MOORE NEWS Volume I December 4, 1996 Issue 34 SALUTATIONS Please help me solve a technical problem that will only get worse if it's not fixed. New members want to obtain back issues of MOORE NEWS. I don't blame them, I'd also want to know if information I needed was sitting in issue no. 10 when I subscribed at issue no. 28. I store MOORE NEWS issues in a single file, so I should be able to transmit it in a quick attached file operation; but often on the other end, the file can't be opened -- the same thing happens in reverse when you send me an attached file. It isn't feasible for me to send back issues one by one. The other solution would be to US mail hard copy back issues for which I could charge a fee to cover costs, and could even dress it up a little to make it look more presentable. But the recipient would not have it in digitalized form which is more convenient and useful. Sandy Sanford (GOLFOGEY) suggested some time ago that I switch this to a Home Page operation. Being unfamiliar with the technique and fearful that we would lose the sense of belonging I feel we now possess if we went to a Home Page, I've resisted; but we do continue to grow - we're moving toward 250 subscribers now - and it may be that we need to move to a different presentation. What can we do? I don't have the technical know-how to come up with a solution that makes sense for everyone. Help! NEW MEMBERS CARROL B. COSLOW (CBC174) *****State of residence is Colorado (that's where I pay taxes, but I'm really a Kentuckian) and I have an alternate email address: < hugono@bouldernews.infi.net > Earliest known Moore ancestors with dates: My paternal ggg-grandparents -- Joseph Moore (b. ca 1775 in PA), married Mary A. They are in the 1850 Washington Co. KY census, but not the 1860. Daughter Lucy Moore married Steven Colvin. My maternal gggg-grandparents: Joseph Moore (b. 1784 d. 1856), married Mary Shirley (b. ca 1778 d. Apr 21, 1853). I wouldn't be terribly surprised if both these sets of ancestors are the same couple, but I can't prove it. - - - - - - - - - - - - JIM BOB SWAFFORD (JIMBOBTX@AOL.COM) Just wanted to pass along some information on how important it is to utilize other resources when doing family reserch. In issue 29 of MOORE NEWS I was needing help with finding a connection between Fannie Bates Moore and a possible cousin named John Henry Moore. The family history that I had available to me only mentioned that they were cousins. I did however have family history on Fannie B. Moore such as her parents, uncles, aunts and one brother....on the other hand, I had no mention of John Herny Moore or who were his parents, where...... So about the same time I sent my request in to the MOORE NEWS, I also sent a request for family information to the Fayette county Tx hertiage museum and achives La Grange, Tx where both John Henry and Fannine Bates had ived....Week later I received a packet which included a family group sheet of John Henry Moore, listing his spouse, parents and children. His father Col. Armstead Moore was the brother of Robert Moore, Fannie Bates' father....It was a thrill to make a connection....It was also interesting in re-reading earlier family history, that in the Eastland's family Bible (Fannie B. married Thomas B. Eastland) I discovered Fannie B. had a brother named Armstead Moore, obviously a namesake for Col. Armstead Moore. My cost from the Fayette Museum and archives was $8.00...I sent them $10.00. Now I'd like to introduce the new Moore's I have aquired: 1. Col. Armstead Moore and his wife Tabitha Adams Bowen the parents of John Henry Moore. 2. John Henry Moore b. 13 Aug 1800, married Eliza Cummins b. 23 Apr. 1809 Tenn., died 25 Feb 1877. 3. Their Children > William Bowen Moore b. 1828 Texas >Tabitha Bowen Moore b. 1832 Fayette, Texas >Eliza Frances Moore b. 1837 Fayette, Texas >John Henry Moore Jr. b. 1842 Fayette, Texas >Robert J Moore b. 1842 Fayette, Texas >Maryereline Moore b. 1844 Fayette, Texas Should anyone be interested I also received a family group sheet for John Henry Moore Jr. and his wife Mary J Young. - - - - - - - - - - - - Date: 3 1996 9:54 AM EDT From: JPiotro461 Subj: Re: MOORE NEWS PARTICIPANTS' LIST To: JBrown7169 cc: DENISE (JPiotro461) ***** I've been working on my MOORE Family Line for about 3 years. Unfortunately, it is one part of the family where very little is known and progress has been slow. I would be especially interested in corresponding with anyone who is doing research on MOORE's in Hamilton County, Ohio and Pike/Adams/Morgan Counties of Illinois. So far I have very little information to go on, but here it is: James Moore, b: 1818, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio Based on research into the 1820 Federal Census for Hamilton County, Ohio (and the assumption the perhaps the family resided in the area from 1818 until 1820), I have found a short list of possible fathers for James Moore. This is the list of Heads of Households who are listed as having children under the age of 5 years in the 1820 Census. If anyone is researching these men, I would appreciate any information regarding information about their families and the possibility of a son by the name of James Moore. There is now a history, "Rabun County Georgia and Its People, Vol.1" published by the Rabun County Heritage Committee in 1992, Second Printing 1996, which can be found