MOORE NEWS Volume II January 22, 1997 Issue 5 SALUTATIONS Lots of new subscribers! Some will go over to the next issue. Welcome all -- the arrival of new Moores keeps us alert and on our toes . . . a little like Grandmothering a Grandfathering . . have to stay alert for those three-year olds. This issue includes a lovely tribute to the preservation of ancestral sites. It started with a discussion about the Disney acquisition of 3,000 acres in Prince William County, Northern Virginia, preparatory to opening a theme park The issue of preservation became national in scope and Disney retreated. Read Margy Ball Mile's description of her visit to an ancestor's home and you will find yourself stepping closer to the cause of preservation - and not just a little envious of Margy. Moores from New England and Canada: I wish we produced more family history for you, and admit to being a bit defensive about it. The fact is, MOORE NEWS is the product of contributions of subscribers. Every bit of New England and Canada information received is distributed right away. I've wondered many times if the demographics of MOORE NEWS subscribers (over 300 now) reflects the origin of Moore families in the United States (and Canada). If so, then 85% of the Moores in the northern hemisphere look to five of the original thirteen colonies for their ancestry: Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and South Carolina. This proposition is even fairly easy to support on the basis of differences in the economies of the northeastern and southern parts of the country. In the south where the economy was based on agriculture, fresh new land was constantly being sought out and cultivated. In addition North Carolina and Virginia both used land grants in Tennessee and Kentucky as bounties to reward Revolutionary War soldiers. Comments invited. NEW MEMBERS KATHY (Frostypoo) *****My name is Kathy G. and I live in Columbus, GA. While I realize that most of you are researching several generations of MOORE's in the U.S., I was hoping you could help me. My great grandfather THOMAS MABEL MOORE was born in Cookstown, Ireland (County Atrium) in 1885. He immigrated to America at the age of 18 and married Lillian Dorrell in IL. Thomas had 16 brothers and sisters so there is a possibility that some of them immigrated with him. - - - - - - - - - - DALE PIGOTT (pigott@king.vc.cc.tx.us) *****My mother is a MOORE from Columbia Co, FL. Her earliest proven MOORE ancestor is James Moore (b ~1755; d Dec 1840, Camden Co, GA). His wife may have been Mary HARRIS (b ~1761, Glynn Co, GA; d Liberty Co, GA). James had six sons - Arthur T., Jacob, James, William, Erwin, and John. Arthur T. Moore (my ancestor) (b 1777; d ~May, 1837, Camden Co, GA) was a veteran of the War of 1812. In applying for a disability pension for injuries resulting from that war, he stated that he was born in West Florida but moved to Georgia while an infant. I am guessing that James Moore may have lived in Florida temporarily as a means of avoiding portions of the Revolutionary conflict. I am interested in finding information about parentage, place of birth, etc for James Moore as well as verification of his wife's identity. I believe that the majority of the children were born in Greene Co GA. Burnette and Rebecca are buried in marked graves in the family cemetery as are several of their children (Greene Co.Ga). My great grandfather and great grandmother are also buried there in unmarked graves. My Grandfather and Grandmother are buried in Stephens, Oglethorpe Co., Ga in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The wife of William Alpheas Moore, Mary Jane Davis; was my Grandmother Ilene Young's Aunt. The sister of her Mother Lucy Pope Davis. A Barnard Moore married in Wilkes Co. Ga. Frances Coleman on June 13, 1818. He is also listed as having married Rebecca Billingslea on June 27, 1811. Now there could have been two Rebecca Billingsleas' ( Rebecca was spelled Rebeca on one entry) or did the clerk make a mistake. I do feel that Barnard was Burnette's brother. Can anyone help me find out anything else about this family? - - - - - - - - - - BARBARA DODD (BarbDodd2) *****My earliest Moore