MOORE NEWS Volume II April 9, 1997 Issue 17 New Members 1 SALUTATIONS Last week's New Member issue carried a message from PAM PHILLIPS (73717.2542 @CompuServe.COM). Apparently there is a problem with the address and it is the only one I have for Pam. I'd appreciate it if one of you CompuServe users would try to locate Pam's correct address and send to me. On a technical basis, all addresses used in MOORE NEWS are copied from the transmission to me so that I don't risk typing it incorrectly. However, if my finger slips during formatting, a new character may appear (unknown to me). The other mistake I sometimes make occurs with AOL subscribers to whose address I have to add < @aol.com > I will sometimes, instead, use '2' instead of '@.' There have been several address errors recently, for which I apologize. It's a heads-up signal for me to be more careful. NEW MEMBERS BRIAN WACISA (Wacisa@aol.com). Brian's family information was run several weeks ago with an incorrect email address. Here it is again. My apologies for the error. *****I live in a little town call Kissee Mills, Missouri. I have found a possible link for Sarah A. Brookerson, but am waiting for some papers to prove the link to H. Brookerson in Taylor Co. TX in 1880. I have found several A. A. Don't know where to start since I have no one to tell me anymore than what I have gathered so far. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - BOB ARMSTRONG (bob-nita@neosoft.com). *****My wife, the former Juanita Muriel Moore, is my reason for being interested in the Moore NEWS, and, in truth, my only reason for living. We have been married for 41 years and only now am I finding out that she is related to James Butler (Wild Bill) Hickok, Ethan Allen, and Vice Pres. Daniel D. Tompkins. What a surprise. Nita is the daughter of Robert Carter Moore of Ft. Lupton, Colorado. Robert was the son of Daniel Carter Moore of Fairfield, Iowa. Daniel's father, the Rev. Daniel D. Moore married Eunice Mary Hickok in 1855, and she brought with her the genes of the long Hickok line as well as a substantial line of Langdons and Hurlburts. Nita's mother, Muriel Lawrencia (Grasser) Moore, is the daughter of Eugenia Blair Tompkins, who's father was Frank Tompkins, the first high sheriff of Lincoln County, Colorado. That line goes back to the murky beginnings of most of the Tompkins of the world, including (if you believe some mythological accounts) Thom the Saxon. The Moores continue. Rev. Daniel D. Moore'S father was Samuel Moore, of Breckenridge County, Kentucky, purportedly the fourth of 9 boys born to John Moore and his wife Elizabeth (?) of North Carolina. I have the names of most of the siblings of Robert and both Daniels for those who are interested. I, of course, would like to see where John and his wife, Elizabeth, lead me. I know very little about John Moore. Elizabeth Moore outlived her husband by several years. They met in Kentucky. After John died she remarried to a man named Thomas Davis. She also outlived him. She lived to be 102 years old. I suspect that she and John were nearer in age when they married, so I assume he was born in the 1770s or 1780s. We have calculated her birth year as 1781. She was from North Carolina and she died at New London, Iowa. About her 9 sons, I only know that Samuel was born in Breckenridge County, Kentucky in 1810. Sam met Nancy Hoskins in Morgan County, Illinois, but she was also from Kentucky, Woodford County. They removed to Iowa, and I believe their children were all born in Fairfield or Cedar Township, Jefferson County, Iowa. After Sam, I have a lot of information about his children and grandchildren. Not everything, but a lot. And more is hopefully on the way. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DON MOORE (DONM8@aol.com) *****I am seeking the parents/siblings of Joseph Edmond Lee MOORE b. I have gone through all the past issues and have two possible shakey links. I live in Watsonville CA on the Monterey Bay. I direct job training programs for our county's high schools. I've been at this education business for about thirty years and am looking forward to the time I can answer my own bells (so to speak) rather than someone else's. I have been doing family research for about ten years and like many others put off the Moore needle in the hay stack search. I start with another James Moore to add to the collection. James F. Moore (some say middle name is Field) was born in NC 21 Mar 1789; died 21 Aug 1865 Monroe Co MS. He lived at or near Aberdeen MS. This area "changed hands" several times and can be reported at Lowndes, Monroe, or Clay Co MS. James was knows as Maj James Moore of TN. His will was written in 1860 which names his children. James married 1) Abigail Woods 1793 KY - 1843) 23 Sep 1813 Franklin Co TN, 2) Bidda T by 1850 and 3) Catherine Bennett in Monroe Co MS. I believe all the children are of marriage with Abigail Woods who was the daughter of Peter Woods and Jael Kavanaugh (Note: I have a lot on this Woods-Wallace-Campbell-Kavanaugh family). 