in the Rabun County Library. There may be some copies available through the Rabun County Historical Society, P.O. Box 921, Clayton, GA 30525. Mrs. Monteen Keener Watts has also written two books: "Chips Off The Same Block" and "Chips Off The Same Block II" which concern the Keener and Watts (and other) families. I don't know if any of these last are available or not, but the historical society would know. Concerning William and Rebecca Moore, I don't know anything more than you! We will have to work on this. If they are brother and sister, the SC location could help to locate their parents. The reason the Tomassee/Tamasee area in SC is significant is that Eli Ritchie married Rebecca Moore on the Keowee River, near Tamasee, Pickens District, SC. If your William has a link to that area, it would follow that there could be some realtionship to Rebecca. Other than the marriage data, I don't much else about the Tamassee area connection. The Ritchies were in SC for quite awhile, before Eli migrated to Rabun County. I would love to know more about your Hiram Van Buren Moore and his family. As to the Garland surname; it is impossible to research an old Rabun County name without researching all the others! I have run into it, but we don't have a direct connection. Would you like to have a run down on Rebecca Moore and Eli Ritchie's family? I will be glad to send the information to you. My husband and I live in the Southern part of Rabun County, near Lakemont. If you would like the information on Rebecca's family, let me know. I look forward to hearing from you. If you're in the area, we're in the book! - - - - - - - - - - - - PAM (PamelaKA) is responding for Florence Bilbro, an offline reader. *****"George P. It goes on to say "his will is recorded in Charleston SC dated Aug. 9, 1780 - proved may 28, 1784. He mentions his wife Barbara, and sons John, Lenard, and Willam Harrison, a monor." It goes on to say that the above is "from abstracts of Moore Records of South Carolina 1694 - 1865 by Jane Reville, page 14.) If I understand correctly what the way this history reads, William Moore was the fourth son of James Moore the first, who was son of Roger Moore. I am from a long line descended from William Moore's son John Moore, who was born in 1758. I haven't verified any of this myself; it came to me from my grandmother who died several decades ago, so I cannot ask her where she got it. P 10 Dec 1804 MOORE MISCELLANY Anyone searching for their family's history eventually succombs to trying to use the sequence of given names in a family as a search tool. Sometimes, the only way an ancestor (especially a female) can be proved in one of Virginia's burned counties is to link them to their parent by applying a traditonal naming pattern. Millicent V. Craig, the author of this article, is the North American Secretary of the Dalton Genealogical Society. Many of our VA/NC Moore families also have a Dalton line. Millicent is is the American representative of the English Dalton Journal. The annual fee is small and Daltons will find it to be an interesting addition to their family history. Millicent can be contacted by email at: < Millicenty@aol.com > ***** IMPORTANCE OF GIVEN NAMES Names can be quite helpful in recognizing ancestors. It was a practice in many countries to honor their relatives by naming their children after them. This was a very common practice in England and given names were carried down from generation to generation. Each major Dalton line had its own set of names. In Lancashire County, England, the predominant Dalton given names were: William, Robert, Thomas, James, John, Richard, Edward for the males; and Mary, Ellen, Jane, Margaret, Ann, Elizabeth, Sarah for the female offspring. Quite frequently, the hierarchial system for naming was observed. The first-born male was named after the paternal grandfather and the first-born female was named after the maternal grandmother. The second-born male was named after the maternal grandfather and the second-born female was named after the paternal grandmother. The remaining children were named after uncles and aunts, often according to age. This knowledge can be helpful in going backwards to identify family members, especially grandparents. In the case of a child born out of wedlock, this pattern was not usually observed. It was also not uncommon for a couple to have one or two children before they married and the pattern was not observed in these cases either. They were generally named after maternal aunts or uncles who were lower in the hierarchy. And incidentally these children, especially if they were females, often did not assume the surname of their father but carried their mother's maiden name throughout their lives. Sons were more likely to receive their father's surname. Children born after the marriage, generally were named in the hierarchial order. When a given name occurs that is quite unusual, this name can be very helpful, especially in trying to isolate families from the baptismal records or from the English Censuses where Dalton families all carry the same names. If is had not been for the odd name of "Herbert," my search would have been much more difficult than it was. __________________________________________________ MOORE NEWS: Compiled from email and other sources Distributed by Joyce Browning cJBrown7169@AOL.com 4 December 1996
