MOORE NEWS Volume I October 30, 1996 Issue 27 SALUTATIONS The growth of MOORE NEWS continues to be nothing short of phenomenal. We now have over 200 participants. Subscribers discover MOORE NEWS in a variety of ways: other correspondents, announcements on web sites, library bulletin boards, etc. We've reduced on the space used for new member introductions, cleared out our new member files two weeks ago with an extra issue, and increased the number of new members profiled in each issue, yet we still accumulate a backlog. This doesn't include new members who don't submit a profile. Each week we average 8-10 new members. One more statistic: approximately 78% of our participants are southern in origin reflecting the agrarian nature of the economic base and the constant quest for new land. - - - - - - - - MIKE (MikeLi1212) sends word of his new venture concerning the Parker family. ******I am starting to put info on a WEB site. Please visit - http://members.aol.com/knifecut Click on the genealogy folder for access to parker.txt - - - - - - - - SANDY (GOLFOGEY) sends an important alert to all of us who become too complacent about our data. Thanks for the reminder, Sandy. *****Perhaps you read or heard about our fire in San Marcos and nearby communities last week. It didn't destroy any homes here, but it did wipe out about 90 homes just a few miles from us. (My wife and I left and stayed all night with our daughter and her family who live approx 25 miles away. We came back to a house full of smelly smoke, but otherwise it was OK.) As a result of this unfortunate event, I just made a Master Back Up copy of my genealogy data which I'll put in our Safety Deposit Box in the bank on Monday. If I lost everything in my computer to a fire, I probably wouldn't want to start over inputting the info into a computer. Somebody else had a similar problem not too long ago (I learned this through some E-mail), but I wasn't smart enough to take any action at that time. NEW MEMBERS WILLIAM (wmdisbro@mail.lava.net) writes: *****I found a reference to your research on the net and am just starting to learn about the Moores in my family. I do not have much to go on as this has been a line which has come up against a stone wall. Eunicia Moore married an unknown Disbro possibly in IL or IA. She had a brother named Leo, and three children Brythea, Ernest and Myrtle. Ernest was my grand father. He was born in Corning, Adams County, Iowa and the other two children where born somewhere in MO. This was back at the turn of this century. Ernest, the only one I have a hard data on, was born 1894. Eunicia according to a census report was born in Ill. Any help that you may have to offer would be greatly appreciated. Now I have two Aunts (sisters) telling different stories. One is telling a variation of the family legend and the other is saying the family came from a Cherokee reservation and were adopted by a missionary named Moore. The furtherest back I am able to go is to my great grandfather. He lived in a small town in Fla. called Gotha. The town was in Orange Co, I think, but I am not sure of that. One of my aunts was born in Kissimi, Fla. and I don't think that is in Orange Co. Either way Gotha doesn't seem to be a township anymore, I can't find it on any maps or even mentioned in Fla. history. Any light that can be shed on this situation would be most helpful. My great grandfather's name was Henry (Clay) Moore. He married Caroline Dann. I know that they were in or around Gotha in 1890 probably before, because my grandfather, William Arthur Moore, was born in Oct. of that year. He m. Adelaide E. Leveque in Jacksonville Fla. in 1915. I hope someone can point me in the right direction. - - - - - - - - DAVID (Dcornet) is a new MOORE NEWS participant and wonders if anyone can help him with his Florida family. ***** I don't know where my Moores and Stovall's come from. QUERIES SANDI (Varow48) has a correspondent who presented an interesting question which she passes along to us wondering if any of us can respond. ******Says Sandi's correspondent: Is there ever any mention of Benjamin Moore, the founder of the paint company in NJ? I have a friend, Edgar Benjamin Moore, named for him. His ggf loaned his brother, Ben, some money to start a paint co. I know they have researched this family. The annual stock holders' meeting is a family reunion where my friend's wife gets up-to-date on the latest family news. RESPONSES KEN (KenMo) has a good dialog going about the Philadelphia Moores in response to HARRIET (HarrietMI). For additional information on the PA Moores, see Harriet's data under the Research section. *****I was interested in the insertion in MOORE NEWS/22, Part B about James Moore and Elizabeth Dickenson. I previously encountered an IGI reference to their marriage in 1759. I am trying to find