was Goodrich Moore b. ca.1775 in Va. m. Nancy Eidson on Dec. 28, 1791. He had at least four brothers, Thomas Austin, Joshua A and William. Austin m. Sally Eidson and Joshua m. Milly Eidson. In about 1800 Goodrich and Nancy moved to Iredell Co., N.C. Joshua and Milly moved in about 1810 and three of the wife's brothers Barnabas, Edward and Joseph Eidson also moved to N.C. in about 1810. Goodrich and Nancy had at least 11 children: Thomas, Jane, Rebecah, Polly, Josiah, Mildred, Martin, Goodrich Horatio, Nancy, and Sarah. Josiah Moss Moore is my ancestor. He married Mary W. Patterson on Feb. 12, 1829 Her parents were Charles C. Patterson and Jane Eidson, so they were probably cousins. They had at least nine children most born in Bedford Co. Va. maybe all were. They were Thomas, Ann, James, Elizabeth, Charles, Sarah, Wesley, Robert and Edward of which Charles McKinley Moore is my ancestor he was born June 14, 1836 and m. Oct. 3, 1860 to Ann Layne b. Dec. 9, 1836. they had 11 children: Emma, David, Rowena, Sallie, Anna, Mary, Eugene, Edwin, Ottaway, Owen and Charles of which Eugene Wesley Moore is my ancestor He was b.June 6, 1875 m. Dec. 14, 1901 to Linnie Foster Eastman. My father John Edward Moore was their son. I have more information on some of these and would like to get more, especially who were Goodrich Moore's parents, if you have anything or want something, contact me. QUERIES CHRYSTAL KOEHLER (Chrystaltx@aol.com) ****My gr. gr. Aunt Vada Hardin Moore, b. in Clay Co. Ark, the daughter of James Jackson Hardin and Ida May Toombs. She married a W.A. In the 15 January newsletter, SANDRA GAGE (SGage83192)mentioned a Sharick Moore who paid tax in Fayette Co., Kentucky on February 26, 1790. I have looked all over for Shadrack Moore (b. 21 January 1775...I know not where; d. 30 September 1858). His daughter, Delinda/Belinda Moore (b. 26 October 1817 in ?) married Lemuel Osker Beaver. Their son was James Simpson Moore Beaver (b. 2 February 1838 in Giles Co., Tennessee; d. 9 December 1910 in Lone Oak Co., Arkansas). Could it be that Shadrack Moore and Sharick Moore are the same man? Does anyone out there have information on a Sharick Moore who paid tax in Kentucky in 1790? RESPONSES JOHNEDA TINNIN LEE (jdm1intx@airmail.net). Johneda subscribed to TALIAFERRO TIMES, which I also edit. Remembering that the Tinnin/Tinnon name has appeared in MOORE NEWS, I asked her to share with us infomation about her Tinnin family - to which she generously consented. Thanks so much Johneda. ******My Tinnin ancestry goes back to a brick wall. My gr-grandfather John Martin Tinnin was born in Hood County, Texas in 1860. According to his death certificate, his father was Christopher Tinnin born in Missouri and his mother was Sarah Herring born in Parker County, Texas. I have not been able to get past John Martin. I have been in contact with many other members of the Tinnin family and continue to help them and hopefully someday the wall will come down. The Tinnin name is almost 100% certain to be Irish according to the other researcher. The Moore family is connected with the Tinnin line in more than one instance where a Moore married a Tinnin. I have not seen the combination Tinnin Moore but once on the internet. I would bet that is started when there was a marriage. You can add my name to the list because I do have quite a bit of information in my computer and the cemetery list. Who knows, maybe I'll find out something I need along the way. - - - - - - - - - - - - BILL MOORE (Billbmoore) ******MARILYN (GNEOLOG), you do not mention dates for the Jeremiah Moore that you are trying to connect to the Spillers, so I may be offering you a lot of info that is off by a generation or two. But here is what I know about one Jeremiah Moore* [who we believe to be the brother of our Jesse]* b. 6/7/ 1746 near Dumfries, Pr Wm Co, VA father: William mother: Angelina French occupation: Baptist Minister - well documented in several books and references. He was famous, & infamous w/ the Brits, who only belatedly and reluctantly granted him a preaching license. Wife: Lydia Renno/Renoe/Reno [m. when he was age 19]. Lydia's father was J. Francis Reno, from the same