858) is new to MOORE NEWS and new to genealogy. Hope we can give him a big push off into the depths of rooting. I wrote you a note a couple days ago asking about your Moore news. Since my wife retired, she is researching our family surnames, and I became interested. My Moore family never gave me much info about my ancestors probably because I was ten years younger than my brother. My father was Willard W. Moore born in Portage County, Ohio in 1897. His parents were James Loren Moore and Ella R. Moody born 1858 and 1862 respectfully. Loren's parents were James Moore and Mary ? They were born in 1826 and probably married in 1856. They had 3 children, Rachel, Ransom, and Loren. I think both James and Mary were born in Pa. Our line of Moore's were originally from Ireland. One of my ancestors also was in the Battle of Lake Erie in 1812. If anyone has any help, I would appreciate hearing. - - - - - - - - Ramona (RamonaBG) - how many of you have also felt like you were lurking around when you were rooting for family information. I know I have. ******Greetings! My name is Ramona, and I have decided to stop lurking. I've been doing genealogy for about a year, whenever I can fit it in with a 21 month old running around. This is a mystery family to both my dad and myself. He found out he was adopted by his stepfather when he was 16, and met his dad, John Moore, when he was 17. I have traced this family to Iowa. My gg grandfather is Nathan Moore. He was born in 1861 in Iowa. It is possible that his parents are from PA. He married Floral Rodenbough, and by 1875, started having children. They all ended up in Oregon by 1900. Is anybody else researching Iowa or Penn Moore's? QUERIES Kenneth and Jeannie Griffin (KL2000G@aol.com) are new participants. If we can answer her, we may take a giant step toward linking a lot of the NC/SC/VA Moores. ***** John Moore and Samson Moore were executors for the estates of Daniel Boothe ca 1801, and Solomon Boothe ca 1810 Orange Co., NC. Our Rev War Series should soon reach the John Moore group, but others may already have this information. ***** According to the DAR Patriot Index - Centenniel Edition, Part 2, pg 2064, there are two possibilities for my John Moore. This info is either one of the following: John Moore, b 1769 PA, d 8-15-1842 PA, m Nancy Morrow Drm PA WPNS, or John Moore, b -----, d 1798 VA, m Nancy Lee Mstr VA. Since the first John was born in 1769 and the Amer Rev was roughly 1775--1781, it seems that the second John is mine. There are no other Johns on pg 2064 who md a Nancy. Does anyone know the names of the descendants of these two soldiers? RESPONSES None this week. No one's found that William Moore Craven Co SC will of 1780-81 either. Self-published, McLean, Va: 1986.pp. 115-118 [Note: The following genealogy is among the original papers of President Madison and believed to be in his handwriting. James Madison is the eldest of twelve children -- eight sons and four daughters -- of whom but one brother and one sister are now living. He was born on the north bank of the Rappahannock, at Port Conway, opposite the town of Port Royal, on the 5th of March, 1751. His father's name was James, the son of Ambrose Madison and Frances Taylor. He lived to the age of seventy-eight years, and died in February 1801. The father of Ambrose was John, the son of John Madison, who it appears took out, by a statement of a patent now in possession , certain lands on the shores of the Chesapeake, between North and York Rivers, in Gloucester county, near Colonel Taylor's creek, in the year 1653, -- 6th Charles II -- Richard Bennet, Governor and Captain-General of Virginia. The ancestors of Frances Taylor are traced one remove further back, and were residents of the same district of country. The name of his mother was Nelly Conway, descended from some of the early settlers. Her father, Francis, lived near Port Royal, in the county of Caroline, whose father Edwin Conway, married Elizabeth Thompson. Her mother, Rebecca was the daughter of E. Gaines and John Catlett, whose father, John was born in Virginia and educated in England. He was killed by Indians in defending the fort of Port Royal, - being a first settler. A great-aunt of his was likewise killed by the Indians lower down the river. It appears that all the ancestry just traced were natives of Virginia, and, it is believed, for the most part at least, if not altogether, of English descent. In both the paternal and maternal lines of ancestry they were planters, and among the respectable though not the most opulent class. --Source: Old Churches, Ministers, and Families of Virginia; Bishop William Meade; originally published in 1857 and reprinted by the Genealogical Publishing Company in 1966. __________________________________________________ MOORE NEWS: Compiled from email and other sources Distributed by Joyce Browning cJBrown7169@AOL.com 23 October 1996
