MOORE NEWS Volume II April 6, 1997 Issue 16 New Members NEW MEMBER INTRODUCTIONS J.C.JOHNSON (Lt28ret@aol.com) *****I am a retired police lieutenant from Prince William Co. Va.(32 years)and my wife works for the federal govt. We have three children; Stephanie who lives in NC with her husband and two beautiful daughters Jessica and Samantha; Patricia who lives in Manassas Va. with our 3 year old grandson, Robbie; and Michael who graduated from Ohio State in 1995 and is currently working on his masters degree at OSU. We have been researching for several years three groups of MOORES involving her family and a "limb" off my family tree without luck. #1- John MOORE b.late 1600's-1720 d. 1750-53 m. Mary Thrower. They lived in Brunswick Co.Va. @ 1720-40. They had one daughter I know of (a) Winifred (Winnie) who m. Nathaniel Johnson (son of Rev. War veteran Arthur Johnson) and two sons (b) Drury &(c) John. #2- Joseph MOORE b. @ 1825-40 m. unknown. They had at least one son, John Henry Moore b. 1863, Patoka, Gibson Co. IN. John m. Lucy Williams, dau. of James M. Williams & Mary S. Harmon. Mary Harmon I believe goes back to the Johnson/Moore connection in late 1600's -1700 in Brunswick Co.,Va. #3- James Marion Moore b. 1830-60 (maybe Ky) had sons(a) Skyler Colfax Moore b. ca1880 and (b) Robert Moore b. @1880. James Marian had a brother named Jerome Moore who had a son named Marian Moore who was a priest and went to the northwest part of US in late 1800's and never heard from again. NOTE: There is a James Marian Moore floating thru the Moore system from Ark. but I don't believe it is the same as the ages don't match up. PS: this line connects to my 89 year old cousin who wants to find this info out before she goes to the MOORE HAPPY HUNTING GROUND IN THE SKY. Any help would be accepted greatly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MARY REED (Marylreed@aol.com) *****I am searching for the parents of Asa Moore, b 1872 VA, d Jan 31, 1862 Port Caddis TX. m Rebecca(?). He lived in Lawrence and Giles Counties TN, then migrated to Webster Co MO with his family, except for one son, William Moore stayed in TN for a good while, then migrated to AL. Wm's daughter, Elvira Caroline b 1827 m John Kirk Byrd. They had about 15 children (I have names, dates etc.). Asa had a brother Jeptha who went to TX, also had a son Jeptha went to MO. Asa's and Rebecca's children were : Elijah, Lucinda, Matilda, Jonathon, Thomas, Mary L, John H, David K, and of course William and Jeptha. Asa is an elusive person, he was in court and ordered to pay child support for an illigitimate child, I hope prior to his marriage to Rebecca ? Would also like to find her surname and parents. William Moore and John Kirk Byrd must have been very good friends, they bought land together in AL, William leaving his, in his will, to Elvira Caroline Moore Byrd. Any help would be appreciated. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ROSE VOSLER (PokeAdell) *****I live now in Virginia Beach VA although I was born and raised in Luzern Co PA. I have been reading MOORE NEWS for some time, however they seem to be mostly Moores of the Southern US. I am researching the Moore family of Hunterdon Co., NJ. This is my husband's line. My husband, Edward, and I were both born in PA. We are retired now here in Va. We came here with USAir [now USAirways]. We will soon have our 46th anniversary. We have 4 children, Kirk with USAirways at Logan Airport in MA. He and his wife live in NH. Craig, divorced, living at home, self employed as an artist and Master Picture Framer. Lisa, a pharmacist at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth, lives with her husband, son Joel, 6, and daughter, Darian 8 mo. Another son works at Philadelphia Airport, USAirways, for now commuting back to Va. Bch, where he lives with his wife, Lene and sons, Nathan, 5 and Ian 3. We know very little about my husband's g grandmother, Susannah Moore Vosseller, but if anyone is working on Hunterdon Co. NJ Moores, I would sure appreciate hearing from you. my information is: Susannah Moore b 11 Nov.,1805, NJ m 21 Mar, 1829, at the home of her parents - unknown. She married [?} George F Vosseller. In 1849 they removed to Fairmount Twp., Luzern Co., PA. Susannah died there, 25 April,1859. George and Susannah Vosseller had 8 children, all born in NJ: Mary Ann 7 Sept,1849 -30 Sept, 1890, PA. m 29 Mar. NJ, Enoch Lanning. They removed from NJ to PA in 1854. Sarah , 2 Dec.,1830 NJ- ? was in Durand Pierce Co., WI in 1880. May have married in PA, ? Kendrick. William- 1 Oct., 1831-? m in PA Matilda ? in Naples, Buffalo Co WI in 1870. The first record on George and Susannah MOORE, was a filing at FHL. On same filing were the following Moores: Soloman MOORE m 1802 Ruth Brown and Theodosia MOORE m in 1835 Malhon Smith. I do not know if this meant there was a family relationship there or not. Could they be Susannah's parents and sister ??? I do know that Soloman MOORE was from Hunterdon Co. NJ and the son of Daniel MOORE,1729-1807 and 2nd wife, Elizabeth Rouzer and gs of Jacob [1690 Germany-1755 Hunterdon Co., NJ] and Palonia Murellin Moore. I also know Susannah Moore Vosseller had a brother John Moore who lived as an adult in Ausbury NJ. Any help would be greatly appreciated. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MIKE GOTWALT (H0CKEYNUT) *****My Moore lineage is as follows: GGrandfather - William (q) Moore born 1/9/1850 Sharpsburg,md married Savilla Brashears, b 1/2/1855 Sharpsburg,Md William was son of Daniel Moore and Mary Moore. He had at least one brother, named Frank who was born around 1844. 1860 census indicates that Mary and Daniel were born in the 1820's. I believe Mary is buried in Sharpsburg. Daniel and William operated canal boats on the C & O canal. William was born without a middle initial, but was given (q) later in life by Steel Company in order to identify him from other employees named William Moore. The (q) middle initial appears on his death certificate, but not birth certificate. William (q) Moore's son, William Milton Moore married Annie E. Hoke in Harrisburg PA in the early 1900's. My mother, Betty Moore is their daughter. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MONA GRESHAM (mona1@stic.net) *****Hello Moores! My name is Mona Gresham. My Moore line is on my Mother's side of the family. Johnny Moore was in the Service, Army or Air Force, e's still around somewhere, we think here in TX. As you can see, I don't have very much, but I'm sure looking! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PAM PHILLIPS (73717.2542@CompuServe.COM) *****My earliest Moore ancestor is Asa Moore, b. prob. 1815 in NC (acc. to census and family tradition). Asa Moore was in Nacogdoches, TX by ca 1842. In 1845 he m. Elizabeth B. White, ca 1826-1828 in Perry Co, TN, dau of Joel and Sarah White. Asa and Elizabeth had 11 children in Nacogdoches: Ann Eliza, Rosanna, Angelina, Mosuria, James Jones, John, Martha Elizabeth, Thomas Jefferson, Sterling Price, Richard, Mary S. and raised another child named Clem Benton White Moore, ca 1841-1842 in TN. Clem's ancestry is unknown. Asa was not his father. Elizabeth may or may not have been his mother. Elizabeth died in 1866 in childbirth. Asa Moore died in 1890. He had a brother Andrew J. Moore b. ca 1812 in NC. Married Martha (Patsy) Stegall, dau of William Thomas and Elizabeth Vann Stegall. Their children were: John Alex, Mary Jane and Sara Anne (twins), Eliza Emeline, James Thomas, and Elizabeth Lucy in NC. Was in Pontotoc, MS by ca 1850. Had Margaret, Martha, William David and Henrietta Catherine there. Asa Moore and Andrew Moore had a falling out with their family of origin in NC and no researcher on neither side has ever been able to locate their parents. We think, though, that they came from the Anson/Mecklenburg/Union/Cabarrus Co area of NC. Both wives were from this area. Because of my lack of success in finding Asa Moore's parents, about 5 years ago I started a Moore Database which now contains around 4500 names. They are a mishmash of families from NC and VA, from GA and TN, from AL and MS, and from TX, mostly East Texas. I also collect Asa MOOREs from *wherever*. I have become interested in tracing each of the Moores who came to Nacogdoches County (there were 7 in the 1850 census, but there were others who came through earlier). I have identified 3 of the seven as brothers from the William Harvie and Mary Garland Marks Moore family. Through Mary, they descend from the Meriwether family. I am also interested in the large Matthew Moore family from STOKES County, NC -- a number of descendants from that family came to East Texas. I believe that the William Harvie Moore family and the Matthew Moore family connect but I have found a lot of discrepancy in the early generations. I am also interested in the James Moore family from the Edgecombe Co, NC area. He married Ann Thompson. I believe his parents were Joseph Moore and Ann Hodges. There is a family of Asa Moore and Persis Knight up in New England with some of the same names as this family, so I cannot help wondering if my Asa Moore may be somehow connected. Because of my database, my interest in Moores has escalated way beyond Asa and Andrew, although I am still *obsessed* with finding their family of origin. You cannot imagine how badly I want to be able to connect with descendants of their original family, and be able to know that the breach is overcome at last, in my generation. I want to be able to contribute whatever I might have that would help sort out these families, and be able to add to and complete the information I have on them, and perhaps figure out a way that we can do all that and not have a lot of duplication of effort. I have thought and been told I should -- publish my material on the Moores -- but I want to do so only so it will be available, not for profit, and I haven't really done anything at this point toward that goal, except to add more Moore info to my database as time permits. I am WAY BEHIND at this point. My database is in The Master Genealogist, which is a wonderful program for citing sources and material that doesn't fit into neat categories. It will import and export GEDCOM. Thank you very much. I hope to hear from you soon, and to receive the MOORE NEWS. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - GERRE BYRD (GGENGARD@worldnet.att.net) *****Thanks, Joyce. I'm looking forward to being a part of your organization, hoping I can help others and perhaps moving my Moore family back to the immigrant, which is always my goal with every line. For the past 20 plus years I have been searching family. Thanks to the computer, a "cousin" sent me a document that enabled me to move back two more generations. I descend from: John Parker Moore - b: abt 1765 - maybe Halifax Co., NC - m: abt 1792 to Millie Redman/Redmon/Redmand/Redmond, in Buncombe Co., NC. They had at least eight children: Tavenor B. m: Katherine Murphy/Murphrey ; Mary m: Solomon Carroll; Sarah m: Wm. Peek, Abner S. m: Annie Cook; Rachel m: Jesse Kirby; Abraham m: Lydia Stuart; Isaac C. m: Rachel Bryson; Jacob m: ? John Parker Moore died abt 1856 and is buried in Franklin, Macon Co., NC. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - KIM (Amagk) *****I am related to a Martha Susan Moore Born May 27, 1841 and Died February 19, 1930. Martha was married to John Mahlon Marlin on May 27, 1962. Martha's parents were Henry Bacon Moore and Susan Adams Barnard, but I have no other information. I assume they were from the New England area, most likely Connecticut as that is where the next generation was born. They had 4 children - Mahlon Henry Marlin Born 7-23-1864, Burton Lewis Marlin born 5-14-1867, Jennette Bradford Marlin born 3-18-1871 and John Howard Marlin born 3-21-1876 ( my great-grandfather.) I would like to try and find out more information on Henry Bacon Moore. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JUDITH R. REEDER (74133.2703@CompuServe.COM) I am looking for information on Cordelia M. Moore born about 1820 in Shoreham, VT. I think her parents were Maria Walker and Samuel Moore. I am trying to research Cordelia's husband, John S. Ward who I believe was also born in 1820 in Shoreham. All I have on John's parents is the information from his death certificate which names Daniel and Lucinda Ward. If anyone can add to this information I would be very grateful. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JOAN DOUTHIT ( jdouthit@juno.com) *****My MOORE family is traced to John MOORE b:abt.1761, will probated Nov. 1829 Rockingham Co, NC: m: Mary "Polly" HENRY d: 1842 Children: Henry,Thomas, James, John, Nancy, Peter, Isaac, Nathan, Levin, Rebecca, Mary. My descent is from Henry, Henderson D., Madison Elliot G., to Mary Martha, my grandmother. Henderson MOORE was on of the founders of Greenbrier, AR & prominent in Faulkner Co. AR history. I have a good deal of info on this line & would be happy to share with others at any time. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MMihalcik@aol.com *****This is what I have to contribute, after gleaning bits and pieces from various sources and trying to put it all together: Joseph Moore served 3 years in Mass. St. Continental from March 18, 1781 to Dec. 17, 1783. Born about 1764 at Southwich, Hampshire County, Mass. Married Hannah Miller, b. Nov. 23, 1766, daughter of Joseph and Lydia Stow Millar. Hannah Miller and Joseph Moore married October 28, 1784. Joseph and Hannah came to Avon, Lorain County, Ohio in 1822. Joseph Moore from Middletown Connecticut about 1817. With their eleven children they began their pioneer life in Avon. Children: Theron, Hannah, Norman, Joseph, Abigail, Sophia, Seth, Levi, Messina, Nathaniel and ? Joseph Moore died Feb. 19, 1846 in his 82nd year. He is buried in Avon on the Lake Cemetery, Avon Lake, Ohio. 1.Theron b. 9/3/1786 2. Hannah b. 7/22/1788 m. Sheldon Comfort and moved to Wisconsin 3. Norman b. 1790 4. Jospeh b. 1792 m. Hannah 5. Abigail b. 1795 6. Sophia b. 1797 m. John Burlingame 7. Seth b. 1799 m. Sophia Bishop 8. Levi b. 1807 m. Deborah Moore 9. Messina 10. Nathaniel m. Anna Evans 11. ? Theron Moore came to Lorain County about 1816, locating in what is now Avon township. Afterwards he moved to Wisconsin where he died. His son, Theron, was born October 8, 1810 in Plattsburgh NY and came with his parents to Lorain Co. where he was educated. He married in Avon township Delia Ann Case, born October 12, 1816, a native of Ohio; she died on July 3, 1880. They were married on March 18, 1833, and after their marriage they made their home in what is called Lake Breeze in Sheffield Twp. He was by occupation a sailor and ship