Each issue is compiled from information I received 2 to 3 weeks prior to the date of issue, a reflection of the volume of information submitted. Thanks again to everyone for your support and your enthusiasm. MOORE NEWS will distribute a special Christmas issue which will include "A Grandfather's Story," about a unique Moore family and "A Grandmother's Story," of Christmas Past. Querys should be submitted directly to me for distribution through the publication. HARRY SILCOX (H Silcox) sends information about a southwestern Virginia research source: ******I went up to Salem Va and met with Dr. S H Landreth about the Moores. He had very little but he did invite a lady Moore. We exchanged some info and a whole lot of questions. It was not too profitable, but it did confirm info that we both had. Landreth has written several genealogy books on families in SW Virginia. I told him I would ask you to mention these Family names and his address in the newsletter. So: S H Landreth, 17 Lemay Dr., Salem, Va 24153 - P 540 342 9398 Family names, Landreth, Reece, Hopkins, Quesenberry, Smythers, Sowers, Wickham, Gilmer, Lindsey, and Lovell. His Quesenberry book allowed Judy Alley and me to go back 12 generations. The lady is Mrs. Ardennia Moore Reed, 2521 Chatham St, NW. Roanoke, Va. 24012. Ph 540-362-4266 Her interest is Amon Moore and Catherine Katie Phillips. She has quite a bit of info and I plan to spend some time with her later. NEW MEMBERS SUSAN (Susan5787) *****I am very new at this and am just beginning to look for my Moore family. My grandfather is Hardy Moore, b. Oct. 16,1881 in Georgia. He married Amanda Ferguson in 1903. His father was John Henry Moore, said to have been General Lee's chaplin when he surrendered. He was married to a woman with the last name of Robinson. Besides Hardy, his other sons were George, John Jr. and Matthew. Any help would be greatly appreciated. - - - - - - - - CHERYL (Etaine) ******I reside currently in Maryland, but I have family living in South Carolina and some relatives in Georgia. I remember family reunions in Alapaha, Georgia. I am not a Moore by blood relationship. My father was reared by his aunt (Mervin Stoy SHAW) and uncle (Dr. Henry Barney MOORE) Dr. Moore was a pharmacist in Tifton, Georgia. He had, I believe, two brothers, Benjamin Moore and I cannot recall the name of the other one. Dr. Moore had at least one sister that I can recall, Nan. She was a nurse. Dr. and Mrs. Henry Moore had a son, Henry, Jr., who died without children, and a daughter, Dorothy Louise MOORE Reader, who married Albert Reader and adopted his three children (they had no children as a result of their union). Aunt Dorothy was in a nursing home somewhere in the Atlanta, Georgia the last time I heard anything from a friend down there who checked on her whereabouts for me. So, as you can see I have a LITTLE information, but I would like a lot more. - - - - - - - - STEPHEN MOORES (stevem@ncia.com) ******I have been researching this family of mine for so long now and coming up at the same dead ends. All of my grandparents are gone now. I tried to get information from my great aunts before they died, but they seemed to be hiding some family secrets that they took to their graves with them. All the rest of us can do is speculate. Oh well. I hale from Mount Vernon, Washington. We're about 60 miles north of Seattle. My family name is Moores. The first Moores came to this valley in 1876. His name was James Harvey Moores. He was my great grandfather's brother. James left his parents and siblings in Quebec, Canada in 1872, traveled to Minnesota where he stayed for 4 years, then on to Washington State when he met up with his uncle Thomas Moores. The earliest Moores that I have information on is Nathaniel b. 28 Apr 1820 in Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada. Died 24 Jun 1904 in Canada. Married Margaret Ann Sutherland on 8 Jan 1846 in Campbellton, New Brunswick (b. 19 Mar 1827 Nashwaaksis, New Brunswick, d. 3 Nov 1893 in Canada). Nathaniel's father may have been Thomas, but I have never proven that. This information came from my great aunt's memories. Nathaniel and Margaret had 13 children. The first 6 were born in New Brunswick, I'm assuming in the Campbellton area. They were: Christy Ann, b. 26 Feb 1847; Olive Grace, b. 15 Jun 1848; James Harvey, b. 26 Jan 1850; Ezilphia Matilda, b. 22 Aug 1851; Elizabeth Hanna, b. 29 Jan 1853; Satira Jane, b. 23 Jul 1854/5. The next 7 children were born in Quebec. My great grandfather Nathaniel Jr. was born 8 Dec 1857 in Matapedia, Quebec; William Alfred, b. 23 Nov 1858; John Thomas, b. 1 Feb 1860, Mahala Belle, b. 9 Dec 1861; Herman L., b. 13 Aug 1864; Clarence Hamilton, b. 24 Sep 1866 and Sarah Alice, b. 8 Nov 1868.After James Harvey homesteaded in Mount Vernon, he wrote his brother Nathaniel and sister Satira about the great valley he had found and they in turn came out west and settled here too. I don't know what happened to the rest of the family. I do, however, have some death dates of all of them. I hope that this isn't too lengthy for you. I'm just desperate to find some kind of a link to my family. The records in Canada are kind of poor during the early days unless I'm just not looking in the right places. I am only on AOL for a short trial period. Whether I stay or not depends on what kind of responses I get to my queries. My alternative internet e-mail address is stevem@ncia.com. Chuck has set up this lineage so that it adapts well to the AOL format. He hugs the left margin and presents his lineage horizontally rather than in a vertical line. The journey from England to America was fraught with schedule delays, arrivals at the wrong destination, lost luggage, spoiled cargo, and add to that: turbulent seas, hurricanes, bad food, bad water, lack of privacy, little or not sleeping comfort, disease, death, pirates, treachery