MOORE NEWS Volume II 23 January 1997 Issue 6 Extra SALUTATIONS Undelivered Mail: I just discovered an email problem which may not be a new one. I ran a flashmail session, noted that 5 or 6 emails were received; but when I opened the "Incoming Mail" file, only 1 of them - the last received - was there. So I went on line to check my "New Mail" file - nothing there either. Then I checked my "Mail You've Read" file - I had already read everything. Someone told me that the reason it's called Flash Session is that it's short for Flash and Burn Session. I don't think this is the first time it's happened. I almost always respond, if only to say "Got it" when you send something. From now on, I'll go online to collect my mail - don't think it happens then, at least I hope not. If you have sent information in the last few weeks and haven't heard from me or seen it in MOORE NEWS, please send it again because I may not have received it. Sorry for the inconvenience. - - - - - - - - - - - - This is a special issue to present New Member information to overcome our backlog. MOORE NEWS now has over 300 subscribers and is apparently widely advertised on www sites, messages boards, in libraries, etc. I think we're on to a good thing, folks, and the credit goes to each and every one of you who has contributed to the content during these last seven months. The hope is that most of you are finding others who connect to your family and are able to partner in your research efforts. Is this happening? There are three Moore ancestors who have been with us from Day One. Although there has been much partnering and serious, down and dirty, research, their parents still remain undiscovered. As you research, please keep these three Moores in mind and let us know if you run across them: JAMES MARION MOORE (b. 1811- NC): ******I have only been able to track my Moore Family, back to my Great Great Grandfather James Marion Moore, b. 13 May 1811, NC. The family moved about 1816 to Tennessee, and since there are so many James M. Moore's, I haven't yet found his parents. James married Rachael W. Patton abt 1829. The two older children were born in Tenn., and the other eight were born in Missouri. I have just proved that the city of Marionville, MO. was named after him. My middle name is the same as my GG Grandfather James Marion Moore, and my Grandfather Arthur Marion Atkinson on my mothers side. 1.James Marion and Rachael W. [Patton] Moore 2.John Patton and Mary Angeline [Elsey] Moore 3.George Sherman and Pearl [Overstreet] Moore This was George's 2nd Marriage. 4.Garold Jay and Vera L. [Atkinson] Moore (my parents) *****Known descendants: Patwarnes@aol.com, LadyBec@aol.com [may be a different James Marion] - - - - - - - - - - PETER MOORE (b. ca 1794 - Where?): My grandmother was Lucinda Belle Moore born 25 Jun 1864 (other records indicate Aug 1865), Delton, Pulaski Co Va died 14 Jul 1947 Pulaski, Va married James Riley Nunn 2 Mar 1886 in the living room of her father's home. Tradition has them falling in love at the local fair. Another version passed down is that he married her to get back at her father. Either way, they were not speaking to each other during the last years of their life together. My great-grandfather Crockett Moore was born about 1827. Death date unknown. He married Margaret Ann Quesenberry on 24 Sep 1846 in Pulaski Co. They had eight children...Lucinda, Gordon M (b. abt 1858), William B. (b. abt 1859) James A., Robert H. (born Jul 1868), Corilda (b. abt 1848), Elizabeth (b. abt 1851) and Albert (b. abt 1859). My great-great grandfather was Peter Moore Jr (born about 1794) who married Rebecca Breeding. My Great-great-great grandparents were Peter Moore Sr. and Jane ? ******Known descendants of Peter Moore: JudyAlley@aol.com and H Silcox@aol.com - - - - - - - - - - RODEHAM MOORE (ca1744-1811) Lived in Patrick Co, VA. He appeared first in Pittsylvania County (later Henry, then Patrick Co VA) about 1768. Either just before his wife's family moved to this area or soon after, he married Elizabeth Gallahue, daughter of William and Ann (Kenner) Gallahue of Prince William Co, VA. Widowed, Anne Kenner Gallahue married George Rowland and the family moved to Pittsylvania Co VA about 1765. William Alfred Moore, son of Rodeham and Elizabeth Moore, married Jane Dalton Hanby of Patrick Co VA. He died in Patrick Co VA in 1819. Some of their children lived in Patrick Co VA, Surry Co NC, and Hawkins TN. John Moore, another son of Rodeham and Elizabeth Moore, married Elizabeth Williams, daughter of John and Margaret (Edgeman) Williams. This family moved to Missouri. John and Elizabeth Moore had 10 children: Greenville, believed to have gone to Texas, Roadhame; Elizabeth; John Williams; Alfred; Ann; Gollahugh; Cynthis A.; Luetsey; and George Moore. The son, John Williams Moore, b. 12 Feb 1815, in East Tennessee. In 1838, he moved to Lawrence County, Missouri. He married Harriet R. Lebow, b. 19 June 1823. ******Known descendants of Rodeham and Elizabeth Moore: CAPT C@aol.com, JBrown7169@aol.com, holliday@ visuallink.com, plus two prolific offline contributors. NEW MEMBERS WALLACE H. MOORE (wally_moore@juno.com) ****My earliest known Moore is William Moore of Surry Co. NC, b. ca 1780 in VA, m. Mary ?? b. ca 1783 in VA. He is my ggg grandfather. The only child I know was James Moore b. 1824 in Surry Co. NC. James Moore was my gg grandfather and family stories have it that he was a prisoner of war during the Civil War. In the 1850 NC census William Moore and James Moore lived very close to each other as they were on the same census page. I have not been able to assemble any information on Williams family or children. Have no death date or burial whereabouts. James Moore was b. 4/8/1824 in Surry County. This means that William was