I have been researching for the last four years since I retired from my work at the Veterans Administration, and have been able to make tremendous progress with all surnames except MOORE. When it comes to finding MOORE ancestors I have run into the proverbial 'brick wall'. The earliest ancestor that I have found is John Moore b. abt 1815 in VA. On Sept. 10, 1835, he m. Mary BARNHOUSE in Randolph Co., WV. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Belmont Co., OH, along with Daniel Helm and his wife, Deborah Barnhouse Helm. Deborah was sister to Mary Barnhouse. Mary Barnhouse was the d/o George Barnhouse and Susannah Pitman who were married in Randolph Co. in 1810. John and Mary Barnhouse Moore had six children: 1) Julia Ann b. abt 1837 m. Mordicah Linchorne Morris May 2, 1887 in Roan Co., WV 2) Jonathan b. March 18, 1838 m. Mary Brannon, d/o Wm. A. and Catherine King Brannon, Dec. 20, 1857 in Calhoun Co., WV. 3) Jahue b. abt 1840 m. Virginia Feagans Jan. 14, 1861 in Calhoun Co., WV. Jahue died in Calhoun Co. in 1862 while a prisoner of war of the Union Army. 4) Emily b. Sept. 1, 1841 m. Daniel Starcher Jan. 27, 1859 in Calhoun Co., WV. 5) Samuel J. b. Sept. 9, 1843 m. Mary Jane Helmick Wiblin Jarvis July 22, 1867 in Callhoun Co. WV. 6) Elizabeth J. b. Jan. 1847 m. Jonas Benjamin Webb July 23, 1867 in Calhoun Co., WV. John and Mary moved to Tyler Co., in 1847 where they purchased 100 acres from John Leeson. They appear on the 1850 Tyler Co. Census with their children. John died before 1854 because Mary Barnhouse Moore m. Wm. A. Brannon in 1854 in Gilmer Co. and she had two more children, Charles and Ervin. Charles died at 10 months. Ervin appeared on the 1860 Gilmer Co. Census but does not appear again. The children lived in the Roane Co. WV area. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOM POWELL (TOM PWYL@aol.com) ***** I'm looking for information about the wife of George G. Moore. He was born Aug 16 1837 and died Dec 29 1864. Avery, Ferguson, Buckler a child of Florence I. Moore who was a child of Loren Clement Moore and Hattie Amelia Ridgeway, who resided in Prince Georges Co. a short distance South of Forestville, MD and about 8 miles north of Marlboro, MD. After high school, I went to work for the Federal Government, had a total of 6 children, took a few college courses but became a single parent, with 4 growing children. Moved first to Yorktown, VA in 1965-66 and then, to Tampa, FL in 1970. Finally, ended up in Avon Park, FL in 1977 and made it home. The older children are scattered in TN and OK and the youngest is in Sebring, FL. I work for a Bombing Range owned by the Air Force, which has a wonderful Natural Resources Management Plan, in tact. It's a large place 106,000 acres and is interesting. I am working on Moore, Thompson, Ridgeway, Allen, and many more surnames with a Aunt (Sister of my Mother), who still lives in Maryland. Enjoy the research and divide my pleasure time between research, gardening and crafts. Would appreciate all and any help, as I have to drive at least 50 miles, to reach a genealogy library. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JACK MOORE (jmoore@llv.com) *****I was born and raised in Erie, PA. Due to job promotions, my wife and I have lived in Pittsburgh PA, Denver CO, Roswell NM, and Los Angeles CA. We retired, after 29 years with a major office equipment manufacturer, to Las Vegas, NV. We have been trying, for about the last 10 years, to trace our ancestors. Unfortunately I was not astute enough to ask questions of the people that had the answers when they were alive. My Mother died when I was one year old, so there was not very much contact with that side of my family. My goal is to attempt to find out when the ancestors came into America. I have had much better luck with my mothers side, tracing a ggg grandfather, named John McCoy, to his birth in MD in 1745. On my father's side, we are, frankly, stuck. As you will note, all of the relatives are from northwestern PA, notably Erie County. My grandfather and grandmother divorced somewhere between 1910 and 1916. His name was Purnile Jack Moore. I located his burial site in Dayton, OH. His death certificate stated that he was born in Erie County and his father's name was Joseph Moore. With that said, this is what I know: 1) Joseph Moore 2a Purnile Jack Moore b 1866 Erie Co. PA; d 6/27/1946 Dayton OH; m Grace Lee b 9/10/1881 Titusville PA; d 1/17/1969 Erie PA 3a Ferne Moore b10/9/1905; d 6/1991 FL 3b Purnile Moore b 2/9/1908 Union City PA; d 2/6/1965 Erie PA; m Grace Conrad b 3/18/1909 Erie PA; d 6/16/1934 Erie PA 3c Karle Moore b 4/3/1910 Sewickley PA; d 1960 Erie PA 2b Samuel Moore My parents are Purnile Moore (3b) Now, with some time on my hands, I am currently researching at the LDS FHC in Las Vegas. If anyone has any ties to my ancestors or can give me direction, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PAULA SLIMP MOORE (PJSMOORE@aol.com) Hi, I'm from Birmingham, AL. I have been into genealogy for about 3 years now. I researched my own family, the Slimps, and progressed rather rapidly; but about a year ago, I started doing my late husband's family, the Moores, and found out how hard it can be when you have such a popular last name to research! My earliest MOORE ancestor is Drury Wilson Moore, but I think that sometimes he just went as Wilson Moore. He was born c.1804 in Hancock Co. GA and was married to Catherine Sorrels in Rutherford Co. NC on Jan. 7, 1822. At that time there was a MARK MOORE also living in Rutherford Co. who I believe may have been Drury's father. Drury & Catherine later moved to Dalton, GA. Children of Drury Wilson Moore: James Moore b. 1826 Nancy Moore b. 1834 Mellipa Moore b. 1836 Elizabeth Moore b. 1839 Thomas Moore b. 1839 Mark Foster Moore b. 4-4-1842 d. 8-16-1919 5th ALA Cav. CSA Rebecca Moore b. 1845 Catherine Moore b. 1847 I would appreciate hearing from anyone with info. Thanks. PJSMoore@aol.