MOORE NEWS Volume II March 19,1997 Issue 13 - New Members NEW MEMBERS INTRODUCTIONS LYNN PERKINS (nit@arn.net) *****I am new to the MOORE NEWS weekly E-mail Letter. If I am fortunate to live until April 12, 1997 I will reach the half century mark. My wife and I are "working on" our 25th year of marriage blessed with two teenage children, still at home. I am a college educated carpenter. Obtained a BA degree and ended up carpentering to "work at" earning a living. My success in marriage is primarily due to the patience of my wife who is a pre-Kindergarden teacher for the Canyon Independent School District. This is in the Panhandle of Texas near Amarillo. I am fortunate that both my parents are still living, in excellent health, and have been married over 50 years. I owe my interest in genealogy to my maternal grandfather, George Bartlett Moore, known as Bart, b. 1881 in Clay Co., AL, d. 1970, Yoakum Co., TX. Bart was a wonderful story teller and had an excellent memory. During the course of his life he did almost everything, blacksmith, farm, carpenter, early auto mechanic ca 1910, etc. to provide for his family. I knew him as "grandpa" MOORE, but was certain he was called Bart because that is what my grandmother called him in various degrees of temperament. Their 60 plus year marriage is what I call a "unique study in human relationship" spanning a century if you count what you could learn from those stories about family history. Bart Moore left Clay Co. AL in 1896 with his parents and settled in Limestone Co. TX. By 1900 he was married to Minnie Lee Hammonds and beginning a family. Bart was 19 years old and Minnie was 16 years old. My mother was the youngest of their six children. She was 19 years younger than her oldest sister. Before my Grandpa MOORE died, my mother took notes while he was telling stories about the MOORE family. My grandfather was 10 years old when "his" grandfather MOORE fell into the fireplace and was severely burned. His name was Idens MOORE. He never recovered from those burns and was buried in Aug. 1891 in the Aldersprings Baptist Church Cemetery, now abandoned in the woods near the present village of Barfield in Clay Co., AL. At the age of 71, Bart Moore took his first trip back to Clay Co. AL, the place of his youth, and located the graves of his grandparents. Descendants from this MOORE couple buried in the Aldersprings Baptist Cemetery number over 2000. Of their 12 children, six were boys and six were girls. The couple known as Idens Moore and France Elizabeth Reeves had 85 grandchildren, and 360 plus great-grandchildren. My grandfather was not a genealogist. He never filled out a "family sheet". He was just interested in his family. Through the efforts and research of many members of this branch of the MOORE family we were able to connect to the research already published in two books in 1993. Consequently I can state: I am a tenth generation descendant from James MOORE, blacksmith from Philadelphia Penn. ca 1684. My primary reason to join MOORE NEWS is to share my research and experiences with others and perhaps help them find their MOORE family roots. I am especially interested in and contributing to the study of the early Colonial MOORES in America and their connections to England or Ireland, etc. I have long since realized there are not enough days left in my life to complete a study by myself of the Colonial MOORES back to England or Ireland. The combined research of this early Colonial MOORE study may perhaps solve many MOORE mysteries. This is the only way I can repay all those who have shared with me over the years. My mother grew up on a sandy land farm near Quitaque, TX. It was here she helped hoe cotton with my grandfather during the hot summer days of the late 1920's through 1930's. The older MOORE girls were married and gone from home.. Grandpa Moore would tell family stories about Alabama to pass the time while hoeing cotton. My grandmother (Minnie) died in 1962. In my grandfather's later years he lived with us periodically during my high school years. We were room mates. I was fortunate to hear his family stories over and over again. My mother realized she needed to record those family stories and began taking notes the summer before my grandmother died. Over the next 8 years she managed to compile enough notes In 1976 and 1977 a group of related researcher began the quest to identify the parents of - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - BRENDA