MOORE NEWS Volume II February 26, 1997 Issue 10, Part B QUERIES (Continued from MOORE NEWS, Vol. II, Issue 10, Part A) SALLY VAUN (svaun@esslink.com) *****I am looking for information for an uncle who is not on the internet, he is in his 80's so I rather doubt if he is about to get on it. We need information about a Richard Moore. He was married 2 times, the second wife Susannah Tull. They had a son Needham born 29 Oct 1806 in Lenoir Co, NC. He married an Eliz Jackson 22 Dec.1829, Lenoir Co NC. Needham died 21 Apr 1880, she died 30 Dec 1882, Lenoir Co, NC. They had a son James Jefferson Moore b. 28 Dec 1838 also in Lenoir Co NC who was a Confederate soldier. We have searched everywhere and are looking to the internet as a last resort. Thank you for your time and any suggestions, we will appreciate it. - - - - - - - - - - - - - ELAINE SPRUILL (okiegirl24@aol.com) ******Hello All, I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. I enlisted in the Army, after high school in 1973, served 20 and a half years, as a policewoman. Retired in 1993 in Birmingham, AL, now teaching JROTC, at a local High School. I have been researching for about a year and genealogy has become an obsession for me. I only recently found out about my Moore ancestors and only yesterday about the Newsletter. Thanks for welcoming me to it. My earliest known Moore, was Charles Moore, b. 1796 NC, m. Mahala Johnson, 27 Sep 1820, Dallas Co, AL, d. 26 Dec 1852, in Lauderdale Co, MS. Charles and Mahala can be found in Dallas Co thru 1835. The Mississippi Territory became a State in 1817 and the last of the Indian lands were opened for settlement in 1837. A large migration resulted to Kemper, Lauderdale, Leake, Neshoba, Noxubee, and Obitha Counties. [Ed. Note, how interesting, Elaine, to have this bit of history - makes our ancestors much more reasonable people!] Charles Moore seems to have been part of the migration that took the path from Dallas Co, AL to Lauderdale Co, MS. Charles owned a plantation with over 800 acres and was a successful farmer. His daughter Martha Moore married into my Jones line, John W. Jones m. 11 Apr 1841, in Lauderdale. Their son Shaderick Shelton (Shade) Jones is my line. John died fairly young and Martha remarried a George W. Smith, and later moved to Kemper Co, MS with her family..I believe she had three children with George..she died in Mechanicsburg, Yahoo Co, MS 1 Aug 1882, she is buried at Ogden cemetery there. RESPONSES PAMELA HENDRICKSON (SUNKST 7) *****Re: Bob Moore's note in Vol II, issue 8, part 1 regarding Edminster Moore family. My 8 great grandfather, Capt. Samuel Moore (1645-1717) had a brother named Gershom Moore. Their parents were Rev. John Moore (1620-1657) and Margaret Howell. I do not have any further information on Gershom's line except that a Gerhom Moore m. Mary [Fish] w. Jonathan aft. 1663, Newton, LI (Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700). I descend from Capt. Samuel's daughter Elizabeth. Perhaps this Gershom Moore is an ancestor to the Gershom Moore mentioned in Bob Moore's note. - - - - - - - - - - - - JANET STRICKLAND (okcanal@gate.net) *****In old issue #10 PAUL PHIPPS (Paulphipps) was asking about Moore-Holt in his line In issue #6 1997. I also have a Moore-Holt in my query to ya'll. I have Bible pages which show that Elizabeth Emily Moore b. 12/06/1809 m. Robert T Holt 12/22/1829 c. James O. Holt b.5/27/1831. This was all in Greene Co. Ga. Elizabeth and her husband are specifically mentioned in her father - Joseph V. Moore's will written Jan 1859 so they were married 30 years. No other children are written in the Bible. My gggrandfather was Elizabeth's younger brother, James Park Moore. He was the13th child so I think they got tired of writing. I have some "beautiful writings" of his I will share with ya'll in the future. [Ed. Note: Now I want to see the writings that Janet has. Compositions, letters, etc. of older relatives are the breath of life to the starkness of a list of names and dates.] - - - - - - - - - - BEN HOOKS (0007239973@mcimail.com) *****The Henry Co VA line of William Moore mentioned by KENNETH SMITH (DMUB77A @prodigy.com) in 5 Feb Part A, MOORE NEWS, 'matches' some of mine, as my descent came through William Moore also (you included mention of his brother Eleck, which jogged my memory as having heard that strange [or misspelled?] name before). My mother achieved DAR membership through her mother's Moore family, and I believe the Wm Moore you mentioned (brother of Eleck) is included as Wm F. Moore, son of William Moore b. 1775 in Henry Co, VA, m. Elizabeth Carter on 25 Feb 1805 in Stokes Co, NC, and was the son of William Moore, b. abt 1747 in VA, d. Oct 1810, and who fought in the Rev War. I have only been genealogy-active for about 5 years, but I agree with your comment about its addictiveness. I have a copy (3 or 400 pages?) of the DAR application of my mother. I will gladly exchange what I have that would help you, and would be most interested