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - RUTH HILL (rhill@tcd.net) *****My connection to Moore is as follows: "John Cowdery of Norfolk, Va., m. Jan. 4, 1794, married to Nancy Moore, dau. of Col. James and Ann (Davis) Moore of Edgefield District, S.C. She was of Welsh descent. John d. Dec. 25, 1804. Children of John and Nancy: James Moore, b. Aug. 12, 1795 Henry, b. Feb. 4, 1797; d. July 15, 1799 Savage, b. July 30, 1798; d. Feb. 7, 1799 Harriet, b. Sept. 15, 1800 William Drayton, b. Apr. 1, 1803 Caroline, b. Feb. 4, 1805; d. Oct. 13, 1811" This information is from COWDREY GENEALOGY BY Mary Bryant Alverson Mehling. I have not been able to verify the marriage of Col. James Moore to Ann Davis or that Nancy is the daughter of this marriage. Ann later married a man by the name of Tolivar Bostick and had several children by him. It has also been reported that Nancy was the daughter of THIS marriage. I can go no further in my family search until Nancy's parents are confirmed. So far I have been unable to find Col. James Moore and Ann Davis with a daughter Nancy in any of the Edgefield SC records that I have searched. Most early records do not give the maiden names of the wives. I have copies of Wills and other records of Nancy and my gggrandfather and family history from this marriage down to mine -- this is the Cowdrey line. I would appreciate any information concerning our Nancy that anyone can find!!! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Kasey BR@aol.com *****I am originally from Kokomo, IN and live in Indianapolis. I began seriously researching my family lines in 1985, and now occasionally try to fill in the gaps when I have extra time. I was self-employed for 14 years, which allowed me some flexibility to do genealogy research, but am currently working for a corporation as a designer in their marketing department. I began my interest in my family histories at the encouragement of my maternal grandmother, Cynthia Hobbs Moulder. She told me the stories that had been passed down not just from her families, but from her husband's, too. I became the collector of the family stories, the bibles, the photos and documents as I gathered information from other relatives, libraries, County offices, etc. (and I have the file cabinets and closets to prove it!!!) I have tremendous research started (is it EVER done?) on many of my families, but the Moore line is sketchy. I have gathered information on the Moores of Brown County, OH, but haven't been able to determine the relationships of many of them to one another. I have traveled to Georgetown and Ripley, Brown Co, to gather information, but have had little luck. Maybe some MOORE NEWS rsearchers have some connections! I am a descendant of Diane (later Diana) Moore Simpson, who was born in Brown Co, OH on 10 Mar 1839, the daughter of Sherry Moore (b. about 1809 KY-1889 OH) and Sarah "Sally" Flaugher Moore (m. 27 May 1827 in Brown Co, OH). Sarah Flaugher was the daughter of Henry Flaugher, Sr. (b. 17 Mar 1789 in Franklin Co, PA: d.1864 Brown Co)) and his second wife, Rachel Wallace (1789-1866). Henry Flaugher's parents were Adam Sr. Flaugher (b about 1756 in PA, d. 8 Aug 1825 in Brown Co OH) and Katherine Ann Hidler (b. PA, D c 1790 in PA). Adam was son of Christian Flaugher (b. about 1732, d about 1788 in Waynesboro, PA), who was the son of Jacob Flaugher (b. Switzerland). I have much of the Flaugher and Simpson families info available to those who'd like it. It has been suggested that Sherry (or sometimes, Shary) Moore was "John Sherman Moore" but I have no proof of this. Shary Moore appears in the Thompson "History Collecton of Brown Co, OH" as working for "Downing & Company, Ripley, OH. Sherry and Sarah Flaugher Moore had at least two children: 1. Diane b. 10 Mar 1839 Ripley OH d. 15 May 1915 Indianapolis, IN m. William Harrison Simpson (b. Mar 1837 in Adams Co OH) they met and lived in Danville, Hendricks Co, IN, where Diane's mother ran a boarding house I have Diane & Will's descendants. 2. Amanda b. 24 Jan 1834 Ripley OH d. 26 Feb 1906 Georgetown OH m. (2) Benjamin Franklin Johnson (b. 2 Mar 1819 West Liberty VA) I have Amanda and Ben's descendants. There is an Issac Moore or Brown Co OH who may be a brother to Sherry, as he named a son "Sherry." Issac was b. 2 Jul 1812 KY and d. 24 Oct 1867 Brown Co, OH. He married Ann ---------. Issac had a land grant in Pike Co, KY in 1843, as did an Issac Moore, Jr. Issac and Ann Moore's children were: 1. Elizabeth b. 1831 OH 2. Mary b. 1832 OH 3. Sylvenus b. Aug 1834 OH 4. Rachel b. 1835 OH 5. John b. 1837 OH 6. Deborah b. 1839 OH 7. Sarah b. 1841 OH 8. Sherry b. 1843 OH 9. Ann b. 1845 10. Charles b. 1847 11.