and skullduggery of all kinds. Read on . . . Source: English Adventurers 11 May 1625. Thomas Hamon of Limehouse, Middlesex, sailor aged 25. In 1624 he went as boatswain of the Unity, Mr.Tobias White, for a voyage to Virginia, Canada or New England. The ship was owned by Henry Beale and Peter Leonard who freighted her to Humphrey Rastell and ( ) Griffith. She left the Thames on 9 April 1624 and took up a course for Virginia but, since the year was far spent, Rastell changed the orders and directed White to sail for New England where she arrived on 24 June. There she made ready to carry her passengers on to Virginia, but Rastell then embarked them on another vessel on which he sailed himself. Three months after his departure, the Unity was ready to leave New England for London, but Captain Wolverstone received orders from Rastell that she was to proceed instead to Virginia. On 21 November 1624 the Unity sailed on a course for Virginia with 6 passengers from New England and collected bread and provisions from Mountheginge Island. She then encountered contrary winds for most of a month, at the end of which all hope of reaching Virginia was abandoned and course was set for England. She arrived back in Blackwell at the end of February 1625. October 1635. Deposition of Henry Williamson of St. Dunstan in the East, London, upholsterer (draper) aged 15. In October 1635 Thomas Moore arranged with John Thierry for the transpiration of himself and his servants, William Kinge and John Mutchell, to Virginia on the Constance which he was informed was as well found and victualled as any ship which went there. He agreed on a price of L6 per head payable at Gravesend. The ship failed to make the voyage because of which Moore's servants were left behind in England and Thierry refused to refund the passage money. The deponent was a witness to the payment to Thierry of L40 at the Christopher Inn in Gravesend. 25 July 1637. Deposition of Philip Callow of Bristol, cooper aged 20. He joined the Blessing of Falmouth, Mr. Philip Luxon, at Padtow, Cornwall, for a voyage to Virginia as her steward. While she was at James Town he forbade the Master to break open cases on board but despite this he opened and consumed a case of strong waters and forced the deponent to drink with him. It was discovered that the crew had cut a way into the ship's hold to get at the drink. On the return voyage some of her company deserted at Kinsale, Ireland, and at Falmouth thereby causing her tobacco to be neglected and spoiled. 24 Feb 1643. Mr. Edward Moore, Master of the Gabriel and Elinor, now riding in the road of said County (Northampton) requested of the board regarding the transportation of certain persons being in Number 42 whereof they were bound by Indenture to Mistris Traughton of St. Marys in Maryland and one being dead. The Board's opinion was that said Mr. Moore write to Mrs. Traughton to inquire whether she will pay for transportation of above parties or not according to Mistris Poultney's agreement. Upon her satisfactory answer, Mr. Moore to make delivery of the promisses remaining or otherwise to make prizement and sale thereof for his own satisfaction. 5 April 1652. Deposition of Henry Groome of Redriffe, Surrey, aged 48. He was Master's mate of the Adventure, Mr. Thomas Graves, which left Boston, New England, for London on 31 December 1651. On passage she was damaged by violent storms and had to be refitted before she arrived in London on 4 March 1652. There were 40 men in her company and she carried 80 passengers from New England who were safely delivered in London. Her owner was Francis Willoughby of New England. 5 April 1725. Deposition of James Williams of Boston, New England, mariner aged 26. In July 1724 at Amsterdam he shipped on the galley George, Mr. Oliver Fourneau, a Frenchman, for a voyage to Santa Cruz where she loaded beeswax, copper and other goods. Four months out of Santa Cruz, 5 of her company rose up against Fourneau who was shot with a pistol and thrown overboard. The surgeon John Guy, the mate Bonadventure Jelfs, and the Master's clerk or supercargo, all had their throats cut while they lay in their hammocks and were also thrown overboard. She was then made a pirate ship and renamed the Revenge. John Smith, who had been her mate and gunner, being the only one left who understood navigation, was given command and the cook was appointed gunner. They then took a sloop of Poole named the Delight, Mr. Thomas Wise, which was bound to Cadiz from Newfoundland, the Batchelor which was laden with timber, and a French vessel bound from Cadiz to France. The deponent was obliged to remain on board during all this time but then, having quarreled with one of the pirates, John Winter, was put aboard a small Bristol ship together with John Brown and John Bembrick and carried to Lisbon where he was taken on board the Argyle. He never had any share in the pirate's money of plunder except that he bought the surgeon's scarlet cloth jacket and breeches he now wears from the man who cut his throat. RESEARCH ADELAIDE SIRMONS (asirmons@cyberhighway.net) ***** I would like to tell you about another Moore I have found while I was working on the Entrekin line of my family. I now have Ruth Moore b. Jan 7, 1834 Carroll co. Ga. m. to William Entrekin. Her father was George William Moore m. to Martha Gordy. The only date I have connected to Ruth's parents is her birth date. I believe Martha Gordy's parents to be Peter Gordy and Ruth Wilson. I am beginning to notice is the repeat first names. Ruth seems to be a name carried down through this particular line all the way from Ruth Wilson to my Aunt Ruth who would have been her gggg granddaughter. And I have noticed William was a popular name, also. - - - - - - - - JIM SCREWS ( SCREWSJ@platte.unk.edu) ******I have quit a few pages of info, so I will send a little at a time.