in acquiring a copy of your info. [Ed. Note: Regarding the name Eleck. Elecks are not unusual in Stokes Co NC - usually spelled Alec or Alex now, but still pronounced Eleck. It is a diminutive of Alexander.) - - - - - - - - - - ALYCE (alyce_herrera@CCMAIL.lbl.gov) responds to VERNA LERDALL (VLerdall) ******My Moore side of the family came from Maryland, but I believe lived in Hancock Co. Georgia 1804, their names being Jacob Moore b. 1779 and Ellender/Ellen/Nellie Moore b. 1793. I believe they are brother and sister. A Nellie Moore married Cary Curry in 1812 in Baldwin Co. Ga. They went to Conecuh Co. Alabama, where Cary supposedly died in 1825. Ellen (Moore) Curry and Jacob Moore migrated to Montgomery Co. AL. They were there thru the war. Would love it if anyone has any information on these Moore's from Maryland. Ellen Curry (Moore) had I believe 5 children, one being my GGGrandfather Henry, who married Sarah Jackson in Montgomery, Alabama. After the war they began migrating North and ended up in High Prairie township, Webster Co. Missouri. I will check the two cemetery records I have for Webster Co. for Moore names for you. My GGrandfather married Rebecca Cantrell in Webster Co. When I first got involved with the "MOORE Family Group," I contacted LORI Hucklor@aol.com through the web. She was looking for Cantrell's in Webster Co. and I spoke with her as we did make a connection with the Cantrell side of the family. I noticed on the back issues of Moore News last week that she was searching for Moores and getting the News in the beginning, and I do know she and her husband are tracing Moore's from Missouri, in the Webster Co. area. This is where they are both from. Funny how the Moore's are in the middle of the Curry's and Cantrell's, and I never made the connection until your response. RESEARCH JUDY ALLEY (JudyAlley) *****I just received a new book by Mary Kegley, "Abstracts of Court Orders of Wythe County Va 1811-1820." It can be ordered directly from her at Box 134, Wytheville.Va 24382. It includes information on Peter and Ammon Moore. However, I do not know if it is Peter Sr. or Peter Jr. If any other MOORE NEWS members are researching SW Va. write for a list of books written and published by Mary Kegley. She is one of the leading historians of that area and produces excellent work. Ammon Moore was cited in court for breach of peace on 9 June 1812. Peter Moore was granted administration of the estate of Ammon (Amon) Moore on 14 Mar 1815. (I have sent a request to Washington to obtain a copy of Peter's war of 1812 records. if successful, I will then try to find something on Ammon) Unable to track Peter Sr, I am going to work on his son Charles. I found Charles Moore, brother of Peter and son of Peter Sr , on the 1870 Carroll County Census. He was listed as age 72 with wife Lucinda age 60, also Charles Moore age 11and Margaret Norris age 17. Charles Moore had married widow Lucinda Norris on 5 Aug 1854 in Carroll County. Charles Moore was listed on the marriage record as age 57, born Sullivan Co Tenn. Lucinda was listed born in Floyd County and daughter of Robert and Sarah Ratliff. The 1850 Montgomery Census lists Sarah Ratliff age 55, Ruth Carroll 27 and three children and Lucinda Norris age 30, Julia A Norris age 10, and Harvey Norris age 2. There was a Sarah Norris age 4 living in the Levi Bechlehimer household. Margaret Norris (1870 census) was born about 1853.. if Lucinda Norris was a widow (1850 census) was Margaret a niece or granddaughter?????? I don't have any Floyd Co. sources to check on the marriage of Margaret or death of her spouse... I will send a request to the Carroll County Court House for information pertaining to the 1883 marriage of Charles Moore and Sarena Goad (bk1pg 57) If it is the same Charles as the 1870 census it will identify his mother... As you can see, I am leaving no stone unturned in trying to track down "Dear Olde Peter" - - - - - - - - - - - - DavidM164@aol.com *****I have been a subscriber to the Moore News for a long time. I am continually amazed with the information I receive. It is history, my history, coming alive. I really appreciate what you and all the others are doing week to week. [Nice remarks - all of us share the credit of this observation.] I have been working with my Moore family for approximately 10 months. What I have found has been very interesting and personally rewarding. I would like to post my family as I have it now. I am continually researching, updating, and revising. It is so helpful meeting others interested in my line and sharing information. I have come to a small roadblock with my gggg-grandfather, George M. MOORE, in Virginia, abt 1732. I have found his will, in North Carolina, 4 March 1817, Rutherford County. George had four children: Rececca, James C. (my line), Joseph, and Lemuel. I believe he was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Marrying twice, George first married Martha and then Elizabeth. I have find no information