MOORE NEWS Volume II February 26, 1997 Issue 10, Part A SALUTATIONS PLEASE CONTACT ME if you sent a message yesterday (Tuesday. 2/25)) requesting that I change you from your AOL address to a new one. You are lost. - - - - - - - - - - COPYRIGHT EXPLANATION: We need to be more and more conscious of the courtesies and restrictions which apply to the use of copyrighted material. I asked Kathleen Much (kathleen@casbs.stanford.edu) if I could use her explanation in MN because she makes a clear statement which avoids he legal cliches that that tend to confuse laymen. She says: When you see the following statement: Copyright @1997 Kathleen Much [or other author], copying is permitted for noncommercial, educational use by individual scholars and libraries. This message must appear on all copied material. Any other use, including electronic reproduction or distribution, requires written permission of the author. This wording makes it clear that genealogists can quote from my research [or another person's research] for their own private collections, but not to sell it (or give it away) to others unless I give them permission in writing. The biggest problem nowadays is defining "fair use"--I deal every day with scholars who want to quote from other writers but don't know how much is OK. [Editor's Note: Most of us extract, abstract, and compile -- in effect we create new text, and MOORE NEWS is not a commercial venture. According to Kathleen, to be on the safe side,"the best rule of thumb is that the part quoted should be a very small percentage of the work it comes from and that your use of it should not hamper the original author's sales. [Along with this explanation, I should also pass along to you that I have applied for the copyright of MOORE NEWS. I'll notify you when it is officially obtained. The copyright will be retroactive. This is not so much to restrict your use, as it is to protect all of us if material is lifted and used for distasteful or offensive purposes.] - - - - - - - - - - - - - HARRY SILCOX (H Silcox) *****This was passed to me. For AOL refunds, call 1-800-827-6364. Be prepared to listen to a sales message before receiving instructions on how to get a refund [in most cases, the refund will be a credit as I understand it]. Hang on to the bitter end and you will be able to talk to a person. - - - - - - - - - - - BRENDA MOORE (KINGSLEY), one of our MOORE NEWS subscribers, has begun publishing a hard copy Moore distribution: "Moore Mysteries Journal." If interested in this new Moore publication, contact Brenda. - - - - - - - - - - - - Speaking of hard copy journals, new members may not have seen the earlier announcement of the hard copy newsletter, "Descendants of John Moore (d. 1755) of Albemarle Co VA. Bill is producing new research and is also editing the 40 years of cumulative research by the late Dr. Fleming Moore. NEW MEMBERS PAT CUMMINGS (Durrett44) *****I have been interested in genealogy only since the early 1990s, but it didn't take long to become obsessed by this hobby with my fondness for reading and research. I am seeking the parents of Rev. William MOORE who married Elizabeth (Betty) Johnston GRYMES in Orange Co., VA. in 1781. Elizabeth was born in Gloucester Co., VA in 1765 to Ludwell GRYMES and Mary Dawson, d/o Rev. William DAWSON, of William and Mary College. Elizabeth's parents later moved to Burlington in Orange Co., VA, where she married Rev. Wm. Moore, then an itinerant Methodist minister, according to William and Mary College Qrtly. Afterwards Rev. Wm. and "Betty" Moore settled in Fluvanna county remaining a few years until moving to the vicinity of Milton, Caswell Co., North Carolina, where they raised their family and in 1820 removed to Robertson Co., TN. where they remained until their deaths. I have a copy of the Inventory for the Estate of William Moore, decd. taken 2 Jan. 1821. Among those named in the inventory are Lucy W. Moore, Matilda Moore, William D. Moore, Polly D. Foulks(Faulks), Mary Richards. They also had another daughter Elizabeth "Betsy" Moore, who married in 1804 in Milton, Caswell Co., N.C., Francis (Frank) Durrett, my grgrgr-grandfather. Frank and Betsy Moore Durrett apparently went to Pittsylvania Co., VA and lived there until at least 1810 before moving to Robertson Co., TN. with Rev. Wm. and Elizabeth Moore. Frank Durrett was