in Surry Co. before the 1830 census. James married Anna Barbara Walker "Barbary" on 3/25/1847 in Surry Co. There is a Marriage Bond and the Bondsman was a P.H. Copelan, Bond # 606146430. I don't have a copy of it. This info came from my cousin in Alaska who is doing some work also. James Moore's inlaws were Samuel and Hulda Walker. Here is a list of James Moore's children in birth order: Mary Lilvina b. 1/14/1848, married a S.R. Brooker in 1877 Mahulda Elizabeth b. 1/15/1850, married Hezakiah Key in 1866 Sarah Emily b. 8/19/1851, married Hiram B. Lee in 1877 Thomas Jefferson b. 8/22/1853, married Marinda Jane Burnett in OR in 1/31/1878. This is my gg grandfather. Samuel William "Bill" b. 10/6/1858, married Mary Susan Banham? in 1878. Not sure of last name spelling. All of the children were born in Surry Co. NC. The obit. for Thomas, have a copy, says that he was born in Dobson, NC, so that may be a clue. The only thing I have is the census that says: North Division Stewart Dist. Surry Co.. Family Hist. say that James was prisoner during Civil War and died before or shortly after that war. The Thomas Moore obit also says that when Thomas was 12 (1865?) when he and his mother and family removed to Iowa and he lived there for 4 years. He left and went west arriving in Sacramento, CA in 1872. After remaining there for a time he went to Western Oregon where he was married to a Miss Marinda Jane Burnett, 31 Jan. 1878. He removed to Vancouver, WA, and later came to Calif. in 1896. Settled in Millville, CA then to Cottonwood, CA where he died in 1910. Oh yes, William Moore may also have had a son named Samuel Moore who at the time of the 1850 census was living with James Moore. At that time, Samuel Moore (44) and his wife, Mary (50) had 3 children Rebecca (9), Milley (8), and Joshua (6). - - - - - - - - - - - JANET STRICKLAND (okcanal@gate.net) ******I am a 58 yr old bookkeeper for a towing company in W. Palm Bch, Fl. I live on the Rim Canal on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. I think an alligator ate one of my large white ducks today. From my chair watching TV last nite I saw my brother-in-law gig a giant frog. I had to turn the sound up a little over the drone of the airboat engine. I drive 45 mins. to and from work each day. I began my genealogy quest by writing short stories about my two sisters, brother and myself in our youth. The young people of our family did not know the character or dispositions of their deceased grandparents and I thought it was important for them to "know" what they were like - hence the ancestor hunt. I live with my Lord and Savior Jesus and a dog named Ginger. We all get along well and life is good. From Bible pages: GGGrandfather Joseph V. She was born in Belmont County, Ohio. Her father was John Moore (born March 3, 1822) in VA. Her mother's name was Mary Ann (born February 6, 1830) in Belmont County, OH. She had one brother, Alfred (born about 1848) and possibly a sister, Oletha, (born about 1853). I am searching for a marriage record for him and Mary Ann that would show both their parents. They were likely married in Belmont County, OH, probably around 1846-7. I am just guessing, as Alfred, their first child, was two years old in the 1850 census. If anyone can help, I would gladly exchange research in Kansas. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SAM MOORE (RebelRomad@aol.com) ******I am researching the James Harvey Moore Sr. line. He was born 10 or 28 Sep 1827 or 1828. I think he was born in White County, TN. He may have been born in England before they came to America, I'm not sure. His father was Thomas (NMI) Moore and judging from the census records I think he was born between 1790 and 1800. I have no idea what Thomas Moore's wifes name was or where she was born or when she was born or when or where she died. They (Thomas and his wife) had another son, Simon Moore and three daughters, Cynthia Moore Delafield, Sara Moore Allen and Aggie Moore Millian. I do have some info on the girls' families, but all I have on Simon is that when they all moved to Louisiana (1845 or 1846), he moved on to south LA. I have a lot of info on James Harvey Moore Sr. I am also trying to find info on Kisey Bucanan, Vernie Edward Erwin, William Acy Graham, Austin Reed Smith and Cordie Gilliam. Most of my ancestors are from the LA, TX area. Any help anybody can give me on any of these searches would be very appreciate - - - - - - - - - - - - - - CHRISTINE MOORE SMITH ( csmith@in-motion.net) ******Hello! I have traced my Moore line back to my great-great-grandfather, William St. Clair Moore, who often signed himself William C. Moore. He was born in Kentucky on Dec. 23, 1796, and died in Boyle County, Kentucky, on August 19, 1867. A great-aunt's genealogy information says his father was Thomas Moore of Scotland. Family tradition is that he was a half-breed. On Nov. 6, 1834, he married Nancy Jane Owens, daughter of Jeremiah Owens, Jr., and Margaret Pitman/Pittman. Jeremiah was the nephew of Simon Kenton. William and Nancy had 11 children, and are buried in the family cemetery on the Moore homeplace on Kentucky Highway 34 in western Boyle County. Would appreciate any info. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SUSIE ( SLinAZ) ******Amos Vincent Moore was born Feb 4, 1823 or 1824 in Mooresville, AL. His father supposedly Achilles Moore who died in 1827 (I have had no luck tracing him). A.V. came to Texas about 1836-39 with his brother Mark -- both worked on newspapers in Houston, Tx. A. V. served in the Mexican American War and when discharged was shipped to LA. Before returning to TX, he met and married Nancy Cordelia Carter in LA in 1848. They lived there until about 1852 and then moved to Lavaca County Tx. He also served in the Civil War.
