MOORE NEWS Volume II 13 March, 1997 Issue 12N New Members SALUTATIONS After distributing MOORE NEWS for almost a year, I've recently had to field the first complaints about reception. AOL "upgraded" its applications recently, and there have been a series of problems ever since both from my end and from your end. On my end, I had to paste up each issue in bits and pieces to avoid a crash and burn effect and it became apparent that the Address Book was not accepting additions and deletions in group lists. From your end, folks have complained about several reception problems. The most frequent complaint concerned the small typeface, but you know what - I've been using point-9 typeface for several months now and nobody complained. For this issue, I'm using point-10 typeface in the hope that it will transmit better and will move some introductions to following week. Hopethe image that arrives at your end is more comfortable to read. You'll be happy to learn that (if possible) I will abandon AOL's upgrade as a failed application for the present. Evidently it was rushed it into distribution before it was ready as a demonstration of all the effort was making to satisfy consumers. This issue will be delivered via the 'new and improved' application; but my intent is to revert to the 'old and proved' application. Let me know if things improve next week. NEW MEMBER INTRODUCTIONS SHARON MOORE WORKMNAN (SharonW112) *****Here is my Bio: I was born in 1948 in Decatur, Ill. The dates of birth and death for MICHAEL are unknown. His great grandsons stated that he was a German emigrant and that he died in Belmont Co., Ohio at the age of 106. We can only estimate that his lifespan was circa 1740/1840. He supposedly migrated to Captina Creek, Washington township, Belmont Co., Ohio from Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania c1800. She was born 25 July 1853 in Anderson Co., SC, and died 28 April 1933 in Johnson Co., TX. She married Robert Matthis Cleveland Brand in Cherokee Co., GA in October 1870. Mellisa Jane Moore was the daughter of John Matthew Moore (b 1833 in SC) and Mary Jane Spearman (b abt 1833 in SC). John Matthew Moore's father was James M. Moore. I have no other information on any of them. Any help will be greatly appreciated. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LARRY THOMAS (thomashm@fidnet.com) *****I was born in Jonesboro, AR and left when I went into the Army. Spent a year with the 11th Cavalry in Vietnam. I graduated with a BS from Univ of Mo. St.Louis and an MBA from So. Ill Univ. Edwardsville. I've worked for Paramount Headwear for 13 years. I'm married to Barbara Swoboda who spends a lot of time translating 1800's German and Latin from church records. I have a dau. Sherry who is in Shreveport LA managing a freight brokerage office, a dau. Cindy who attends college at Arkansas State Univ. Decided to start over again and have a dau. Laura, 10 who keeps me and Barb busy coaching her Odyssey of the Mind team, and Katie 4, who wants to change her name to Allerina Ballerina. I haven't been working on genealogy very long, but I've been very fortunate and met some very nice people that have gotten me further along on my grandmother's family than I probably deserve. But I won't complain. I'm not very "educated" in the MOORE's. I am descended from, and looking for the parents of, Thomas MOORE, b. abt 1752 Halifax Co VA. d. Aug 27, 1816 Halifax Co. VA. He married Nancy Anne Whaley, dau. of James Whaley and Penelope King. I'm further descended from Thomas' dau. Penelope MOORE, b. abt 1784 Mecklenburg Co VA, m. Willis Hopwood Jul 7, 1800 Pittsylvania Co VA, d. abt 1868 Pike Co MO. Other children of Thomas were Sally, Vincent, Whaley, Thomas Jr., Merimon m Permelia Farmer, Levi, Anna, James, Jeremiah, Matthew and Polly. Most of these show up on the 1830 Pike Co. Mo census. I don't live too far from Pike Co and trying to arrange a trip up there shortly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - BRIAN MOORE (Dream Dancer@aol.com) ***** I live in a little town call Kissee Mills, Missouri. My Moore connection is my husband's line. His gg grandparents were: Sidwell More, b1800 KY and Martha Ann Hart Bunch More, b abt 1800 in NC or VA. Their children were: Calvin Moore b 1839 IN and Elizabeth Moore b 1841 IN. Family tradition says they were Cherokees. The 1850 Shelby Co., IL Census says mulatto, and the 1830-40 Greene Co., IN Census calls them free colored persons. Sidwell had a sister, Elizabeth Moor, and his father was probably Shadrack or Shadwick More, b 1781 NC. Martha More was first married to a Mr. Bunch--I don't know if he was Cherokee Indian or not. Other relatives are Lucinda Moore, b abt 1825 KY and Amanda (Mandy) Matilda Moore, b abt 1830 IN. They married David Bunch and Benjamin Bunch in Shelby Co., IL and moved on to Linn Co. KS. Amanda is the daughter of John More. I am searching for Sidwell and Martha's parents--any help would be greatly appreciated. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PATTE WOOD (patte@ccrma.stanford.edu) *****Hello to the group. My name is Patte Wood. I was born in 1949 in Seattle, WA and given up for adoption by my birth mother. My adoptive parents, Davis and Doris Wood moved to La Grange, Chicago just before my younger sister was born in 1950. We lived there 5 years and moved to Spokane, Washington until 1958 when we moved to Los Altos, CA where my dad worked for Lockheed Missiles and Space. I attended college at San Jose State University where I earned a BA in Music. I started studying piano and playing in recitals at age 5. After college I began working at Stanford University and became Administrative Director of the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics. I also started studying photography which has become a semi-professional hobby for me. I have been using computers since 1968. I have retired from administration and am going back to school to get a Master's Degree. My topic of study is "How technology affects creativity in the Arts." I have not married but had a long-term relationship which has ended. I began genealogy research when I was 19 and my dad brought home from Virginia some family history. I began in earnest about 3 years ago when I was dealing with my family identity and adoption issues. Through my research I found several cousins in Virginia that were close to my grandfather's family. My grandfather moved to Washington State to work as a chemist for Dupont and, except for a short stay in VA when he had tuberculosis, remained in the NW. The rest of his siblings remained on the east coast. At the same time I found my birth mother in Seattle. We are in contact via an intermediary but I don't know her last name. I have two half-sisters and a half-brother who do not know about me. It turns out, interestingly, that her passion is genealogy and she has been researching and teaching genealogy for about 10 years. I know little of my birth family in terms of genealogy. My Moore connection is through the Wood side of my adoptive family in Virginia. Moore is a collateral line for me but one of interest to our family as they intermarried a lot with our Wood ancestors. Thomas Moore married Martha Wood, daughter of Joseph and Martha Epperson Wood, 2 Feb 1795 in Botetourt Co. VA. He was born about 1770 and died Feb 1851 in Botetourt Co. VA. He is buried in Locust Bottom Cemetery near Glen Wilton, VA. We do not know anything about Thomas Moore's parents or siblings. Siblings of Martha Wood married people from Charlotte Co., Prince Edward Co., and Augusta Co., VA. When Thomas Moore died, Martha Wood Moore and several of her children moved to Randolph Co. VA. There they intermarried with Wood cousins and Moore cousins. We have traced many of their descendants to the present day and there is a Wood/Moore reunion in Mingo, WVA every year. The children of Thomas and Martha Wood Moore were: Thomas Moore Jr. named in father's will as already receiving his land. No further information. All the other children inherited equally by Thomas Moore's will. As far as we know, he did not go with the others to Randolph Co. Elizabeth "Betsy" Moore m. John Melone/Malone 22 Dec 1816 Botetourt Co. 6 children. She died before her father's will in 1849. Clarinda Moore. b. app 1800. Never married. Moved to Randolph Co. about 1852. She was the "responsible" in the family. John Wood Moore m. cousin Mary Wood 11 Mar 1828 in Bath Co. moved to Randolph Co. about 1852. b. 1803 in Botetourt Co.., died Mingo, Randolph Co. 1 Aug 1883 WVA. 9 children. Joseph Moore m. cousin Amanda Wood 28 Feb 1828 in Bath Co. moved to Randolph Co. about 1852. b. 4 Aug 1804 died 17 May 1885 in Mingo, Randolph Co.WVA. 7 children. Mary Ann Moore m. Alexander C. Logan 30 Dec 1840 in Botetourt Co. moved to Randolph Co. about 1852. no information on children.