builder, but later farmed. He died November 28, 1877 aboard a vessel at Detroit. His wife survived him until 1880 being called to her long home while living in Trumbull Co. Ohio. They had eleven children, 4 sons, 7 daughters: 1. Menzies died in Kansas 2. Leonard W. b. 1836 m. Amanda Miller 3. Elmina m. Thomas Gawn 4. Amelia b. 1842 m. John Faragher 5. Melvina d. young 6. Truman b. 1844 m. Esther Carron 7. Charlotte b. 1846 m. Bert Briggs of NY 8. Maria b. 1849 m. Mair Pointon 9. Bert died young 10. Rowena b. 1853 m. Theron Merry of Kansas 11. Mary b. 1858 m. W. A. Jewett of Cleveland Maria Moore and Mair Pointon were the parents of two children, Maud and Theron. Maud Moore Pointon married Frank Silas Wing and they had four children, Paul Pointon Wing, Rowena Maria Wing, Mair Rollen Wing and Maude Frances Wing. Paul Pointon Wing married Avis Lulu Kimber and they had two sons, Donald Kimber Wing and Eugene Mair Wing. Eugene Mair Wing married Frances Vera Zimmerman and they had two daughters, Barbara Avis Wing and Judith Ann Wing. I am Barbara. I have a scrapbook compiled by Maude Moore Pointon Wing which has a very faded picture of "Grandfather Moore's barns." These must be located in Lorain County OH, if they are still in existence. I also have a letter, written in 1865 by Delia Case Moore to her daughter, Maria. I don't know how Maria Moore met Mair Pointon, but they moved quite a bit; they lived in Yellow Medicine-Minnesota, Canby-Minnesota, Bedford-Virginia and ended up in Alhambra, California. Maria Moore was from Lorain County, Ohio; Mair Pointon was from Baraboo, Wisconsin. He was born in England and came to Baraboo with his parents. He fought in the Civil War, enlisting at 18 years of age. I am wondering if there is any more information available on this family; possibly Joseph's parents and perhaps related families such as the Case and/or Miller families. There doesn't seem to be much information regarding the Theron born 9/3/1786, son of Joseph. No wife's name is mentioned. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - REB DNA@aol.com *****My "oldest" Moore ancestor that I can trace is an Austin Moore b. about 1838 in Indiana (according to census records). In 1860, he was in Osceola, St. Clair County, Missouri with his wife Naomi Van Trump and their infant son William Franklin Moore (b. 11 Sep 1859 d. 19 Sep 1912). I am unable to find this Austin Moore in any 1850 census index for Missouri, Iowa (info indicates Naomi lived in Keokuk for a time), Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. This may be the same Austin Moore who died in the Confederate Army hospital in Little Rock in Feb. 1863, as his son (only known child) was raised by another family and other family stories support this; but one must be weary of legends. William Franklin Moore married Lucinda Catherine Donahoe. Wm. "Frank" is buried in Pilot Grove, Missouri. They had at least four children, two daughters that I'll mention. Gertrude (b. 28 May 1885 d. 19 Jan 1927) married Walter Davis of Pilot Grove, Cooper County, Mo. They would be my great-grandparents. Gertrude died when my grandmother was two, and Gertrude's mother and sister(Fannie) raised my grandmother. I heard many stories of "Grandma Moore" and Aunt Fannie from my grandmother. I do not believe that Fannie ever married and that she was a school teacher in Boonville, MO. I have been researching my genealogy for about 18 months, and would like to have the Moore line as far back as some other branches. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - CpnTrader@aol.com ******I am searching for my grandfather Robert E. Moore born 1927 in Columbus Ohio, Franklin County. He was a Chief Petty Officer in the NAVY ( so family says). He married a woman named Rose I. Thiebalt or Thibault(spelling unknown). They had 2 boys and 1 girl..Robert Emile Moore born in 1949, Francis Moore and Joyce Moore The baptismal paper of my father, Robert Emile Moore says he was baptized on November 13 , 1949 by Rev. Jeremiah T. Cullinane. .Sponsors were: Emil Robinson and Celia Robinson. He was baptized in Blessed Sacrament of Cambridge Massachucetts, so I have come to believe that Robert was in Mass. at this time in 1949. My grandmother(Rose Thiebalt) has since passed on and so has my father (Robert Emile Moore) So it is hard to get any information.. On a copy of My fathers birth, it says parents resided at 337 Putnam Ave. Cambridge Massachucetts.. (Note: My Dad's birth certificate says his father was 22 at time of birth in 1949 . His mother was 17 in 1949... __________________________________________________________________ Back issues of MOORE NEWS available at: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/news __________________________________________________________________ MOORE NEWS: Compiled from email and other sources Distributed by Joyce Browning cJBrown7169@AOL.com 6 April 1997