son of William Durrett,Pittsylvania Co., VA, son of Bartholomew Durrett of Albemarle, Spotsylvania and Caroline counties, VA. Could be John's brother or possible his father. We cannot find parents or siblings of John. Don't know place of birth in SC. Would solve many long years of work if some Moore knows of us. Also cannot find John Alexander's first wife, Matilda. She has become an important part of the puzzle to us, also. Our grandfather was first of now four James Brock Moore's. We began genealogy work in search of source of name Brock - thought it would be easy - probably a maiden name somewhere, but after 20 years, we still have not located Brock. Maybe James B Arrington, who married Nancy Agnes Moore is our Brock, but we have not been able to prove. Any help would be appreciated. - - - - - - - - - - - - BLEW IT AGAIN! My name is Ernest Newton Moore. My father was Horace Brown Moore, his father was William Thomas Moore (b. Tn 1872, d. 1966 GA.). His father was Thomas Franklin Moore (b. In. 1832, d 1916, AL.), his father was Samuel Moore (b. e.1800 SC., d. Cedar Falls, Iowa 1860., and his father was William Layton Moore (b. e.1752 VA, d. approx 1830, Indiana.) Have many siblings of all parties in my family tree. George W. Moore of Seattle who died in 11/96 wrote about "Moore in the family". I'm sure you have info on that. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - EUNICE MOORE BOUCHER (EUNICE@DRYCAS.CLUB.CC.CMU.EDU) *****My name is Eunice Boucher. I am trying to find my ancestors from North Carolina. My father's name was Louis George Moore, b. in 1904 in Nash County N.C., d. in Louisiana in 1961. His father was George Aldridge Moore, b. 1869 in Granville County, N.C., m. Sarah Hull in 1895 in Halifax County, d. Nash County around 1940. They had several children: James, Mabel, Roy, Dewey, Louis, Ashley, and Woodrow Moore. After Sarah died in 1918, George remarried Georgiana Pullen and they had 2 children, Billy Aldridge and Georgia (I think they were twins). George's parents were William and Avey (maiden name unknown). I think William's father was Rial (sometimes called William R.) Rial had a brother named Lemuel or Lennel Moore. Avie and George were living with Lemuel's widow and children according to the 1870 census. I also have reason to believe Lemuel and William's father was Charles Moore (sometimes spelled Moor) from Granville County. Lemuel and Rial married sisters, Mary and Martha Wadford. Sarah's mother was Emma Capps from Warren County. She married James or Jesse Hull. After his death, she married a King and they had a son named Charlie King. Charlie was living with Sarah and George, according to the 1920 census at Halifax County. All of my father's relatives are dead now and the family apparently didn't keep records. I would like to find out if George had any siblings, whether William and Avey were married, and what happened to them between 1870 and 1895. I welcome any responses and will be more than happy to share the information I have on the Moore family. - - - - - - BILL WALSH (WWalsh7674) *****My wife, Grace Moore Walsh, was born in Elba, Alabama. She was the seventh child of twelve children. Her father was Joseph Jackson Moore born in Elba, Alabama 7 Oct 1886. She retired a few years ago as a Professor in the Art Department of Jefferson State Junior College, Birmingham, Alabama. Her father was Joseph Jackson Moore born 07 Oct 1884 in Coffee County, Al. Her grandfather was Bostic (Boss) Moore born in 1854 in Pike County, Ga. Her gr grandfather was Joel Moore born in Pike County, Ga in 1820. Her gr gr grandfather was John Moore born in North Carolina and came to Monroe County, Ga about 1800. He won land in the Georgia 1821 land lottery which later became Pike County, Georgia, where he lived, raised his families and died. He married three times and had seventeen children. He is a descendant of the Moore family which formerly owned the present site of the US Military Academy at West Point which was highlighted briefly in the issue of Feb 5. Steve very generously shares a comprehensive lineage of this family at my request and will send new information about the English origins of this family as soon as it is completed. This Moore family covers the entire eastern seaboard from early days, so it is a key Moore family for many of us (including