12 Children of James & Abigail: Martha Ann b 1814 AL married Robert Price; Thomas Collins b. 1815 TN or AL married Martha West Hollis. Moved to TX; Lucinda Abigail b 1815 TN married Dr. Erasmus S Broyles in Monroe Co MS. May be twin of Thomas C.; Archibald Woods b 1818 married Anna Hubbard, then Anna Woods Miller, then Mary Collins Miller. He died 1887 Bastrop Co TX; Mary F b 1820 married Charles Wesley Price; John Woods b 1823 AL married Sallie L. He died 1877 Monroe Co MS. Was a Dr.; Jael Angeline died young; Sarah Adaline b. 1827 AL married William Edmonson Trotter 1842. She died 1905 visiting in AZ (my line); William Hudson b 1829 AL married Martha AE Brooks. Died 1862 Battle Corinth; James Kavanaugh b 1832 AL married Mary Eliza Rainey. Died Fayette Co TX (?). Was a Methodist minister; Littleton Wilde b. 1835 AL married Anna E Wright. Died 1911 La Grange, Fayette Co TX. He was lawyer & Judge.; and Henry Clay b 1837 AL. Died 1861 VA. According to Woods family history, James & Abigail moved to Franklin Co AL soon after their marriage, then further south to what is now Sulligent AL, then to Moscow beat where James was postmaster. 1820 & 1824 in Marion Co AL (Moscow beat) where James elected to AL Senate & House of Reps (see Garrett's Public Men in AL). I don't know who James' parents or siblings were. Any ideas? Pat Johns - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - BARBARA EKISS (jbekiss@worldnet.att.net) *****Three years ago we started actively planning for retirement by putting our house near San Jose CA on the market to sell. 24 hours later we felt homeless as it sold even before the new paint was dry, and before the masking tape came off the door handles. For two years we (the dog, 3 cats, John and I) lived in a 700 sq ft furnished apartment while we decided what to do. Jan 5, 1997 we moved into our new home in Scottsdale. But, for more than two years I had nothing much to do but genealogy research - a wonderful opportunity. Mother of 3 grown sons, all of whom were born in Mongomery Co PA just miles down the road from where the immigrant Ekiss(Ickes) settler resided. We have 2 wonderful daughter in laws and 5 grandchildren including a set of twins whose birth 11 months ago helped to keep Grandma in CA and extra year after our house was completed. I am just beginning my research into the Moore family of Washington Co. TN and hope to learn more from all the Moore researchers out there. A brief scan of past issues of this newsletter shows me that you all are active researchers who document your findings. Hooray. Here is what I know so far. Daniel Moore will probated May 12, 1820 WA Co. TN names wife Rebecca (b. NC per census), sons Stephen and James and dau. Basheba. Stepehn's will, 1862 names his bro. Moses, executor so I assume Moses Moore was also a son of Daniel. Deed research 1870 finds Martha Moore and Sally (Sarah Bell) selling to Moses Moore, "2 small lots of land allotted to the said Isaac Moore dec'd out of the real estate of Daniel Moore deceased". "Said lot known as number 4 in the partition of the said Daniel Moore lands" . Daniel Moore is the attorney used in these transactions. This statement makes it appear that Isaac is also a son of Daniel. Sarah Moore m. Andrew Bell in 1824. He died about 1860 and the above deeds find Sarah living in Coles Co IL in 1870. Sarah and Andrew Bell had a dau. Mary who m. William Ballard Ekiss in 1850, they moved to Coles Co. IL about 1855 and my husband descends from this marriage thru their son John Andrew Ekiss. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SHARON (WEEKLEY) PAWLOWSKI (Sharon4673@AOL.com) *****I Live in Cincinnati OH, widowed with five adult children, grandmother of one. He was born in Ohio (probably Belmont County) in October, 1847. He spent most of his life in Vanceburg, KY, and I believe he died there. His parents were John Moore (born March 3, 1822) and Mary Ann (?), born February 6, 1820. John Moore was born in VA and Mary Ann in OH. Alfred had a sister, Emaline, (my great-grandmother) and possibly a sister Oletha. I am VERY interested in tracing the line further back and am hoping that Alfred's descendants will be able to help. My great-grandmother died fairly young, and did not pass on any information about her family. Alfred's children, as far as I can discern from census records are: Millie, Morton, Conner, Morris, Dorsey, and Robert. An old diary of my great-grandfather's also mentions visiting a Richard (Dick) Moore and a Phillip Moore, probably cousins. Alfred and Emaline Moore and their parents were found in the 1850 census in Green Twp., Adams County, OH. I could not find them in 1860. In 1870, they were in Vanceburg, KY, and the whole family, with the exception of my great-grandmother, remained there throughout the available census records. Thanks for any help. __________________________________________________________________ Back issues of MOORE NEWS available at: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/news __________________________________________________________________ MOORE NEWS: Compiled from email and other sources Distributed by Joyce Browning cJBrown7169@AOL.com 9 April 1997
