It has been believed for many years that he was a decendant of the Moores of Fawley and a link into English and European royalty. Research done by Terri Bradshaw O'Neill has casts doubt on the relationship to the Moores of Fawley. The memoirs of John Moore (1745-1828) state: "The only account I have ever been able to obtain of any of my Grandfather's ancestors is the copy of a record from the Herald's Office in England, brought from thence by Thomas William Moore about the year 1770. It is as follows: Sir John Moore of Fawley, Berkshire, was created a Knight by King Charles the 1st on the 21st May 1627...". The College of Arms in London is unable to verify this accounting. What is interesting is that on 21 May 1627 the dignity of Baronet was conferred on a Henry Moore and the Moores of Fawley were at that time granted arms very similar to that described in John Moore's (1745-1828) memoirs, but with notable differences. Another glaring error was also discovered during Terri's research. The purported link into royalty was a reported marriage in 1655 between one Francis Moore of Fawley and Mary Carey, daughter of Edward Carey. The Lancaster Herald of the College of Arms in London pointed out the impossibility of this marriage. While the Carey lineage does show a Mary, daughter of Edward, she was born 50 years after the date of the alleged marriage. Well, if John Moore (1659-1732) is not a descendant of the Moores of Fawley, who were his parents? Other research conducted by Bridget Lakin in England yielded baptismal records in London which seem to represent John Moore's (1659-1732) family. Baptismal records for St. Brides and St. Margarets Parishes in London reflect baptisms of the children of a John and Dorothy Moore as follows: John, 1659, St. Brides; Mary, 1660, St. Brides; Thomas, 1662, St. Brides; Richard, 1664.5, St. Brides; Dorothy, 1666, St. Margarets; Somerset, 1670, St. Margarets. While this is not irrefutable evidence, it seems highly probable that our John Moore was not a Moore of Fawley, but rather the son of John and Dorothy Moore of London.