as to his wives surnames, nor where or when they died. I would appreciate any help. My Moore ancestors to date: George Moore, b abt 1732 Mecklenburg Co. I had some trouble accessing them once I loaded them, tho. I guess I had to learn a few things about my computer! Anyway, I looked up some more about my Moores in Darke County, OH. I now have found them in 1870 and 1880. William Moore and his wife Mary were born in Indiana, they said. He said his father was b. in PA and mother in NC. Her father was b. in Indiana and mother in NC. So, I am now intrigued about the Indiana connection. Where did they come from? I went into Indiana GenWeb. Randolph Co had Quakers as I think the Moores were. They could have been in Randolph, but I'm thinking they were from southwest Indiana, in one of several counties: Switzerland, Dearborn, Ohio or Ripley? Still I have to get the census and look or even search these counties. I am looking for Moore researchers in Indiana and northern Kentucky. One clue to my Moores is the name Vanlandingham. Also Wright and Custer. My father-in-law thought he was distantly related to the Wright Brothers of airplane fame and Custer of Little Big Horn fame. I found a researcher for Vanlandingham, who says that family was in Kentucky. My wife's grandfather was named Allison Vanlandingham Moore. Surely and undoubtedly there has to be a connection to those surnames! Anyway, here are some names I pulled from the Ripley Co. web page. They are Moores who were original land purchases in Ripley Co., IN. JOHN ERICKSON Daily Press, 20 February 1997 An AP Member Extra PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- Construction crews working on a new ferry slip have unearthed the remains of what archaeologists have preliminarily identified as a late 18th-century sailing vessel. The rare find would make the ship one of only about a dozen known Virginia wrecks dating from the period, said archaeologist John Broadwater, who helped conduct the underwater excavation of a Revolutionary War vessel off Yorktown during the 1970s. It also would represent the only chance scientists have had since that time to study something more substantial than fragments that have washed ashore. ''Any ship dating to the 18th century is considered unusual,'' said Randy Turner, director of the state Department of Historic Resources district office in Portsmouth. ''This is not an ordinary find.'' Construction crews discovered the unidentified wooden ship last Friday while excavating soil and debris from the new High Street ferry basin, said city public works director Richard Hartman. Though partially destroyed by the work, two large sections of the roughly 100-foot-long vessel survive intact about 20 to 25 feet below the surrounding ground. ''We wouldn't have known it was there if he hadn't noticed what he was bringing up,'' Hartman said of a Tidewater Construction Co. equipment operator who spotted the ship. ''There's all sorts of old wooden pilings down there. But this was part of a hull.'' Hartman said his inspection convinced him to shut down the work until the remains could be examined by archaeologists from the Department of Historic Resources. His suspicions were confirmed when Turner identified the find. Turner was joined by Broadwater, who now heads the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, and DHR archaeologist Dave Hazzard. Also called in was nautical archaeologist Gordon Watts of East Carolina University, as well as two other members of the DHR staff, to conduct a more extensive survey. Based on the size and strength of the ship's framing, the scientists believe it was a solidly built, substantial vessel that may have been capable of sailing on the ocean. Its timbers also include a high proportion of pine and other softwoods, suggesting a Southern and possibly Virginia origin, Turner said. Several artifacts found at the site, including a late 18th-century bottle and mid 18th-century lead-glazed earthenware, point to a date sometime before 1800. That could make the vessel one of about 100 ships known to have been deliberately sunk in the Elizabeth River during the American Revolution. ''This ship was in very good shape when it hit the bottom,'' Turner said. ''It wasn't something that was just allowed to rot away and sink. So it could have been scuttled.'' Turner said the DHR will try to determine whether the site is significant enough to qualify for the National Register of Historic Places. If so, the city, which is using $3.5 million in federal funds to build the ferry landing, will have to conduct further archaeological studies to comply with the National Historic Preservation Act. That work could range from measuring, documenting and photographing the wreck to a full-scale dig designed to recover all of the remains. ''The city's been remarkably cooperative and excited about this so far,'' Turner said. ''We want to work with them and see that there are no unreasonable delays'' to the ferry slip project.