area where the Moores and Spillers also apparently lived, originally in the Cedar Run / Slaty Run area of Pr Wm CO., north of the western end of now the Quantico Marine Base. Children: Jesse [b. 1776]; Francis [1768]; John [1770]; Angelina French [1772]; Tabitha [1774]; Elizabeth French [1777]; Ammishaddi [1778]; William French 1781]; Margaret French [1783]; Elizabeth L. I will keep an open eye. - - - - - - - - - - - - Navy PM@aol.com ******I wrote a while back seeking info on Morris NJ Moore's during the Rev War. I made my connection with the help of Paula Radwanski (as follows). This info came from "Rev John Moore of Newtown Long Island and Some of his Descendants," by James W. Moore. Rev. John Moore (ca. 1620 England-17 Sept. 1657 Newtown, Queens Co., NY) buried Ancient Town Cemetery, Newtown. married ca. 1641 to Margaret Howell (bapt. 25 Nov. 1622 Marsh Gibbon, Buckinghamshire, England - d. after Mar. 1661??) [she md. 2nd Francis Doughty in 1660 - 1661 is the last record I found her listed but she probably lived quite a while after that??]. John and Margaret had: John, Gershom, Samuel, Joseph and Elizabeth p. 357 Joseph Moore md. Sarah Halsey. Joseph d. ca. 1726 and will was dated 1 Mar. 1723. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas & Mary Halsey. The will of Thomas is dated 3 Aug. 1688. She was granddaughter of Thomas and his wife (not name), who was murdered by the Indians. Thomas was one of the 20 original settlers of Southampton. He died 27 Aug. 1678. Joseph and Sarah had: Joseph, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ruth, Abigail and Mary p. 358 Ensign Joseph Moore Jr. md. Hannah Deming. Hannah (maiden name also spelled Diamond, Dimon) was d/o James (1646-13 Dec. 1721) and his wife Hannah James (d. 20 Sept. 1706 d/o Rev. His wife was Mary ___?___ who died Aug. 1706 and Thomas' will was dated 1682. Joseph & Hannah had: Daniel, Caleb and David p. 359 Daniel Moore (inscription tombstone: departed this life 10 May 1791 in 83rd year). He married Anne Sayre, d/o Capt. John) was daughter of Edward and Frances (Paxton) Howell. This line I can trace back through several generations in England and lots of ancestors on all kinds of families. The Howells do have an official coat of arms - and there is a very active Howell Family Assoc. Easier to just send charts for these people instead of trying to do in on line. My connection to this family is from Rev. John through his daughter Elizabeth who married ca. 1665 to Content Titus. The Francis that is apparently the father of my Elizabeth Moore Ball is; Francis Nathaniel "Nathan" MOORE, born 12 June 1777 and died 20 Aug 1863. He married Delilah WILLIAMS, born 14 Feb 1800 (neat birthday!) and died 5 June 1878. Supposedly they are both buried at Bolton Cemetery in Crawford Co., Ark. Their children were; (all 17 of them!) Margaret, Jackson, Sarah Elizabeth (*Mine), Crity (Charity?) Ann, Susan, Nathan, Jr., Benjamin F., Lucy, Mahala, Martin, Malinda, Francis Marion, McLewis, Roland, Hannah, William Wiley, and Delilah Jane. I am extremely glad that Disney was run off from your beautiful area [Northern Virginia]!! That sort of thing has increasingly become a plague. I have done some reading about and made small donations to a couple of efforts to stop "progress" from destroying some of our Civil War battlefields. I feel very strongly about this subject. I am thankful to the citizens of Fairfield Co. (specifically Clarendon) for protecting my Grandfather's (Moses Ball) property. Some years ago they (whoever "they" are) wanted to build a hospital on his property. Citizens banded together and raised a petition to stop it and have the homeplace preserved. They were successful. Doctors Hospital now sits on the land but the site was moved in order not to destroy the homesite and old spring. I visited Moses' place. The spring still flows and has the rock wall Moses built around it. A plaque has been put on it with his name. Even though it is only a few hundred feet from the emergency room doors----it is still there! The water from it flows into the most beautiful park-like setting! The forest is still there and it is now used as a nature preserve. I LOVED