Message from Christine: Sometimes you plod along for weeks wondering if you're making any progress - whether you're into researching a new line or editing a family newsletter. Then you receive a message from Christine and recapture that wonderful feeling that's 'all's right with the world' of MOORE NEWS CHRISTINE SMITH (csmith@in-motion.net) *****As a result of my listing in the Moore Newsletter yesterday, today I know who the parents of my great-great-grandfather, William St. Clair Moore, were, have found another generation, and other places to research. I AM ECSTATIC! I began research on this direct line 20 years ago, when we moved to Kentucky. Off and on over the years I've have found bits and pieces of information to keep me looking. I have visited his home and saw his grave, and knew he had at least one brother, who is buried there beside him. I have often wondered when and if I would find the information I needed. Last year, my father, his great-grandson, died at age 87, and today, after receiving the information from Barb Proffitt, I dissolved into tears. My dad had worked with me on the genealogy and I'm sure he knows that I've found one more link in the chain that binds us to the past, and those who went before us. I can't thank you enough for sending that message and including the information in your signature [she's referring to a post I made on VA ROOTS]. I'm so glad I found the Moore Newsletter, and will gladly share the information with others who think it might be helpful. - - - - - - - - - - Correction: Last week an incorrect email address was published for ELIZABETH HOWARD TONN. The descendants of John MOORE were studied extensively by Lunelle Moore in the 1960s and these were published in David Trimble's book, "Hiestand Family of Page County, Virginia" in 1974. I have done much work on Joel Moore's family. Although more work is needed on Joel, the real problem lies with the parents of Joel and John: Jonathan MOORE and Scythia GEORGE. There are only two fragments of information about Jonathan MOORE that we have found in the possession of his descendants. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. The following was written in a book found among the effects of a grandson of John Moore and was probably written after 1850. Jonathan Moore came from Scotland to America in the early part of the Eighteenth century and settled in Shenandoah Co - Va. at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountain and married to Scytha George. He also had a brother Sam who settled there, of whom we have lost trace. Jonathan Moore had three sons, whose names were Joe (Joel), John and David. John Moore at about the age of 17 yrs. left his father's home in Va. and went to East Tenn., about Jonesboro. After remaining there for two or three years he came to Kentucky and settled on the head waters of Line Creek in what is now the South Central part of Monroe County. This was about 1810. He was married to Margaret Hestand in 1814. He remained here until his death in 1854 and raised a family of seven (7) children whose names are as follows-Joel, Jefferson W., Scott, Scythia, Philip, Elizabeth and Elzada. Jonathan Moore was born in Scotland (date unknown). John Moore was born in Shenandoah Co. Va. 1782 Pasted in back of this little book: Virginia ShanonDoah County Joall More was born March 15th in the year of our Lord 1768. 2. Some descendants of Joel MOORE who did not know of #1 above had a document that gave Joel Moore's birth date as 15 March, 1768, and stated that he had a brother John born in 1782. The document also gave the names and birth dates of 9 children of Joel Moore. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- We have found little information about Jonathan Moore. A Jonathan Moore appears in 1785 census on the list of Abraham Keller (Front Royal Area) with 7 white souls and 1 dwelling. This is probably our Jonathan because Joel Moore is thought to have made at least 4 trips to the Front Royal-Lebanon Church area during the period roughly 1801 to 1815. Jonathan Moore appears in the 1810 census in Shenandoah Co and this is probably our Jonathan. A Jonathan Moore is listed as father of Fanny Moore on an 1803 Shenandoah Co marriage bond between John Hamet and Fanny Moore. We have looked for Jonathan Moore's wife Scythia GEORGE. We found a Scythia George, daughter of Benjamin and Mary George, in Stafford Co and she is the right general age. We have collected Stafford County 18th century data and in fact found a Jonathan Moore there. There is no way yet to confirm any connections between our Jonathan and the Stafford Co people, although we strongly suspect that the Stafford Co Scythia George is our Scythia. I am including some Stafford Co data which will be of general interest to Moore researchers. I have documentation for all the items, but I am omitting it to save space. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- STAFFORD COUNTY VIRGINIA 1724 John Moore tobacco tenders Overwharton Parish Benjamin George 1737 Richard Moore Various items concerning estate of Richard Moore, dcsd 1740 Elizabeth Moore born to Jonathan and Elizabeth Moore 1743 Scythia George born to Benjamin and Mary George 1743 Nathaniel More married Elee Nickolas, son John born 1744 1745 Nathaniel More married to Sarah Page, children: Sarah, Mary, Sarah,John, Ann, Jane 1745 Jonathan Moore payment to estate of Anthony Linton 1746 Jonathan Moore owes 265 tobacco plants rent to estate of Captain William Brent 1751 William More married Mary Green, children: Isaac,William,Eliza 1764 Elizabeth Moore married Leonard Martin 1781 Jonathan Moore sign petition against building new court house and Jas. I have Post Polio Syndrome and had to retire early because of my condition. We have four children between us, two are my husband's and two are mine. My husband, Ivan, was a newspaper man and widower when we married 16 years ago and I was divorced. Right away, he was interested in learning about his family and so the last ten years I have spent more time on his line than mine. But now we are on the net, I am hoping to get going again, especially with the help of the Moore News. I have been researching my Moores and related families for my Mother's side since I was 17. I am now 63 and have finally got leads on my Father's side too. He was raised in an orphanage and it was hard to get his line started. It has been my good fortune, because of my interest in Genealogy, to have gotten most of our family interested in the same cause, although it has taken me years to light a fire under some of them. My Mother (Barbara C. Moore Acheson) is still alive and living in Greensboro, NC with my sister. She loves MOORE NEWS and I send her articles in the News that she would find of interest. Keep the great information coming we both enjoy it. The information below comes from the Moore FAMILY BIBLE, death certificates and marriage licenses My Moore family research starts with Byrd Moore who married 22 October 1798 , Halifax, Halifax Co, Va. to Frances Stanfield. They had several children but I only know the names of two. 1. Leonardas Moore who married Margaret J. Mc Neil 21 Oct 1844 in Caswell Co. ,NC. There are records of his service in the Civil War where he served the South as an officer. 2. William Jackson Moore b.20 Oct. 1816 Halifax , Va,; m.22 December 1840 a Kerr Chapel, Kelso, (12 miles form Yancyville) NC to Mary A. McNeill; He died 30 Aug 1896 and she died 13 June 1895 both of them at Pilot Mountain, Stokes Co, NC. They had lived in Caswell Co before the Civil War. They moved to Stokes Co prior to 1861 where he was a grocer helping supply the Southern troops with necessities. Several of his black slaves moved with him because he was a gentle and caring man. They remained with the family as servants after they gained their freedom. He never mistreated his people and they respected him for it. William Moore and his wife Mary McNeill Moore had at least nine children. One of the daughters was supposedly shot in the leg by a Yankee when they tried to take over the family home during the war, but don't know which one it was. 1. Virginia T.