ERICSSON (dbericsson@aol.com or) *****I lived in Maryland and started doing genealogy about six years ago, whereupon we immediately left that area near research facilities and ancestral country and traveled a couple of years in our RV. We're now settled in AZ, where living is easy in the winter. My Moore ancestors are said to be: 1.David Moore m. Mary Evans. They may have been born in the early 1700s, don't know where. Their son: 2. Ross Joseph Moore m. Margaret McClung. Born perhaps in the mid-1700s, had moved to Pendleton Co. (W)VA by about 1775, when their daughter was born: 3. Jane Moore, b. abt 1775 in Pendleton Co. (W)VA, m. 14 Sep 1798 in Bath Co. VA to Robert Duffield, Jr., d. bef 1830?, probably in Nicholas Co. (W)VA. I will appreciate any clues to these MOOREs. Many thanks. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LUCY BELL (SLBELL1@aol.com) *****I have 2 maternal MOORE lines and 1 paternal MOORE line as follows: 1) Nicholas MOORE (probably b. and d. in England). I don't know who his wife was. His daughter, Jane MOORE m. William LUDLOW II (d. May 6, 1553 in England). This line leads down to Robert "King" CARTER. I would like to find out more about Nicholas MOORE and his family. 2) Diana MOORE m. Richard GWATHMEY, son of Owen GWATHMEY I. This is our "mystery" MOORE. I have not been able to find her parents, dates, siblings, etc., or to link her anywhere. Diana and Richard had a son, Owen GWATHMEY II (b. 1727 in "Burlington", VA and d. 1776), who married Hannah TEMPLE. Owen and Hannah had a son, Owen GWATHMEY III (b. 1755 in VA and d. 1830 in Louisville, KY), who married Ann CLARK (b. July 14, 1755 in Albermarle, VA and d. 1822 in Louisville, KY). Ann was the daughter of John CLARK III and Ann ROGERS. Owen and Ann had a daughter, Diana MOORE GWATHMEY (b. April 4, 1782 and d. April 3, 1853 in Paducah, KY), who married Alexander Thomas BULLITT (b. January 29, 1777 in Warfield, VA and d. January 2, 1823). I would love some clues to finding something about Diana! 3) James MOORE was b. in Ireland. He was m. and had at least 5 children, including James MOORE who m. Jane WALKER. This line was mentioned in Issue I-11. Also in the newsletter II-11, Melinda Larson discussed this line. Melinda and I have just "discovered" each other on the Walker Family discussion list!! I am descended from a daughter of James and Jane: Elizabeth MOORE (d. abt 1783 in VA) m. Michael COALTER (b. abt 1735 and d. 1801). I would like to find out about the original James MOORE. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - RICHARD WHITT (whittrw@aol.com) ******I am interested information about the family of my grandmother, Ellen Moore, born 28 Nov 1882 in Kentucky, died 18 Nov 1936 in Roland, Pulaski Co., Arkansas. Ellen Moore married Henry Clayton Whitt on 20 Jun 1903 in Lawrence Co., Kentucky. Her sister Mary Belle Moore, born 1872 in Ky, married Henry's brother David Daniel Whitt on 15 Feb 1900. Ellen and Mary Belle's father might have been named Sam Moore. Their mother's name is unknown to me, but I have a photo of Mr. and Mrs. Moore, taken in the late 1800's, probably. I am more than willing to share my meager information on my Moore's and would be more than grateful for any information anyone can give me. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Marvel 33@aol.com *****Currently looking for info on Rebecca ? She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She marred to John "William" B. Morris ( b. ? - d. ? ) of Dundee, Scotland. John was in Union Civil War. Mary's father was in Confederate Civil War. I was told that Mary's father was a confederate officer but never heard what his name was. They married and lived in Little Rock, Arkansas. They had daughter, Margaret Morris who was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on 10 Jan 1877. I do not know if John and Mary had more children. Margaret married to Charles Frame. Margaret moved and resided in North Augusta, Ontario, Canada. Margaret and Charles had six children. They divorced. Margaret died in Buffalo, NY on 10 Dec 1944. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GINA (ginaandtom@aol.com) *****My great grandfather was William Moore. He married my great grandmother (Virginia Isaacs) in 1923-24, they had one son named Richard Harshall Moore (my grandfather), born in Derry, PA. William Moore was "asked to leave" my great grandmother's farm by her mother. He has not been heard from since. I believe he was born in the 1890's, probably in VA or PA. If you can help me with trying to connect this branch of my family tree, I would really appreciate it! I would like to know anything about William Moore- his parents names, etc! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PETER (Bervi@aol.com) *****The Ramsey/Moore line of Franklin County, VA: John Peter Moore (4 Oct. 1859-14 Aug 1912) md. Tradition says he was a "spell-caster" (!) and m. a Polly Sigmon. Amen. Glad to get to know you all. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DIANNA MATHIS (VaBrwnBear@aol.com) *****I was born in Arlington,Va. I've lived a pretty quiet life and stayed mostly in one area Northern Virginia, except for two years, I was with my first husband in Panama, which is where my son was born. I am a homemaker. My son is 10 years old. I have worked as a Data Coder/Analyst and sales clerk as well as a Kitter for IBM. I am related to the Moore Clan through my GreatGrandFather, Paris T. Moore. He was born in Delaware July 2, 1876. He married Martha Jane Hammond of Sessex Co., Delaware, and had 2 children: Mary Eliza Moore and Lyna Moore. No one in my family seems to know anything about his parents and background. My mother's mother (my grandma) was Mary Eliza Moore (b.March 9, 1909). She married Harold D. Potter. They had 7 children. Mildred, Herbert, Dorothy, Arline, Virgina, Dolly, Jerry. My Grandmother died before my interest in genealogy, so I was unable to ask her any questions about her back ground . Any help would be greatly appreciated. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - KEVIN RANKIN (rankin@texas.net) **** Hi, Kevin and Brenda Rankin here. We live in San Antonio, Texas. Kevin is descended from James Calvin Moor. His father was Ward B Minear who was born in Bloomfield Davis Co, Iowa 21, July 1884. Ward left Iowa when quite young and was in Colorado for a short time before moving to Montana where on 27 Feb 1911, he married Carrie Blanche Steele. Ward's father was Jasper Minear b 14 Jan 1852, on 7 Nov 1875, he married Sarah Melissa Moore. Sarah Melissa's father was Fredrick Garrett Moore b 19 Feb 1824, possible in Nashville, TN. Fredrick m. 30 June 1853 Margaret Adeline Jones in David Co Iowa at the home of her parent Robert C and Martha Gash Jones. Fredrick and Adeline had 7 children, Sarah Melissa, Fredrick, Adaline, Dennis, John, Martha, Isabelle. Fredrick and Adaline were twins. Fredrick Garrett Moore was a Pvt in Co A 4th Reg't Iowa Infantry, he mustered in 5 Oct 1864 at Burlington Iowa for a 1 year period at the age of 40. He was 5'9" tall had grey eyes, black hair and dark complexion, his occupation was a farmer. In Dec 1864 he was on daily guard duty in Savannah, GA. His Muster-out Roll dated 24 July 1865 Louisville, KY. Family stories have that by the time Fredrick walked home to Davis Co, his shoes were worn out. He died 10 May 1875 and is buried in the Runkle Cemetery in Davis Co. Jabez G Moore was the father of Fredrick Garrett, he was born in Lee County, VA in 1801 (Taylor Co Iowa History Book has his first name as Jacob Gilbert)and died in Gravity IA in 1878. 1830 McMinn Tenn census lists: Jabez G Moore - 2 under 5 years, 1 5-10 years,1 20-30 yrs, female 1 under 5 yrs, 1 between 20-30. In 1850 he was in Fox twp Davis Co IA Federal census: Jabez G Moore 49 farmer b TN; Alatha 44 b TN; Frederic G 26 b TN; Thomas M 18 M Tn; Edward W 15 b TN; Delila A 13 b TN; Jabez G 11 b VA; Robert B. 9 b VA; Daniel O 6 b VA; James M 3 b.VA.; also listed was a William Sprinkle a 17 birth place unk. Jabez Moore's wife was Alatha Jane Baker born in Lee Co VA in 1805 died in Gravity IA 1875. They came to Davis Co IA in 1850,(Iowa 1850 census) in 1856 they moved to Taylor County by ox team and settled on land that joined Gravity on the south and west. They were the parent of 10 children. (Note- It took us 3 years of searching to find Jabez and Alatha in Taylor Co, if fact the mystery was just solved last June 1996 on our last trip to Iowa, when we met a new cousin, Kathryn Higgins, who is also into genealogy). Jabez's father was William Moore from Moore Co, VA which had been named for the Moore family. William's wife was Priscilla Price. Her father was possibly Lovel Baker. Historically, the Moores were well known in the Colonies. The following information was given to us by Catherine Moore Higgins, who received it from Robert Bromley of CA. I have not been able to locate Mr Bromley, as he is not at the last address Catherine had from 4 years ago. The Moores and Bakers in 1780 they were already close friends. Isaac Baker became a minister after the Revolution and went westward as a missionary to the Cherokees. He was not one of "The Land Legalizers". Instead he tried to help the Indians keep their lands. Have more information and will be glad to exchange information. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOM MOORE :(Tmoore12@AOL.com) Jessie M. Moore, married Esther Pierce 1832 in Hambden, Ohio (Geauga Co.) I live in Navarre, Ohio, just south-west of Canton. I am married and have two children, a son, 11 years old and a daughter, 9 1/2. I've worked at a professional color lab since 1978. I've always had an interest in history, albeit ancient history, and had dreams of being an archaeologist when I grew up. Apparently I have not grown up yet! My grandmother has always said that "you have to know where you come from" and I have been tied up in her Hackathorn and Wyckoff lines for the better part of my life. My personal passion, however, is the Moore side of our family. My Moore line is as follows: My mother: Darlene Lois Moore Schrader b. 11-Feb-1942 East Rochester,OH My grandparents: Elsie Marcella Hackathorn m. David Moore b. 7-Apr-1903 in Jefferson Co. OH near Salineville. Gr-grandparents: Nancy Jane Hale m. William Grant Moore b. 1-Apr-1864 probably in Jefferson Co. OH. d. 18-Feb-1963. My dilemma is in finding out who the parents of William Grant are. My granny (89 yrs.old) says that William had the best horses and buggies around the Bergholz area and that the undertaker used to come and borrow them when he needed them. She's fairly sure that William's mother was named Ruth and that she was of Native American descent. I have not been able to find any Ruth's married to Moores in the area...yet! William had the following known siblings: Mary, who married a Wallace; Sadie, who married a Duke; Charles, whom they called "Tally"; Thomas; and James and Lucy, who married a Leggett, were twins. William was the youngest of the family, born after his father returned from the Civil War. It turns out that there were a lot of Moores in the area that fought in the Civil War, so it has been a chore trying to track each of them down. I have been centering my research around the family of Mordecai Moore who was born in Fayette Co. PA in 1781 and his brother Cyrus born abt 1783 in NJ who were early settlers in the area of Jefferson Co. OH. First settling in the East Liverpool and Lisbon areas, and then settling in the Brush Creek Twp. and Ross Twp. areas of Jefferson Co. I'm following a hunch that one of their sons was the father of William, but have not identified all of their children yet. It could be that this is the wrong family, but I am enjoying the rich history of the time and area. I am naive enough to believe that once I can identify William's parentage that the rest of the puzzle will fall together more easily considering the wealth of information that this Moore group has pulled together. :) I am open to sharing and corresponding with other members. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - VHowery@aol.com *****My ifo is as follows: Robert Moore came to Osage Co. Mo. in the 1820s. He was born NC in 1797 and married Lydia Ann Powers (born May 13, 1804 Maine or Mass). They had 13 children ( I do have names). My line was son James, born Sept 25,1833, and married to Evaline Louisa Phillips, born April 15, 1832. They 8 kids, 2 of whom I will include: Austin Willian my greatgrandfather. His sister Elisa C. Moore who married David Mantle and became Mickey Mantle's grandparents. Any or all info would be greatly appreciated. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MARK CRAGLE (cragle@juno.com) *****I don't have much on this couple. Samuel Moore married Rachel Cragle, born 6-25-1829, and died 6-9-1895 in Luzerne County, Pa. I have done a lot of work on the Cragle line but have nothing on this couple. Any help will be appreciated. ============================================================================== =============== Back issues of MOORE NEWS available at: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/news ============================================================================== =============== MOORE NEWS: Compiled from email and other sources Distributed by Joyce Browning cJBrown7169@AOL.com 19 March 1997 - New Members