Mt. Tirzah, NC). Below, please see Steve's introductory remarks. The lineage and remarks about the direction of current research will be sent to you in a separate distribution, Vol. II, No. 11. ******I'm Stephen Horner Moore, the seventh gr-grandson of our first Moore immigrant to America. I was born in Hawaii just after the Japanese strike on Pearl Harbor. My wife, Mitzi, and I live in Arden on the Severn, a small community on the Severn River north of Annapolis, MD. I am named after my fifth Great-grandfather who inherited and sold to the US government what is now the site of the US Military Academy at West Point, NY. We are fortunate to have many members of the family who are doing family research and I hope that we can provide information which will be helpful to the readers of the MOORE NEWS. - - - - - - - - - - - - - STEVE WILSON (WILLSST3@aol.com) ***** I am a 48 math teacher with a wonderful wife of almost 25 years, a married daughter and a son who is in his junior year at the University of Illinois. I started genealogy in earnest in 1981 so I have been at it for 16 years. Hester Moore married Mathew Moore Walkerin Robertson Co., Tennessee and came to Williamson Co., Illinois in 1834. Her father was Benjamin Moore who died in Robertson Co., Tennessee in 1827. In his will he mentions his wife Judith and the following children: Hester Moore, wife of Matthew Walker Elizabeth (Moore ) Crain (I think Mrs. Felix Middleton Crain) Susan( Moore) Jameson (I think Mrs. Thomas Jameson) Joseph Moore (b. bef 1806) Alexander Moore (b. bef 1806) Patterson Moore (b. aft 1806) Riley Moore (b. aft 1806) Seborn James Moore (b. aft 1806) Warren Spiller Moore (b. aft 1806) Warren Moore was probably the Warren Moore born abt 1814 and married to Louisa G. Thaxton in 1839 in Williamson Co., Illinois. There seems to be a strong association with the Reeves and Patterson families of Robertson Co., Tennessee. I was reading about Western ABLEMARLE MOORES (Benjamin Moore) in Moore News Volume 7. There certainly seems to be a tie in. I have only read the MOORE NEWS up to August of last year so I may be repeating information someone else has already sent you. Most of the miscellaneous information I have is about Southern Illinois, Robertson Co., Tennessee or North Carolina Moores. KY. Lewis Moore, b. 1792 KY, and Polly (I'm. Joel Smith) married 1824 in Madison Co. KY, are parents of Lynch Moore and an unknown daughter who married a Wren. Lynch Moore, b. 1828, married ca1850 in Madison Co., KY to Rebecca Bailey. Rebecca was b. in Madison Co, also in 1828. We always thought Rebecca's name was Bailey but have learned that she was brought up by her Grandmother Wells; we also know that she had an uncle Henry Wells or Bailey. Lynch died 1906, Coffey Co. KS. Rebecca died 1913, Johnson Co. KS. Lynch & Rebecca Moore moved to Platte Co. MO about 1853/4. The first of their children, John Nathan, was born in Madison Co. KY, and the others all born Platte Co. MO. The children were: John Nathan Moore, b. ca 1853, d. CO Mary Ann (Polly) Moore, b. 1854, m. Thomas Maxie/Maxey in Platte Co. MO. Samuel B. Moore b. ca 1857. William Richard Moore, b. 1859, d. 1911 Johnson Co. KS, m. Elizabeth Emma Munson Lizzie Moore, b. 1860. Sarah Ann Moore, b. 1861, m. James Talley. Cyrus Moore, b. 1863, m. In addition to raising their own family, Lynch and Rebecca also raised three of his sister's children -- Jim, Tom and Lewis Wren -- and a granddaughter, Gertie Maxey Black. I would really like to learn more about Lynch's & Rebecca's parents and grandparents. - - - - - - - - - - - PAUL (Pvm17@aol.com) has a query in response to 5 Feb submission by LORENE (lorenew@tir.com) *****Your list of marriages in Norfolk Co, Ontario caught my eye. I have a John Moore, son of James Moore and Ann Wade who was born in Devonshire, England 27 Jan 1825. John is my ggg-uncle. Family moved to Darlington in 1835, then to Fullarton, Perth Co, several years later. John was eldest child of many and he was not listed with the family in the 1851 census records of Perth Co. His father and several brothers were farmers. I assume he probably left to go some other place, possible to farm or follow a trade or to follow a romantic interest. Two of the Johns in your list have possibilities as Norfolk Co is not too far from Perth Co. What else, if anything, can you find on these two?
