MOORE NEWS Volume I November 27, 1996 Issue 33 SALUTATIONS I was trying to think of something clever to say about Thanksgiving and thought I should tell you about the FIRST THANKSGIVING - the one that took place in Virginia before the Pilgrims landed. Then I received a greeting from BOB MOORE (Patwarnes) and thought it was a much better thought to pass along. HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT THANKSGIVING, AND THIER FAMILIES ARE ALL IN GOOD HEALTH. . . . . . .Then someone else sent me the following, so I thought I rethought my first thought. *****Happy Thanksgiving to all. And now the question of the day . . . where was the first Thanksgiving in America?. . . . . according to the story touted at Berkely Plantation (the Harrison home on the James River ). . . . . . . . The first Thanksgiving took place on the Berkely One Hundred in 1619, one year before the pilgrims landed at Plymouth. The settlers called themselves the Berkely Company named after Berkely Castle. The truth is, Virginia seemed to have everything except good public relations people and book publishers. How is it that Massachusetts got to be 'first' in everything Virginia did first! NEW MEMBERS ANN GABBERT (AGabbert ) *****I have been doing genealogy for about 2 years. When I started, both my family and my husband's family knew grandparents and maybe great grandparents, but that was all. I got interested in tracking down the family through an e-mail letter about a family reunion and the whole thing has snow balled into a definitely time-consuming hobby that I truly enjoy. I have noticed that the direction of my searches has changed within the last year or so, and instead of just getting bare bones information such as name and dates, I have begun searching for the information that fleshes out the people and makes them seem real to me. I tend to skip around and work on various areas of the family as the whim and sources of information comes to me. My Moore line is in my husbands family and unfortunatelyl I currently only have information that I found in a family history, Neal Per Stripes. I would like to extend the line and share information with others researching the same family. Here is the family as I have it. Edward Moore appeared on the census in 1810 in Washington Co, Alabama. He signed a will in Tuscaloosa Co, AL. He died in Tuscaloosa Co, AL. He was married to Sarah. Edward Moore and Sarah had the following children: 3 i. Yabitha Cecil Moore. 4 ii. Martha N Moore. 5 iii. Susannah Moore. 6 iv. Sarah Isscacil Moore. +7 v. Lucretia Moore. 8 vi. Elizabeth Pickard Moore. +9 vii. Bennett Wright Moore. THIRD GENERATION 7. Lucretia Moore. She was married to Franks. 9. Bennett Wright Moore was born on 4 Aug 1792 in Tuscaloosa Co, AL (?). He appeared on the census in 1820 in Maury Co TN. He appeared on the census in 1840 in Choctaw Co., MS. He died on 17 Feb 1863. He was married to Mary (Polly) Rankin (daughter of James Rankin) on 29 Mar 1816 in Maury Co TN. Mary (Polly) Rankin was born on 26 Jul 1797. She died on 2 Sep 1865. Bennett Wright Moore and Mary (Polly) Rankin had the following children: +10 i. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Moore. +11 ii. Marion Moore. +12 iii. Felix Moore. +13 iv. Nancy Matilda Moore. +14 v. Leanna H. He died on 29 Jun 1899 in Belfountain, Miss. He was married to Mary Jane Wills on 24 Jan 1860 in Belfountain, Miss. 12. Felix Moore was born in 1818. He was married to Sarah Sealy. 13. Nancy Matilda Moore was born on 26 Aug 1824. She died on 10 Apr 1881. She was married to William McCain. 14. Leanna H. Moore was born on 18 Feb 1830 in Webster Co, MS or Alabama. She died on 28 Oct 1906. She was buried after 28 Oct 1906 in North Union Cemetary, BelFountain, MI. She was married to John Glen Neal (son of John Garrett Neal and Malissa Spurlin) on 7 Sep 1848. John Glen Neal was born on 11 Nov 1829 in Covington Co., Ala. He died on 1 Dec 1864 in Franklin, Robertson, TN. He was a confederate soldier, killed during Civil War. Leanna H. She was married to John Anderson McCain. QUERIES Marilyn (GNEOLOG) *****I have such a little to go on I'm embarassed to ask - but nothing ventured, nothing gained. I have (from an ancestral file in SLC a Lydia Moore who married Warrenton King Spiller probably in Va. their granddaughter was born 1777 so it would have been early 1700s I would imagine. The Spiller family went to Robertson co,Tn where Lydia Spiller, daughter of Warrenton King Spiller II and Leanna Nichols was born. Does anyone have any Spillers around.