it. Also Moses' brother, John, who lived "next door" built a small house which is STILL there. I was able to walk through it and actually touch the hand hewn beams my ancestors cut and assembled. It was amazing! Also in the park is the spot where Moses Ball & George Washington marked a large white oak tree as a survey marker between their properties together. Vandals tried to destroy the site so the section of the tree is now preserved at the Public Library, also located on the Ball land (in Clarendon) and a concrete marker was installed at the spot and enclosed with a cage-like fence to protect it. I envy you being in Fairfax Co. Maybe it is just in my blood but if I could choose to live anywhere I want....it would be right there. Count it among your blessings. MOORE MISCELLANY ANNE TOWNSEND (ANNETO) ******I would like to pass this along about my Moore family, extracted from "The Moore Genealogy" by J. Montgomery Seaver, published in 1900. The Moore family has been prominent in the British Empire and United States, it's members having played in the important roles in war and peace. Family pride is a commendable trait and should be cultivated. All Moores have just cause to be proud of their family history and tradition. The English surnames Moore and Moor and the Scottish Muir are from a Saxon word meaning healthy ground and were very early taken by those who resided at the boggy heath or moor. Moor may also have been a contraction of O'Mora, Mordha's descendant. Mordha is derived from "mor", which means great or tall. The Anglo Saxon word "mar"-renowned, famous is probably also a source or the name. The medieval forms of Moore were Atte Mor or More, DeMora and Ad Moram. The old Norse form is Mor; the Dutch, Moor; Flemish, Morre; German, Mohr; Celtic, Morre or Atte-Moor. In Domesday Book, 1086, there is mentioned More of Devon, Worcester, Hereford and Norfolk. Nanie de la Mora came to England from Normandy with William the Conqueror. In 1213, Adam de la Mora was officially sent by King John of England to the King of Scotland, with a present of gyrfalcons. During the reign of Edward l, an Adam de la Mora lived in Ayrshire, and Moores descended from him live in Ayrshire and Lanarkshire today. In 1391, Sir Adam More was a knight, of the Laird of Rowallan, Andrew Mure (1391) was a brother of Elizabeth More, of Rowallan, wife of Robert, High Steward of Scotland, who became Robert l. Reginald de la More held an estate at Abercorn in Linlithgow. He was Chamberlain of Scotland (1329-1341). His son, Sir William More, lived at Abercorn. He had also a son Gilchrist More. Fraser's Chiefs of Grant, lll. pp. 68-70, mentions Mores in Strathhamon and Stratdee in 1527. On page 274, William Moir, Chamberlain on the estate of Mulben, 1622, is mentioned. On pp. 149-150 is mentioned the name of John Moir. In June 1612, John Moir left home near Glasgow, Scotland, and moved to Co. Antrim, North Ireland. He was encouraged to do so by King James l, of England, who hoped to quell the uprisings in Ireland, by sending over staid English and Scottish subjects. From two brothers, Sir Edward and Sir Thomas Moore, Knights, (younger descendants of the Moores of Moore Place, Co. Kent) who went over to Ireland, as soldiers of fortune, in the reign of Elizabeth, sprang the house of Drogheda, and the extinct house of Charleville. There are Moores' in every state of the Union. The Moore population of the British Empire is probably equal to that of the United States. It is estimated that at least eighty-five percent of the Moores' in America, who are church members, are of the Protestant faith. In a statement once made by Lysander Moore ( 1V, 5 ), in a newspaper article, he mentioned the fact that this Moore family trace it's ancestry back to the Norman Conquest. The Moore name is a proud heritage. ============================================================================== Back issues of MOORE NEWS available at: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/news ================================================================== MOORE NEWS: Compiled from email and other sources Distributed by Joyce Browning cJBrown7169@AOL.com 15 January 1997