information on my g-g-g-grandparents, James and Elizabeth Moore who were the parents of Samuel J. Moore, born in Philadelphia in February, 1765. I wrote to Salt Lake City to see if they could give me further information on the IGI reference. They suggested that I look in the Ancestral File, which I eventually did and came up with a Family Group Record for James and Elizabeth Moore about whom you submitted information. The people are the same, the dates are the same for the children, some of the places are slightly different. For example the AF gives: James Moore born about 1730 at Ballynacree, Ireland. (Is this a place in County Antrim?). It says that he died 1777 at Atglen, Chester, PA, and that he was married 5 Apr, 1759 at Sadsbury, Chester, PA. There are nine children as you listed all born at Atglen. There were six submitters although for only the first one, Melvin Rodney LIGGETT, has a film number given - Microfilm 1394472. The Ancestral File Nos. were:- James Moore - AFN:DZ2P-MR and for Elizabeth Dickenson:- AFN:787V-NJ. Elizabeth was born 13 Feb, 1739 at Piques Creek, Chester, PA, and her parents were Joseph Dickenson and Elizabeth Miller You may already have all of this information. If not, and you do not have ready access to Ancestral File, I can send you a hard copy of the print-out that I obtained from our library which had the CD's for the Ancestral File available for public access. Just send me your address. Unfortunately this information was of no help in tracing my James and Elizabeth Moore except to eliminate another potential lead. If you find any thing on a James and Elizabeth Moore that had a son Samuel J. Moore born in Philadelphia in February, 1765, Please let me know. - - - - - - - - BOB MOORE (Patwarnes), Our 'response guru,' is back in business after a vacation of several weeks and catch up time on return home to Oklahoma. Note: This is the second incidence in this issue where Dutch ancestry is mentioned as a possible origin of a Moore family. See ADELAIDE'S New Member profile. *****At last, someone who mentions Peter Sr, and Peter Jr.....I don't think my Peter Sr and Peter Jr are the ones you are looking for but thought I would send the info to you anyway.....just file it in your records....never know when it might prove useful.... Source: Carroll 1765-1815 (Carroll County, Virginia) by John Perry Alderman (deceased) page 133-134 " There is a traditional genealogy which states that Peter Moore was a Dutch immigrant, but that is to be doubted. What is known is that he came to the lower reaches of Big Reed Island Creek about 1803 and appears on the Grayson tax records of 1804. His son Charles Moore had been born about 1798 in Sullivan County TN (record of Charles second marriage in 1854 in Carroll clerk's office) so it can be presumed that Peter had lived there before migrating eastward to the New River settlement. "He bought 110 acres from Zachariah Stanley in 1809 (Grayson deed book 2-492) It is likely that he had settled on the property when he first came and had paid Stanley in installments. There are not many records of Peter; he does not appear in the early court records and there is no mention of him in the will book although he seems to have died in the county a little before 1820. "No list of children is found in the Grayson records. It is known from the marriage records of Charles that he is was one of the children of and the same record indicates that Peter's wife was named Jane. Charles lived in the county all his life and is the ancestor of the Moores in the Pine Creek area. There was a Henry Moore taxed in 1815 who was likely another son and a Peter Moore who married Rebecca Breeding in 1815 in Wythe County is said to have been another. The younger Peter was a veteran of the War of 1812 and had a brother Ammon who was in the militia with him and who died at Norfolk. In summary, there would seem to be four sons: Charles, Peter Jr., Ammon and Henry. Very probably there were other children whose names are unknown today." Note #1: I have a copy of Peter Moore, Jr's settlement of estate of Ammon Moore...provided no additional information Note #2..I checked the Carroll Court House for a copy of Charles Moore's second marriage...they couldn't find it...Mr. Alderman died last summer and they did not know where he found the record or where he put it after he recorded it for the book.... Note#3..I plan or ordering a copy of the deed of 1809 for my files Note #4: Peter Moore Jr and his wife Rebecca Breeding are my direct line.... They lived in Pulaski County and were the grandparents of my paternal grandmother Lucinda Belle Moore Nunn. Note #5: Peter Jr. was born about 1794 so I fear this set of Peter Sr/Peter Jr are are not yours.... Note #6: Lee....Harry Silcox (HSilcox) is my cousin and we are working on the family genealogy together.
